For next year's holidays, Julie was looking for a volunteer to do it as she
wishes to retire after several years of wonderful effort.
So, thankyou Julie.
If folks are willing to use a Yahoo group for this, i'd be happy to be the
owner/moderator.
I'd propose it works something like this:
Its a 'secret' group, in that it wont' be listed in the Yahoo directory
Its a 'invite only' list, so that I have to invite you, rather than you sign
up (will stop people joining up, looking aruond, and then unsubscribing)
There is no in group e-mail, except for 'new member' notifications (if that
is possible) Only the moderators (that would be me, and maybe some other
crazy volunteer who might want to help) can send e-mail to group members.
Everyone adds their details to a central yahoo-group database.
In October, i send out 2 reminders to get your info up to date, and remind
RPCA & Catslaves to get their acts together :-).
On Nov 1, I crosscheck the database with the members list - anybody who is a
member and does not have their details in the database will be booted from
the list (exceptions can be given, but they'd better be good). Anyone who is
the database but not a member will have their details removed from the
database. Anyone who wishes to be a member, be in the databse, but does not
wish to participate will be put into the 'receive only' category
By Nov 7, I finish the crosschecking and send out the database file in text
format to all members of the list. Updates will continue until Dec 7 or so.
By Dec 7 or so the list is declared closed for that year, meaning that if
you aren't on the final list, people are not obliged to send you cards that
year. Any person becoming a member and putting themselves in the database
after Dec 7 is quite welcome to send out cards to the people in the
database, though, and those with excellent powers of observation may notice
a new member and send cards to them if they so choose, on the understanding
that they aren't onthe 'official' list for that year.
Suggestions, comments, etc etc.
I figure a yahoogroup would be an easier way to manage all the addresses and
members than the way its currently done. YMMV, hence why I want comments and
suggestions.

Am I the only one that doesn't like this idea? I don't have a Yahoo ID, I
thought the current system of email was fine.

You don't *need* a Yahoo ID (although it does make my life a little easier),
you just need a functioning e-mail address. The 'users' shouldn't see much
of a difference from any other year - you send your name & address in, and
sooner or later a whole bunch of addresses to mail cards to is returned.
What it does mean for the owner (and that may not always be me) that they
don't have to collate 50 odd addresses each year from scratch - it collates
itself. It should also make managing the list easier, as *most* of the
people on last year's list were also on this year's list and the details
hadn't changed, and most of all, it should make sending out the list easier
on the list owner.

You DON'T want to trust your email address to a service like Yahoo
with a track record of passing personal data on to spammers. That's
why I have never subscribed to any Yahoo mailing list.
Far better to do this manually. 50 addresses is easy enough.

My immediate reaction is to say "do you want to do the Christmas card list,
then?"

I'm a member of about 20 different groups (using different accounts) and a
moderator or owner of 4, yet I don't get any spam from Yahoo nor have I ever
seen any evidence for Yahoo passing on any personal data to anyone.
Still, its not like anyone is forcing folks to participate - if you don't
like the arrangements, don't join.

I'd be more than happy to stand aside and let someone else do the work - are
you volunteering?

I have a Yahoo account where I use my Yahoo e-mail address, where all
the spam goes to. The spam didn't start to come in until I started using
the yahoo address on Usenet, though.

Spammers actually target any combination of letters and numbers they can
come up with to spam on yahoo. There is a good likelihood of hitting an
active account. I have a hotmail account that I use that draws that kind
of spam. I never get it on my regular internet provider account. It
isn't that Yahoo or hotmail give out the active addresses, spammers
happen upon them because there are so many active addresses out there
and they know if it didn't bounce back that it is a good address so they
will keep using it.
On my private internet accounts that are signed up for yahoo groups, I
have never had any spam that seemed to increase as a result of signing
up for those groups. The spam I get on those accounts I can always
relate back to signing up for something else on the web or whatever (due
to name spelling or address done wrong or something else specific).

Vicky,
This sounds like a great idea to me. We would need to figure out the
best way to add the few "Receive Only" entries that aren't really a
part of the group. Norma Mundy, "Bluebird" and Dave and Dot come to
mind. But I'm sure we could work that out.

Oh, thats easy - I can enter those details into the Database myself. There
will be those who aren't strictly subscribed to the list but are in the
Databse - They'll have a note in their comments section so I (and anyone who
comes after me) will know not to throw them.
