Folks awhile back you may remember me talking about the lady in a nearby
town where she was taking in stray cats. The county was trying to shut her
down saying the cats were mistreated and malnourished but all the cats had
their shots were neutered and very well taken care off. The news media
stepped in and showed that the officials lied about the situation.
Well tonight a suspicious fire broke out in her home. She does not know if
all the cats got out or not. She is taking care of many strays and
unwanted cats out of her own pocket. She lives on a huge farm and the
county is trying to shut her down. She is fighting tooth and nail. I have
donated to the law firm representing her. There is no reason she can't get
the permit to have a animal sanctuary on her property which is away from
neighbors and is disturbing no one. The city has no animal center and cut
is budget for animal rescue years ago giving over to Volusia county services
which operate nothing but kill shelters. She wants a permit to have a 250
cat shelter the county says you can only have 6 animals. The county has
refused to even acknowledge the request
So some purrs and prayers that all of the furballs are safe

Why do they want to shut her down? I don't mean what reason did they give,
since you already said they're claiming she's mistreating the cats. I mean,
what is their *real* reason for trying to stop her? I don't understand what
the problem could be, or who would be threatened by it, who would lose
money, etc. So what is the motivation?
That is very sad about the fire. I sure hope all the kitties got out safely.
But now she has no home. I hope she had fire insurance.
Purrs,

That's terrible! I feel so awful for her! I hope she takes the County
Gov't to the cleaners, legally speaking AND whoever it was who caused
a fire to damage her property, also. I hope all the kitties got out
safely, and thank goodness that SHE did.

Volusia County is historically in FL in the heart of the (shall-we-
call-it) "Good Ole Boy""
or "R**neck" region of the state, basically north FL. There really are
people and places
that you view in the late-night horror movies, I'm not proud to
say...."Hey, Paw, I'm gonna
take the double-ought out back and find out what made that Godawful
racket just now.."
Politics in that area consist of "you scrtch my back, I'll back you
up", and most pf the
city/county electeds/appointeds are either related to each other one
way or another or
since-childhood-buddies. Matthew by now must realize what he lives
among, unless
he is posting from another planet. These entities hate those of south
FL (my origin)
and unfortunately the state capital, Tallahassee, is also in the midst
of that region.
To sum up: this poor lady hasn't got a prayer of "cleaning up" with
the county, which
will, IMHO, find some method of eminent domain stuff to eventually own
her property!
Think I'm way off-base? Stick around, Matthew. She better get all
those poor felines
to safe harbor somewhere else....but I assume that she is aware what
she's dealing
with by now. This is a sad but frequent happening in my home state.

Matthew, I saw this story on the local TV news as we aren't too far from
there. What stood out to me was that the woman who owned the house and was
interviewed was well dressed, well groomed and articulate. The house, which
could be seen in the background (not all of it burned) was well cared for
and not in any manner of disrepair. Very unlike a collector. I'm truly
sorry she is going through this as she doesn't deserve to be kicked while
she is down and for having done good things. Keep us posted please.

I posted a reply earlier today ALL THE CATS ARE SAFE
She is not a collector from everything I have read ever cat has been
neutered, all the shots and up to date vet care with up to date information.
What started all this was the city of Pierson reported to Volusia county
that the cats were all malnourished and in need of medical treatment. The
county also said they had visited and they found the same thing. A news
reporter went there with live feed the cats were all well kept, healthy and
very friendly and she had all the medical information from the time she got
each cat it was all up to date. The reporter went to the county and city
and asked why they lied. The door was slammed in his face. She went on Dr.
Phil's show and got national recognition over this. Started a big stink
The county has refused to even recognize the petition for her to have a 250
cat sanctuary . Big mistake the law firm she has is the ones that have been
all over Volusia county for the misrepresentation of the budget spending.
It is a few select elderly busy bodies neighbors that are the complainers.
Their complaints have been such as they can here the cats all night long.
Real hard when they are inside over 20 acres away. Her house is trashy
you saw the news report and the news reporter was in the house unannounced
and the house was spotless. The cats are damaging their property. They are
free roaming. The law says a cat can be free roaming. There is nothing you
can do about it unless it is damaging property and that gives you the right
to humanely trap it and take it to a shelter. I think it is a case of
biting off more than they can chew and it blowing up in the face.
They are saying the bug bombs she was using caused the fire. IMO There is
something fishy about it; not about her, but the Fire Marshal has not talked
about it yet. She has received death threats and other property threats
quite a bit
What this lady is going thru is why the shelter that I was sponsoring left
town. It became a circus to even try and keep up with all the permit
requirements which are not held to the standards of the county or city
shelters. It is all about politics and money and WHO suffers the four legs
due to some POS greedy $@#$@$@$. I need a bath after even talking about it
that is how dirty the subject is.

Dude, I realize you are stressed about all this, but try not to get
sick over it,
please. Your last two sentences in the recent post says it all (what I
posted
earlier)...largely it is known as "fighting City Hall" - and I don't
care how many
high-powered lawyers the unfortunate lady has, that's still the name
of the
]game up there :o( I can't stand Dr. Phil; I think he is an arrogant
a****** but
if he likes cats I may rethink my opinion of him (this has nothing to
do with
the cat lady).
Aside to Outsider: the key word in Matt's post re bombs causing fire
is *BUG*
prefix. Have you ever used a "bug bomb"? Stinky, yes, but no way
causing fire.
And to your query re potential "developer" of lady's property: the way
things
work in areas like I described in my post (Volusia County, for one) is
that
once someone/something rattles their cage, the Good Ole Boys of county
govt. dig up some form of eminent domain to seize the property.
Something
like this is going on *right now* in my area of MileHigh but it
doesn't involve
cats. And what happens to the $$$ when the county eventually sells the
property (yeah, to developers)? I'd say, "hee hee" only it ain't funny
at all.

I wish I could not stress out about it. Due to BS politics here in central
Florida shelters are impossible to get permits for. The current shelters
are over filled beyond capacity to where the kill shelters wait only the
customary 72 hours some are done at less than 48 hours. People who pets
got lot come to find out they where found and put to sleep 24 hours later
some even with microchips. The current shelters are being target by
ordinances trying basically to push them out.
Me and the shelter manager fought tooth and nail until she got sick of the
situation sold the property and moved to another state. Now there is only
a few no kill shelters. Volusia county recently contacted me for donations
for animal control. I told them no way. I will donate directly to the
shelter and keep their greedy fingers out of it. The County shelter put to
sleep over 30,000 cats alone that made me cry
