Takayuki - 18 Nov 2004 06:18 GMT Anyone else notice their cats' sleeping habits changing with the weather? The coming winter will be my second one with Betty, and she's starting to beg to get under the covers with me, just like she did last year. Most of the year, Betty sleeps on top of the covers on my chest or stomach, but now, she'll paw at the right shoulder to get me to lift up the covers so that she can get in.
When Betty is under the covers with me, she usually sleeps with her chin and one foreleg draped over my right biceps, and my hand on her flank. When I get up in the morning, it's an awwww moment when I first see her next to me. Her position on my arm is like that of an exhausted swimmer hanging onto a log, except she has the most contented smile on her face. She's right next to my head, and I'm already holding her, so it's a perfect time for kisses.
Yesterday, Betty told me that she wanted the best of both worlds, and insisted on sleeping on my tummy while under the covers. This is something new. If people saw that, they would probably wonder why I have this big lump under the covers.
Karen Chuplis - 18 Nov 2004 06:22 GMT > Anyone else notice their cats' sleeping habits changing with the > weather? Absolutely. But what I can't figure out is that it isn't really connected to temperature. Grant and Sugar started sleeping with me again in Sept. when it was still warm. In April, Grant will go back to his window. The temp in the apartment is relatively the same year round. But they definitely have a "seasonal clock".

But they definitely have a >"seasonal clock". That's another thing that I notice - Betty doesn't sleep in front of the windows when the days get shorter. Maybe it's because the sun doesn't feel as warm.

In the summer we're lucky if we get one cat, usually Luna, to sleep in bed with us. As the weather starts getting cooler, we get more and more cats. Basho likes to get under the covers, between the sheet and the comforter, right between my legs... :)

Neither of mine like sleeping under covers, although they both sleep on the bed. I was leafing through a cat book at a sale yesterday, and came across the statement that cats sleep 16 hours a day. That statement must refer to other cats, younger, more active cats! Either that, or my cats are awake for most of the time I am not home.
Now, I'm not saying that they sleep *heavily*. But a cat who is apparently asleep on the top of the scratching post while I eat, and who then awakes long enough to follow me to the computer room, where she settles on the pillow or windowsill to sleep some more, is *not* spending much of her time awake in any meaningful sense of the word.

Her favorite things to guard are her cat dancer, and the mice. :)

I'm so jealous - none of my cats like to get under the blankets. Simon was the only one who would - he used to sleep with one paw and his chin on my arm just like your Betty. Maybe one of the others will take up the under-the-blanket habit next winter. Purring teddy bears!

A previous cat, Frosty (RB), loved being used for a teddy cat. He'd just snuggle in under the covers, plop his head on my arm, and purr us both to sleep.

In the summer he will sleep downstairs on top of his cat tree near the window. When the weather starts getting colder, he will come upstairs where I am most of the time and sleep on the bed in the computer room. Sometimes he stays there all night. Jazz & his mama

Marina - 19 Nov 2004 03:40 GMT > Anyone else notice their cats' sleeping habits changing with the > weather? No, Frank and Nikki sleep on the bed, on top of the covers, whatever the weather, summer or winter. Frank starts out on the pillow beside my head, purring me to sleep, then he moves down to my feet. Nikki lies by my feet or, like last night, she starts out by my shoulder but moves down to my feet during the night.
Sometimes, very rarely, when I take an afternoon nap, one of them wants to come under the blankie with me, but only for a short while. I don't know what has changed, they used to enjoy sleeping under the blankie when they were younger.

The problem I've been having lately is that my scanner, printer, and digital camera are all Canon USB devices, and there's some sibling rivalry going on there that causes them to fight each other.

Sibling rivalry, LOL! Yes, you just can't make those kids share their SCSI's!

Takayuki - 24 Nov 2004 23:01 GMT Betty is still an undercover kitty, but it's been a year, so she's still a bit rusty, and is in the process of perfecting her technique.
Over the last few days, Betty has been trying to find new ways to snuggle closer to me while sleeping. The latest thing she does is to sleep sideways facing me, and embrace my shoulder from underneath.
This is basically an evolution of what she was originally doing, which was using my right biceps as a pillow. Now, she uses my right front deltoid as her pillow, and presses her entire body against my right side.
This also brings her even closer to my face, so she reaches out her right paw and puts it on my cheek. Betty is becoming a master of multiple positions and techniques.

You really got chosen by the right animal companion.
My cats all sleep with me at night, but nobody snuggles up near my face or even under the covers. They do cuddle with me during the day, so I guess I can't complain.

You really got chosen by the [quoted text clipped - 3 lines] >or even under the covers. They do cuddle with me during the day, so I >guess I can't complain. It's the day-time cuddling that you really remember anyway. Plus, Betty has to get out of bed maybe about two or three times per night, and she wakes me up when she comes back to cuddle.
What she has me do is lift up the covers with my left hand and extend my right arm. Then, she walks under the covers, stepping over my right arm, then turns around and lays down with her chin on the upper part of my arm. I then put the covers down on top of her so that her head is sticking out. She'll move in close and hold me, which then gives me the freedom to bend my elbow and put my right hand on my stomach (I sleep sort of in a mummy-like position). This puts Betty in a light headlock, which gives her the leverage necessary to squirm even closer to me, so that she can touch my face with her paw.
I guess it's all a complicated procedure! :)
