I am the person who originally posted the message about the cat
suffocating in a pail of scoopable litter with a flip-top lid. This
message has been picked up by a number of cat groups. My husband
wanted me to add some info. He experimented with the lid and
discovered that it does not have to be all the way snapped shut to
create an airtight seal. Even if the top part of the lid is not pushed
down all the way until it clicks, this canister is still dangerous. If
the two parts are the lid are connecting, the cat cannot get out or
get air. If you have this type of canister, get it away from your cats
or drill some holes in the lid. Our Geordi died on Dec. 14th.

I am so very sorry for your loss of Geordie. We've lit a candle for
her.

I'm so sorry this happened :(  What brand was it? Or can you say?

I'm so terribly sorry for your loss in such tragic circumstances. A candle
will be lit for Geordi.

I am so sorry for your loss.

Also, thank you for posting so that we know that this is a real event
and not a made-up story (and isn't it sad that we've seen enough
hoaxes about tragedies that we have to be wary of any such messages).

I am so sorry for your loss, losing your beloved kitty in such a
tragic, freak
accident like that. Thank you for clarifying the circumstances. I was
the poster
who also experimented with the lid and just couldn't see how it could
be closed tightly
by a cat jumping on it. I had no idea that the lid did not have to be
completely snapped down
tight to become airtight. Cutting air holes is a good solution, too. I
don't know whether
the company would be amiable to changing their lid design, but maybe
if we knew who
to write to, they would consider printing a warning on the label? I
would be willing
to write a letter.
Again, I am  so sorry about Geordi.
