My Bobby-Cat is very ill

Mishi - 27 Dec 2007 02:54 GMT
Last weekend I noticed that Bobby's fur looked spikey, and he just
wasn't himself. I made a mental note to call his vet and get him seen
today. Last night, he started vomiting clear fluid, and didn't want to
eat, so I called the vet at 7:30 am to make the appointment. When I
got there, they took us right into a room, and took Bobby to be
weighed. At his last visit, 4 months ago, he weighed 17 1/2 lbs.
Today, he weighed 10.5 lbs. He is jaundiced, and severely dehydrated.
The tests they did show that his kidney functions are not good, and
his liver enzymes are on the high side of normal. They don't quite
know what is going on, as the vet said she couldn't give one name to
what is causing his problems. Right now, she is leaning towards kidney
failure causing him to not eat, and triggering fatty liver disease.
She is just not sure. :(

He is staying the night at the hospital, with IV fluids and rice packs
around him to keep him warm.  The vet warned me that he might not make
it through this, and I told her that I was ready for that.

I hate to have him pts, and if the vet says that  there is anyway we
can turn him around, it will be done.

Now it is in Bast's paws.

They are so small to begin with that it is easy to miss the beginnings
of these problems. You and your vet will do what you can and we are
all purring for you.

Oh, that is so upsetting. Especially to discover that he's lost so much
weight. Fatty liver is a possibility, with that much weight loss. But I've
known a number of cats who had fatty liver who did survive it, so it
doesn't have to be fatal.

I'll have my guys purr for him to get through this!

I am very sorry to hear that your kitty is so ill.

They are very, very good at hiding the fact that they are sick.

When my Lucky(RB) was old and got sick, she hid her food, instead of
eating it, so I didn't know she was sick, and wasn't eating for far too
long :-(

This just made things worse, of course. I always have thought that if I
had noticed Lucky was sick, even a few days earlier, she might have
recovered, and lived years longer :-(

I hope you have caught it in time, and that with treatment, your
Bobby-Cat will make a complete recovery.

Purrs are on the way.
