Four Dec 14 2007

Changes, changes, changes.  Changes that happened and changes that will
happen. I moved the loaded trap from the Laundry Room to the Porch last
night.  This morning Four had not gone into it. He had not used the litter
box either. It is my belief that he is VERY TRAP SAVY and will not go to it
no matter how long I leave the food there or how hungry he gets. This is
not good.  I sat with Dr. Mulero for quite a while and we worked out a plan
that we belive will work based on Four's behavior last night, the injury
that the vet saw the picture of, the suggestion of Dewi to intergrate a
seditive in to the plan and my familiy's ability to care for Four while he
is being treated.

First thing Dr. Mulero wanted was to get rid of the trap. As soon as I
removed it from the room and put Four's food down he was right there chowing
down. Count that as one victory for the vet and one victory for the cat!
I'm to spend time on the porch reading, fiddling with the plants, (poor
plants) talking to Four, re-establishing the relationship. At that time Dr.
Mulero will give me Penicillin in a food pocket which will go into Four's
meal. He should be able to swallow it right down. This will beging the
healing process for the neck wound. It may take many weeks the good doctor
informed me. Our family, and I hope you guys, can handle it. When the wound
is either healed or well on it's way we will evaluate whether or not Four
trusts me enough to pick him up.  If so I can put him in a crate and take
him to met Dr. Mulero in person. If Four is not that trusting then the good
doctor will give me either a pill or show me how to administer a liquid
seditive to him so that he can be crated and taken for his physcial and lab
work. It may be months from now that his will occur but it is happening!

I already know what my New Year's Resolution will be: A healthy; catnip year
for Four.  Dr. M is amazed at the interest in Four. He can't figure why a
vet in Wales wants a call about Four.  And why it is a cat owner who I've
never met suggested the seditive. And why 50 people from all over the United
States, England, Finland, Australia, and other countries I don't remeber
right now are pulling for the little guy. RPCA is an awesome bunch indeed.
Do you think he would understand the Power of the Purr?

No, probably not.  I happened to mention once to the vet when KFC was there
that she had e-mails from all over the world for her recovery.  I got a very
funny look, like I was making it up.
Whatever will work to get Four healed and sorted gets my vote.

When I had my Scooter Dog put to sleep, what a way to put it, anyway, I took
with me copies of all the wonderful thoughts from the people on
rec.pets.cats.community and made him promise to send them with her when she
was cremated.  He did this and informed me that he, the man at the
crematorium and some of the workers made copies of them because they were so
filled with feeling.  I just wanted these thoughts and a copy of "the
venture" to go with Scooter when we scattered her ashes.  Most folks would
get it, I wouldn't have three years ago.

Ohhhhh, what a beautiful, heart strings tugging story. What a wonderful
thought you had for a beautiful send off for Scooter Dog wrapped in love and
kindness. I will never forget you telling this Granby.  Thank you.

It certainly surprised my TED when Rocky was there fighting his last
fight. When I arrived with Rocky I told him I was short on money but
wanted everything done for Rocky that he could do. The next day when I
checked in on Rocky he told me he was getting calls and donations for
the bill from all over the world. Rocky didn't make it, but donations
from the group more than covered the bill, and left a credit balance
which went towards helping cover the cost for other needy cats.

Fantastic.  The first time I remember this happening was many, many years
ago and it was for a kitty named Jill. I think it was with Helen S (?) in
England and the cat was injured when hit by a car. No one claimed the kitty
so she was named for the woman who found her. The cat recovered nicely as I
remember.  The vet's office there, too, was overwhelmed by the outpouring of
love, caring and money. Someone who remembers the story better than I can
clarify the facts and hopefully tell us "the rest of the story."

Well, I'll never forget when Smudge was attacked by dogs, and required
about $900 of medical care - which I, unemployed for almost 3 years by
that point and not only broke, but deeply in debt, was completely unable
to pay - and people from all over on this newsgroup helped out with her
bill until it was completely paid off. The amazing thing was that some
people whose names I didn't even recognize, because they're lurkers,
helped too. The vet staff were amazed but very pleased when I explained
what was happening. This is truly a remarkable group.

It was Helen S and the cat was Waffles (aka WafflyCat).  IIRC, Jill was
the TED.

I wasn't here yet at that time, but the story is in the rpca FAQ, which

This group also helped me so much in 2002 when my kitty Jasper (RB) had
surgery and then crossed over. I was unemployed at the time, and TED got
phone calls from all over the world giving credit card numbers and
donating money. His bill was almost entirely covered, and IIRC, I only
paid about $50 of it. This group is amazing.

He's a good guy and grew up to be a vet.  He may not know it, but he has
already experienced the power of purr.

Jo, I believe you are right. Dr. Mulero is a stout man in his late 40's
possibly early 50's (I'm not good at guessing ages). He speaks with an
accent that I can not identify. He extrudes kindness. The first time I met
him was the end of last January.  Our very, very dear and precious 13 year
old Mr. Pumpkin had been attacked by two pit bull dogs in his own yard and
they dragged him away.  I heard the barking and ran out chasing the evil
dogs away. The P was stunned from being shaken violently. I gathered him in
my arms and ran accross the two yards screaming for Larry, our roommate. The
Pumpkin was alive at that time and hurting I must have jostled him as he
reached out and scratched me across the face. St. Francis Vet Clinic is only
12 blocks from my house. I cradled Pumpkin as Larry drove. Half way there
Mr. Pumpkin sighed his last breath. We got to the clinic and the girl at the
desk got the vet who was Dr. Mulero out of surgery to tend to us.  That vet
tried and tried and tried so hard to have Pumpkin be not dead.  When there
was no more he could do he said so kindly, "Your cat has passed away, I'm so
sorry." He got a box and gently laid The Pumpkin to rest in it.  He didn't
know me from a hole in the wall. He would not charge me, I was not a client,
I had never set foot in that practice before. You are right, Jo, he is a
good guy, a very, very good guy.  I'm glad he is taking care of Four.  He
really does care, Four is not just another cat passing through, not just
another account.

