Hi there:
I caught poor kitty this afternoon. He'd had two cans of cat food in
rapid succession and I put the trap by the hole under my porch where I'd
been feeding him. He went for the tuna and the trap snapped shut. He
was cold and desperate I think. Moved quite slowly the last time I went
out. Needed to get warm.
It was the most watched cat trap in the history of mankind since both
older children were staring out the window all day until then. We knew
immediately that we'd got him.
Sam and I put him in the back of the car with a big blanket on the cage
and took him to the SPCA (the other non-profit cat rescues are all
full). They looked at him and he had no tattoo or chip - he is an
intact male over a year old but tiny.
He is stunning. A beautiful oval face, green eyes, and grey grey GREY -
grey velvet nose and fur. Sam named him "Star". They've given me his
case number and I'll be checking on his progress. He yowled like crazy
when the blanket was lifted but was gentle and appeared calm when they
transfered him to the cat carrier. He seems to have known people in
some way and is not totally feral.
I hated to leave him there. We absolutely can't have three for so many
reasons. I am at least glad that he's not out in the cold winter.
Please, could we have big purrs that little Star finds a forever home?
He was so brave to approach the house, find some food, and take the
plunge into the trap.
Thanks,

loving forever home very soon. He is at least not having to battle for
his cold weather survival as a stray, anymore.

Thank you Melissa. I think your girls might find him quite handsome and
appealing!
It was below 0 Farenheit lastnight and I too am thankful that he wasn't
out there. Also, I could actually sleep knowing that he was inside ...

You bet I'll be checking up on him! The kids were really caught up in
trying to catch him ... and with all the cats at the SPCA. Sam was
particularly ga-ga over a cream medium haired boy kitten that took a
shine to him. I could have taken every single one of those cats.

Of course, lots of purrs for the brave little mite. It sounds like he
may be at least part Russian Blue. Does he have a very long tail with
faint stripes?

Ah thanks Marina - I'll bet that Caliban and Mere have some nice rumbly
and dainty purrs to offer up for little Star :-)
I think he might have more in common with the Korats that I've seen than
the Russian Blues. He didn't seem to have stripes in his tail - he was
uniformly grey. It was the heart-shaped face that makes me think of the
Korat?

OK. I didn't know what a Korat looks like, so I googled for them. They
actually look a bit like Mir's mother Kira. She has a rounder face and
stockier body than Mir.
Not that I really care about breeds, you know. I just happen to live

thank you Will - little is the operative word. My cats looked like
giants when I came home after having getting a look at Star at the SPCA.
I told the volunteers there that I thought he was about 9 months old.
They said his teeth clearly put him at least at a year old, maybe
older. Wow. Don't know if his diet just hasn't been great or if its
just genetics.

We have four of the tiniest Himalayans at our house. They were Micki's
cats before I even met her. Then we have a mixed-breed who belonged to
my mom before she went to the bridge. WooToo weighs almost as much,
without really being very fat, as all the Himmys put together,
seventeen pounds for her, nineteen for them. All five of them chow
down like there was no tomorrow, although we try to keep WooToo's
consumption to a dull roar. Cats don't come in as many sizes as d*gs
but they do vary quite a lot.

I always thought of Himmys as being BIG cats too. Well, there you go!
They had some spectacularly large cats at the SPCA when we were there.
I really like big cats and big dogs. Maybe it's because I'm close to
5'11" that I need super sized creatures around me ;-)
There was a girl cat there - a grey/brown tabby - that must have been
about 30 pounds. No kidding. Overweight for sure but also a gigantic
head. There was a male tuxedo of the same size as well.
My favourite was a long-haired boy named Malcom who was so fluffy that
he had tufts of hair coming up between his toes. We just looked at him
and cooed and he started kneading and rubbing the cage in ecstasy. Then
followed upside downy head, which caused him to fall off the top shelf
and knock over his food, because he was just too big. I tried to get a
straight link to his picture http://www.calgaryhumane.ca/ but it all
shows this same link. Anyone who's interested can click the above link,
go to browse, and see Malcolm third from the bottom on the outside left.
Star will find it easier to eat there since the food kept freezing
outside :-(

Yes, big purrs coming up for Star to find his onetruehome. It reminds me of
when I was trying to trap Boyfriend. He had obviously lost his way home
somehow and I didn't want another cat, so I was going to catch him and take
him to a no-kill shelter. He was clever enough to enter the trap and scoop
the food out with his paw over the treadle that would have set it off. I
watched him do it, from inside my kitchen.
I had to do it the hard way. No feeding outside, a plate of yummy gooshy
just inside the door. Then 6 inches inside, then a foot. Door open all the
time, this is very important for shy semi-feral cats, they need to know they
can escape.
By the time I got him really inside the kitchen, slowly moving the food
further and further from the door - I have a big kitchen 16 ft x 12 ft, I'd
fallen in love with him.
I know he was owned before because he had quite a posh collar on. I wish I
could tell his previous owners that he is happy here, maybe they worry about
where he is. They should have had him microchipped. And perhaps neutered
too..
Both now done.
It's a wonderful thing that you have done for this stray cat, Susan. Your
karma has increased bigtime ;-)

Thank you Christina. Your Boyfriend story is so wonderful - he clearly
had to string you along until you fell in love with him :-) You had
such patience with him!
I'm surprised that someone wouldn't have at least neutered him given the
fancy collar and all. So glad that he found your home!
I often wonder about O&C's homes before ours and wonder about their
stories. Otis found stray in late February (very cold) and Chester, I
think, surrendered by his owners. Of course, a few hours with Otis and
I could understand why maybe his previous owners wouldn't let him in
anymore ;-) He *still* doesn't sleep through the night at almost 12 yo!!!

Well, you know they don't make it easy. The city won't get involved in
the winter, the no-kill shelters were full and not taking phone
messages, you have to drive to the far SE of the city, pay a $50 deposit
to get the trap, bait the trap, agree to check it every couple of hours
and to a bunch of other complicated instructions, and then drive back
with the cat. I didn't mind doing it at all but not everyone would do
that for "just a cat". Glad we got him though!
And while we there, a young hip guy showed up with a little kitten that
he'd found on his fence and gave in the kitty. Obviously a stray and
absolutely stunning. Appearances can be deceiving I guess - he was very
concerned about the cat, which was very nice to see.
