Four's day was on the surface uneventful. Yet amazing things are happening
to him.  Dr. Mulero explained to me that there would be changes in him and
to him as his body shifted it's energy needs from survial (100% alert to
danger even while sleeping, the ever pressing need for food and the constant
attempts of his system to heal his wound).  He is no longer hiding in the
Kitty Klubhouse, what a delight to see him napping deeply on the chaise
lounge.  He greets me every time I go out to the porch; now I am not
concieted enough to think it is my charming personality, it is FOOD he is
looking for, but still he greets me and I am able to pet him all over and
talk to him, we've come a long way from when he swiped me!  The wound is
progressing as Dr. Mulero told me it would. Four is filling out slowly and
he continues to be expressive using his eyes, tilt of his head and his
numerous meows.  But most amazing, just blew me away is what is happening
with his coat of fur.  It was evident that Four was a pure bred Maine Coon
Cat or close to it.  But his fur was only medium length and course and
bristly.  Four days ago I glanced out the kitchen window to the porch and
saw Four sitting on the chaise lounge. Mmmm, his fur seemed to be lying
against his body, not sticking out bristly.  I petted him and sure enough it
was less bristly and a bit smooth.  Today, two days later, Four's fur is
soft and silky.
I'm embarrassed to say that I had always thought that cats that were strays
were cats that were hungry and homeless. Never did I realize that they were
challenged to their very core for survival. That their systems had to take
energy from such things as growing fur to supply what was needed to keep
warm, be able to chase prey, be alert, and so on. What a gift to be able to
help him reach his potential and lead a good life. And I am not doing it
alone. You folks are doing it to too. If Four were ever to be entered in a
cat show on his registration form for owner would appear: RPCA.  Thank you
so very much.

Cats respond so readily to the right treatment.  We are purring for him to
continue to improve.  Bless you for looking after him.

That's fantastic! It's so good to hear about these positive changes
that are happening to him. I'm sure he will grow to love you and not
just your food.

I'm glad he's doing so well.  Even a thin fat layer and the time to groom in
peace do wonders for a cats fur.  Just wait till you see what he can manage
come spring and a new coat.

Awww. I sure hope that he wound can actually heal now. I come everyday
to see how things are progressing. He sounds like he is really coming
along.

Cats are so much like people.  When they are depressed they stop caring
for themselves.  Add to that his injury and I bet four was not doing much
"cat upkeep".  I bet he is now.  Dr. M is very smart to know this and
perhaps you wont even need drugs to help Four heal if he just feels
happier which it sure sounds like he does.  My very first cat was a
"rescue" and she turned out to be so devoted to me it was really
something.  I think Four already knows that you are saving him.  You've
done great and you have a great vet.

You know the old saying "you never stand so tall as when you stoop to
help a child" I add to that or a small creature.

It's wonderful to read about the improvements in Four. Purrs are
continuing. Your Dr Mulero sounds like he really knows what he's doing.
(I sent a card to thank him.)

Watching Sam's personality develop when he moved in with us was one of
the joys of adopting him.  Now he comes to me and reaches a paw out to
touch me, telling me he wants my attention or he lies in my arms and
stares into my eyes and I simply melt. The only time we're reminded
that he lived as a stray for many years is that he is terrified of
dogs.  If a dog barks on a television show it frightens him and goes
into flight mode. We quickly turn the volume off and reassure him that
the dog can't get to him.  The same happens when the neighbors dogs
bark and the house is quiet so we can hear them.  It reminds me of
everything bad that can happen out there to a stray cat. Special purrs
and gentle headbutts to you, Larry and Dave - you most especially and
your vet for giving the right advice to you.

What a wonderful way for me start Christmas Eve by reading your post.  Purrz
and prayers for four to continue to grow.  Give yourself credit, love goes a
long way is making humans of animals feel secure and, he is getting a large
measure of that from you.

I'm so glad to hear life is improving for, Four, continued purrs for him, I
hope it won't be much longer before his wound can be treated and he'll be
even happier,

another thing you might not have thought of is that he might now be
comfortable enough to concern himself with concentrating on grooming where
before just staying alive was the big focus, as he gets more comfortable he
will groom more and more and that will make his fur very soft, Lee
