It's midnight here in Helsinki now, so let me wish you all a happy new
year! I've been at home, comforting the cats who are a bit unsettled by
the banging of fireworks that has been going on since 6 pm.

Frank and Nikki used to sit in the window watching the fireworks, but
Mir and Cali don't like it that much. Mir even spent an hour or so
snuggled in my lap, which never happens.

Most of our crew ignores fireworks, except for Xoxo, who thinks it's
thunder and thus goes hiding under a bed.

I'm in the final stages of a big batch of smoked duck gumbo I'm making
for dinner tonight. We're having friends over and we'll probably stay up
quite late. This weekend I made up a really tasty cocktail, I'm dying to
try it on my friends. It has lime-flavored tequila, orange-flavored
vodka, pomegranate liqueur and pomegranate juice. It's very tasty and
didn't feel all that strong, despite all the alcohol in it. :)

Cheers!

Victor, still 7.5 hours away from midnight

Hey everybody.  Drinks at Victor's place!

I didn't know there was a pomegranate liqueur.  Got to look for that one.

Happy New Year Marina and kitties!

Kathi & I went to our favorite restaurant for an early dinner and brought
home some venison for Five.

Hand-fed to the spoiled fur-daughter of course ;)

Purrs that the fireworks noises didn't freak them out too bad.

And a Happy New Year to you and your furry babies so far away.
I thought about you today, Marina...I read a short article in the
Sunday paper here about that cell-phone throwing contest they
have in a city starting with an "L" in Finland. LOL - have you
ever gone to that activity? In my home state in USA deep in the
FL Everglades they periodically have "greased flagpole climbing"
contests (heavy drinking preceding) where the losers fall into
the muck/mud around the pole. This is very funny to watch
from the sidelines.

I think mobile-phone throwing was invented in the same state of mind. ;)
The official World Championship web page is at

Our other national pastime, wife-carrying, has lately been invaded by
Estonians with very small wives, i.e. an unfair advantage. ;)

ROFL...wife-carrying would never go over in this country! If you
haven't heard
(unlikely but possible) we have a nationwide obesity problem and our
government
is attacking this problem by mandating what our schools feed our
children. Quick
fix? Don't think so, LOL.
