Folks,

Is there any way I can read RPCA not via Google so that I can avoid
all this bloody MI5 Spam? It was funny at first, but now it is
seriously beginning to piss me off.

Suggestions PLEASE!!!

If you can't filter can you sort my subject so they group together for
easier removal?  I use a newsreader (Xnews) so I don't know what the google
interface offers.  Are you sure your internet provider does not have a news
server?  Then you could use a standard news program.

Fortunately (or not since I'm reading Google) they group together so I
just skip them.  Don't you have Agent?  Someone got him thrown off his
demon account, so now he uses a ton of the free ones.

If it helps at all, he is a self described schizophrenic who stopped
taking medicine because he believed the doctors were out to get him.
I'm not even sure if his wesite is still available, but he used to be
relatively normal, and could be spoken to at times (though not now it
seems).

If you are in Google, and I've misread you, I can tell you how to get
them 'together' so long as no one responds to him.  They are much
easier to skip over that way.

Yes please! The bloke is driving me barmy with his spam! It amused me
at first, but now I'm just annoyed as I'm having to scroll through
pages of crap.

Thanks

On the page where your messages are listed, chose the option (upper
left) of topic list rather than topic summary (that just gives the
subject line).  Hoping it would look like this,

http://groups.google.com/group/rec.pets.cats.anecdotes/topics;

rather than this,
http://groups.google.com/group/rec.pets.cats.anecdotes/topics?gvc=1

Also have the messages listed by latests message rather than first
(you probably already have that).

That set up lets you view subjects, and all the ones for him are
together, unless he's replied to.  It isn't great, but at least it
makes him passable in a less "paging down" way.

If you set up to view the list rather than the summaries, he's easier
to skip over.  Once people write enough in, then he is on the second
page.  The summary has fewer messages shown, so you go through more
pages trying to get around his stuff.

It isn't perfect, but when you are not computer 'comfortable',
installing something like Agent doesn't happen because DH (who I
adore) can't be bothered to set it up for me, so...  Google it is.

You'd have thought so, but as he is merely an annoyance, and
apparently (I merely presume this portion) no threat to himself or
others, there isn't much anyone can do for him.  People cannot be
forced to take their medication, even if they are considered a threat
to others (i.e., the woman who took part in the abduction/rape of
Elizabeth Smart in Utah).

I've read portions of his website, and he was pretty well spoken,
apparently well read, but just seeing things I didn't see.  I feel for
him, he truly believes what he says, but anymore, I just try to 'slip'
over the stuff and not read.

However, I will get into 'threads' about him, like this one, and maybe
I can help.  I know the other way of reading Google is horrible, as
you get the subject and a portion of the post, so when he sends out
many, like today, well, that takes up about two pages.

The person who told me about the website, used to be on relatively
friendly terms with the man, through newsgroups, but that has gone by
the wayside.

Still, Grace Slick is one of my favorite performers.  Just wishing I
could get ahold of one song she did solo (early 80s), as I really
enjoyed it.  And her comment to Merv Griffin was priceless:

Merv:  So, Gracie, how long have you been off drugs.
Grace: <looking at watch> what time is it?

The woman I was living with the last time I saw the Airplane almost
left me in Akron after the concert because of the way she knew I felt
(feel) about Grace Slick. We had an open relationship but she resented
my _worshipping_ someone else. What song was it? I might have it. She
probably _is_ the devil incarnate but I have been mad about her for
forty years. Wow, forty years. I am so old.

I just saw a video of her performing "Wooden Ships" with David Crosby
and Graham Nash. The lack of a great lead guitarist like Jorma or
Stills made it slightly odd but it was vocally interesting. It was
done in the Eighties or Nineties, I would guess.

One is supposed to *worship* ones rock'n'roll gods, did she not know
this?  We worship them because to get too close would burn us (like
Icarus) and throw us to the ground.

You aren't old.  Pfft.  I loved Jim Morrison my self (lol), and Jimi
Hendrix and Janis but we won't get into who I liked in my early teen
years.

The song she did was called Dreams.  So was the album (yes, I said
album, vinyl...  now who's old?).  There is an "enhanced" CD on
Amazon, but I just really want that one song (whine, whine, whine).
I'm getting very close to just buying the thing, and dealing with
fallout later.

I never understood why Marty Balin thought he do the singing that she
used to do.  At least that was always the rumo(u)r I'd heard.  She has
the most distinguishable voice, and even if she did do all those
drugs, she managed not to lose the voice through all that.

Oh, c'mon, please? Tell us!! Can't be any worse than my taste at that
age. :)

In high school, I liked Jimi Hendrix, Aretha Franklin, the Beatles, and...
this is the embarrassing one... <cringe> OK, I'm showing you mine, so you
have to show me yours, LOL... the Fifth Dimension! Please don't laugh me
off the newsgroup! :) (I used to say that they were the only white group
in that list. :) The Beatles had far more soul than they did!)

What's so embarrassing about the Fifth Dimension?  I loved them too.
No, mine is worse.  I like all those guys before I was 10 (lol).  When
I was 12, I discovered ... ahem ...  The Bay City Rollers.  There, I
said it.  NOw they are all old and gross or in jail for pedophilia
(which is just beyond gross, but I digress).

