Maybe I've mentioned a few times before that Caliban is a Food Hound. It
must be hard for a FH to live with a vegetarian hoomin, but Caliban has
adapted wonderfully. You'd think I could have my vegetarian dishes in
peace, but Caliban is of the opinion that a FH's duty is to beg for
their hoomin's food, and so he does, whatever I have on my plate.

I can always expect him to sit with his nose hanging over my plate and
drooling into my food as I'm eating. Sometimes I let him sniff it,
saying 'see? You don't like this.' Then I have to snatch the plate away
as he starts to take a bite. :P

The other day I made pasta with a simple tomato sauce - just strained
tomatoes and some black olives, with a few herbs and pepper. After I had
combined the sauce and the pasta, I left the sauce pan on the stove
while I ate the food. Then I heard eager kitty licking going on
somewhere. I thought maybe some pasta had been left in the strainer.
Caliban loves those. But when I went to look, he was eagerly licking the
saucepan. With plain tomato sauce.

Last night, I made my version of lasagna, which does not contain lasagna
noodles at all but thinly sliced zucchini instead. And a plain tomato
sauce. When I'd assembled the food and put it in the oven, I left the
sauce pan on the stove again. Later heard eager licking again. Yup,
Caliban licking plain tomato sauce.

I'd say Caliban has adapted very well to living with a vegetarian.

You have my sympathy! Sarsi likes sprouts and will nibble them quite
happily cooked or fresh...alas we don;t really like what happens a few
hours later...sorry a sprout loaded kitten fart is one of the
worse...if not the worse stench ever! This is a small flat but not
that small and the result of Sarsi eating sprouts permeates the air
all over the place!

I swear I once saw her lift her tail and move 10 feet or so forwards
without using her legs- she was brussel sprout boosted!

lucky that didn't happen but it would be dangerous as he is a senior kitty
to start with, might be arrested for having a weapon of mass destruction,

LOL! When I eat corn on the cob, Caliban begs for it and I have to break
off a kernel here and there for him to keep him off my cob.

All my cats have loved tomato sauce, especially Stinky, the Scent
Connoisseur.  And when I brought home tiny Mimi, she hid under the bed until
I offered her some lasagna. ;)

Well, lasagna contains cheese, so I wouldn't be so surprised, but I would
have thought that tomato sauce was too acidic for cats to like. Caliban
always insists on licking the carton when I open one with strained
tomatoes. But then, he insists on licking bean cartons and tins, too. :P

Well, as we all know, as soon as you make a statement about what "cats
like", a cat will immediately appear who violates that rule. There should
probably be a name for this phenomenon.

I know. These days, I'm not at all surprised when Miranda insists on
licking the juice carton. Yes, orange juice.

Most of ours won't eat things like tomato sauce but Sunrise loves to
get close to the plate and inhale the aroma of a variety of foods,
including tomato sauce. However, she also loves to SNEEZE on the food
after doing this, so we don't let her.

Hugo Katt (RB) used to love tomato sauce and ketchup. Otherwise he had no
interest in human food. Except chicken.

I used to have a cat who *loved* anything with tomato sauce. So this
doesn't surprise me at all. And of course Garfield, the cartoon cat who
might not be all that well-known in Finland (have you seen it?), was
famous for being able to devour an entire pan of lasagne.

That sounds yummy! Do you have a recipe for that? I'd like to try making
it.

Thanks,
Joyce

Yes, we get Garfield here. He is called Karvinen in Finnish and Gustaf
in Swedish. :)

I don't have a recipe, I just wing it, but here's roughly what goes into it:

1 large, firm zucchini

Tomato sauce:
olive oil
1 onion
vegetables of choice (last time, I put shredded carrots and sweet corn
into it)
dollop (exact measurement :) ) of tomato paste
400 grams strained tomatoes
salt, pepper
basil, oregano (or herbs of choice)

Bechamel sauce
pat (another exact measurement :) ) of margarine
2 Tbsp flour (I used spelt flour, because I didn't have white flour)
500 ml milk
salt, pepper

shredded cheese (I used a mixture of Cheddar and Mozzarella)

Cut the zucchini in thin slices lengthwise - I use a cheese slicer, an
implement that is common in Scandinavia, but AFAIK not much used in
other parts of the world. Leave the strips to rest until assembly. I've
seen recipes where they are grilled at this point, but I haven't tried that.

Heat the olive oil in a pan and add the chopped onion. Sauté until it is
translucent, then add vegetables and sauté a few more minutes. Turn up
heat and add tomato paste. Let it sizzle for a while, then add strained
tomatoes (or tin of chopped tomatoes). Add seasoning and let the sauce
simmer for some 15 minutes.

Meanwhile, make the bechamel sauce. Melt the margarine (or butter) in a
saucepan. Whisk in the flour, then gradually the milk. Simmer until it
thickens. Season with salt and pepper.

Assemble the lasagna in a casserole dish. Pour a little bechamel into
the bottom. Layer zucchini slices, then tomato sauce, then bechamel and
sprinkle cheese on top. Repeat until everything is in the dish. Finish
with a layer of zucchini, bechamel, and generous layer of cheese.

Cook in medium oven for 20-30 minutes.

[snip, for space only]

Thank you! That sounds great! I don't mind the estimated amounts, I
usually just eyeball things when I cook, so that'll be fine.

When I have time to make it (sounds like it's labor intensive), I will
try it and let you know how it goes.

Way to go Caliban ... and you've made be very hungry.  Love a good plate

Caliban knows what is good for him. Tomato sauce has a lot of vitamins
in it. But there is something very attractive about the taste. Amber
(RB) used to love the sauce on pizza while ignoring the cheese. And he
loved the tomato sauce in a can of Campbells pork n' beans.

Mischief - 18 Dec 2007 06:48 GMT
Mischief LOVES anything with tomato sauce.  Any spaghetti dish,
tonight I made cassarole with tomato sauce, penne, and ground pork and
beef.  When I was done, I was watching tv and Mischief casually walked
up, sniffed gingerly then snuck in her nose and started licking.
*sigh*

But nothing, NOTHING can top the time I was reheating a pot of
spaghetti sauce with ground beef on the stove.  I reheated it and then
turned off the stove and went to do something else while it cooled.  A
good twenty minutes later, I came back to the kitchen......

And saw Mischief ON the stove, with her head IN the pot of sauce, and
she was lapping away.

Minx......