Only their manager got done for paedophilia- and I was quite a Gary
Glitter fan in the 70's so we share a shame there! (And I loved
Genesis who were discovered by Jonathan King)

I was a T.Rex fan at that age (or thereabouts due to my dad banning
all pop music in the house it wasn't until about '72 I got into the
forbidden fruit of pop!) when Elvis died my mum woke me up with the
news and I said "Why bother me with that?" and then she didn't tell me
Marc had died!

I was also into Alice Cooper and still am to this day

Derek Longmuir may not have done time, but he did get busted for child
porn.  He was the drummer.  I can't even remember their manager's name
(Tam something or other), how sad is that?  Genesis, but only post
Peter Gabriel.  I also like Phil Collins, rather alot (lol), he's just
fun.

I've recently started listening to Snow Patrol, a young man named
Shawn Hlookoff, and 3 Doors Down.  Mostly found them from youtube
videos of other things, done to the music by these artists (and
others).

I seem to remember them (him).  He died in a motorbike crash, yeah?  I
liked Elton John, the aforementioned BCR, then went into the Bee Gees
and disco, then went into 80s "hair metal", but beneath it all, I had
the base of Jimi, Janis, The Doors (et al), that I never lost.

Poison by AC is one of my more favorite tunes.  Though I have loved

Okay not bad

He died in a mini car driven by his wife, which hit a tree then again
of that band most of them died in vehicle accidents so you might be
thinking of someone else (He started as a two piece then went into a
four piece and out of five or six musicians I think one is left
standing, I think it's 3 car or bike accidents, one after years of
drug abuse and one choked on death on a cocktail cherry)

There was about a 3 year span that I liked Genesis (post Gabriel and
pre I Can't Dance).  I liked one song by Mike and Mechanics, I liked a
couple of Gabriel solo songs.  Don't really know why I didn't care for
them when he was with 'em, just didn't.  Will have to check out GESM
and see what I've missed (as I have matured a bit, not much I'll grant
you, but a bit).

I just remember a motorbike (not even us 'merkins' would consider a
Mini a motorcycle, lol) accident, and presumed it was Marc.  Then
there was that 'lovely' remake of Bang a Gong by the group in the 80s
(Power Station, I remember now)...

I always liked that song "I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe)" or
something like that. It's really old, early to mid 70s. Definitely
Genesis *with* Peter Gabriel. I'm not all that familiar with the other
songs/albums from that era of Genesis, though. I was never a big prog
rock fan. Don't hate it or anything, it just wasn't my favorite.

I really liked Genesis during the 80s. One song that really stands out
to me is called "Taking It All Too Hard". It's a bit obscure. "That's
All", a much bigger hit, was another song I relaly liked. And ABACAB
is really great, especially the live version. Other good ones: "Turn
It On Again", "Land of Confusion".

I have liked some of Peter Gabriel's solo music, up to the "So" album
(1986).  After that I stopped paying attention to him.

Have you tried looking for the song on music download sites?
I've been downloading music like mad lately. I could check out some

I have, at least the ones I know, it isn't available.  Only the older
stuff or newer stuff.  All the songs called Dreams are not even that
song, that is what is so annoying.  Okay, the youtube vid sucks, but
you can hear the song:

I just really love this song, it hit a string when I was younger, and
that string is still there when I hear it <blush>.

Janis. Sigh. I really didn't get _into_ music until I heard Janis and
the Airplane. I sort of noticed the Beatles and the other "British
Invasion" bands but I kept on listening to jazz and blues.

Oh, the Dead were not among my favorites back in the day. They were
always behind at least Janis and the Airplane and a number of blues
artists and Etta James and Emmylou Harris and I guess the lack of a
female vocalist hurt them with me. The men I liked to listen to were
all blues artists. But my brother's son and daughter were very big
young deadheads and went to concerts and always had their songs
playing when I would visit. And one day I heard AMERICAN BEAUTY all
the way through a couple of times. The influence of my first musical
love, the blues, and of my recent musical love, bluegrass, is all
throught that album. And Robert Hunter's lyrics and all the tunes.
After that, I sought out other Grateful Dead stuff and also found Old
and In the Way, Jerry's bluegrass group. And now I am a latter-day
Deadhead.

My parents were very eclectic in their music choices.  We went from
Classical to Acid Rock.  The only thing they weren't wild about was
the discordnant stuff (St. Ives or someone like that?).  They even got
into punk when it came out.  I was "exposed" to just about every kind
of music made, and it was great.  The sixties and early 70s in
California were a great time to be into music.

I used to have all of Airplane's albums (and 8 tracks), all of Janis'
albums, two Jimi Albums, that were mine.  Mom and dad would buy me
which ever album of theirs I'd fallen in love with, so that I had my
own.  The invasion bands (with the notable exception of The Who) were
just 'radio' music to me.  Strange that I never considered Zeppelin to
be an 'invasion' band, were they?

If you view the link to youtube, it's actually her song, her voice.
The ...  not sure if he's a drag queen (the name suggests that),
anyway, the dancer is mouthing the words, and the background noise is
very annoying, but that's my song, and I love it.  I just start the
video, open another window and do other stuff while it's playing.

I completely agree.  She was just so talented.  Now, she and Marty are
the ones who "retired", and they won't let Kantner use Airplane nor
Starship in the band he plays with these days (which may be why he
considers her the Devil Incarnate).

She had problems, I mean, who wouldn't coming out in the 60s, but I'd
never heard that it affected her work (and it obviously didn't affect
her voice).  I guess Marty just wanted to be the BMOC or something.

Well better a late deadhead, than never one.  I know their stuff when
I hear it, but I'm at a loss to remember the song titles.  They just
had some great 'feels' to their music.

I would not say it was worhip because I never really worshipped even my
favorite musicians (and music _was_ my life) but I was so angry when
Morrison killed himself.  The others did not affect me so much but with Jim
it seemed he was going to do so much more and then he wasn't going to do
anything.  Very sad.

I once saw Grace at about 50 say it would be pathetic for her to get on
stage and do what she did when she was young.

I still listen to Surrealistic Pillow pretty often.

Not a dead head but they are on my top list.

If you get to see a DVD called Festival Express you will see Jerry Garcia
telling Janis Joplin how much he loves her and that he always had a crush
on her.  This was while on the tour bus.  Talk about heart breaking.

The DVD is a must see in its own right but it can be very bitter-sweet if
you were there when it all was happening.

rROFL Love your sig, Will,  Gracie is now selling her "art" she rolled

Do you honestly believe this is the only news group he posts to?  The
fellow posts to every NG he can reach, including some empty ones.

Are you talking about in this newsgroup? I've only seen two of those
messages here.

Let me put it this way: What MI5 spam?

I use Pan and Agent with news.individual.net as the news server
(http://news.individual.net>).  It's a pay service (10 Euros a year) and
it does require that you use a standard news client rather than a web
browser.  Pan is a free client, but there are other free news clients
available, including one in Thunderbird.  The Microsoft clients have a
built-in trap: they encourage top posting, which is evil.

I use Outlook Express.  It doesn't encourage top posting as far as I can
see, so I am not sure what you mean.

1. When you "Reply to Group", the cursor is placed at the top of
the post.
2. Line Wrap doesn't work correctly when quoting previous posts,
especially when "nested".
3. Signatures don't follow the RFC convention, and OE strips out
trailing spaces after the two dashes so that other clients don't
recognise your .sig when others reply to you.
4. Conversely, OE doesn't strip out other people's signatures
when you reply to continue a thread.

Fortunately, there's a fix for all of these problems. Just Google
for "OE Quotefix", download and install the software - and
voilla! Robert is your father's brother!

Helen, is there a reason why you read groups through Google?  When my ISP
stopped providing a newsreader service I signed up to news.individual.net.
It's provided by the University of Berlin, initially it was free, but now it
costs me (IIRC) 10 euros per year and worth every penny.
They filter out almost all newsgroup spam, although one or two do
occasionally slip through.  I think I've seen less than half a dozen of
these MI5 posts *ever.*  The downside is they do not support binary groups.
When that flooding of thousands of posts of gobblededook took place a while
back (do you remember it?) I was able to email them to alert them to block
it and a "real person" replied to me about 10 minutes later saying words to
the effect of "thanks for the heads-up, but we would have noticed it
ourselves soon and taken the appropriate action."
I believe it was at that time that Victor signed up to n.i.n.

I heartily recommend them.  Lots of folks here use them, I believe.
You can set up filters, block sender, everything, unlike Google where you
seem to get the lot.  I've only used Google to read groups a couple of times
when I was away from home and there is simply no comparison.

Paid news group server (Easy News, Super News, Agent news server,
etc.) and an off line message reader like Agent, Eudora, Thunderbird
{free}, etc. so you can killfile easily.

Reading Usenet groups via Google is like trying to hold a wildcat. Way
more trouble than it's worth.

I get my news feed from news.individual.net, and I haven't been seeing
them. There price is very reasonable.

If you prefer a free server, aioe.org offers free news service. You
could then use it with Free Agent or Pan (or MT Newswatcher if you're on
a Mac) and filter by subject or author.

Maybe we're not getting so much of it in the US?

Not and use google.  That's why I pay the few dollars and use
news.individual.net.    They screen out that stuff most of the time.

Most of his stuff is getting pushed through www.altopia.com at the
moment.  Might forward a batch of it to them.  Meanwhile, I've got
filters set up for a lot of the variations he's created for MI-5.
It was a bit tedious, but so far, Thunderbird is doing a decent
job of filtering them out.

Happy New Year!

News.individual.net isn't showing any 'MI5' spam at all. Yes, it costs money
(10 Euro a year, IIRC) but I think its well worth it. Far far better than
reading via Google.

But there are free news services (aeio comes to mind) that you could use.
Outlook Express may not be the best newsreader, but it does have basic
killfile services, and again, its free with Windows.

Most ISPs still carry news, even if they don't particularly support it. Can
you access the news feed via your ISP?

I can't figure out a way either. It sucks.