Oh, I really feel for you! This is almost what happened to Smudge a couple
of years ago. She was also attacked by two pit bulls and shaken (right in
front of me!). The whole way to the vet, I was terrified she would die en
route. Her injuries turned out to be bad, but not life-threatening. However,
it was a harrowing trip. I'm so sorry Pumpkin didn't make it.

He sounds like a perfect vet and we are sending purrs for him (and
okay if you need some help...won't be a lot but every little helps
with Four's vet bills I can chip in- a lot of people in the UK are
apparently taking advantage of the favourable exchange rates to go to
New York for some Xmas shopping so I'll take advantage for a better
cause)

He sounds like Kylie (yes she's an Aussie) who got this phone call
about a sick cat from a Hoomin at his wits ends and agreed to stay
late to see a cat she had never seen before who wasn't even registered
with her practice then spent an hour with a distressed slave gently
discussing the options until the slave was ready to utter the dreaded
words "We are talking about euthanasia here aren't we?" then (over an
hour after she should have finished for the day) gave me (the slave)
time to sit with Fugazi and say my goodbyes

As a result if you asked me to deal with some vets I've heard of or
crawl over broken glass to see her, I'd be down on all fours okay?
When Isis was showing signs of old age, she even discouraged me from
coming to see her! Isis hated "Outside" to the extent she hid even if
her best friends were at the door until that door was closed. She
hated vets trips so much Kylie said if she wasn't in pain, eating
normally etc- maybe we should weigh up how much taking her to the vet
for what? To be told she was getting on and given the way Isis would
be traumatised by such a visit it might be cruel to her. She said as
long as she was plainly not in pain etc- then wait and see, she said
to be honest a visit might be the last straw (we both suspected her
next trip to the vets would be the last and felt like if we did that
it when she was still alert, eating etc  would feel like we were
putting her down just for being old) and to only bring her in if she
had any symptoms that needed attention- as a result, Isis crossed the
Bridge in her sleep at home just after eating her dinner (she was not
a cat to leave full  food dishes!) and Kylie never charged us for half
a ton of free advice

My latest dread is she is talking about going back to Australia-
Yowie- how much is it to rent a place down there and can I get a
job?!!

Purrs continuing for Four to calm down and accept you.  I wonder if
some Rescue Remedy in his water would help the situation?  If your vet
has an email address we could all send him a thank you email with
purrs for helping you help Four.  Maybe then he'd understand.

I second the suggestion of trying Rescue Remedy. I believe it has worked
for me in the past. You might also want to put a Feliway diffuser in the
room Four is occupying.

If you are concerned that the doctor might be uneasy with receiving a
large number of "thank-you" e-mails, perhaps we could send our messages
for the doctor to you, and you could print them out and deliver them to
the doctor?  He really does sound like a gem.

Charleen,
I think you have a wise vet and this is a good plan.  I'm sure it will
work.  Rosie, who is a former feral, has special purrs for Four to
recovery from his injury and adapt to a loving home.

You have many more than 50 people and their assorted cats pulling for
him.

I'm sure Dr. Mulero will be a believer in the power of purr before
this is over.

Cheers,
Annie

I'm rooting for you and Four and eagerly look for updates every day.
With the power of purr, I know that you'll get him all fixed up and
turned into a spoiled member of your family.  That same power of purr
has helped reunite me with my wayward cat Otis on numerous occasions and
I have great faith in it!

I'll second something that someone else said.  Of course I don't know
Four at all; however, I did have a semi-feral here once and it turned
out that he was really easy to pick up and stick in the cage.  Our
masters hate being picked up and know to resist the cat carrier;
however, this little guy didn't have a clue what a cat carrier was and
was completely surprised at suddenly finding himself locked in.  He
didn't know to try to get away from it.

Who knows - you may be surprised.  Sedatives have had the opposite
effect on many of my cats and it may just be that, once you have him in
and start treatment, that he surprises you with how he adapts.  While I
know its irritating to get unwanted advice, I might also think carefully
about possibly tainting the taste of the food for him with antibiotics.
I haven't met a cat yet who doesn't pick up on the flavour and you'd
hate to turn him off the one thing that keeps him coming back?  You'd
also hate for him not to get consistent reliable doses once you start
the course of the drugs.  Doesn't it do more harm than good to have a
little here and a little there?  Anyway, I hope you catch him soon!

I send the strongest possible purrs from my boys to you and Four for his
eventual treatment and integration into your family.  Thank you for
caring so much for him.

David and I had three cats for many years; Mr. Pumpkin, Aggie Marble, Victor
Velcro. When the situation with Four arose he was referred to as the fourth
cat because I gave him so much time and attention. That eventually became
shortened to Four. He appears to respond to it but as David tells me,
gently, You're usually carrying food for him when he responds to his name,

Tell him there have been studies that show that the frequency of purrs
is one that will help heal bones. So there's scientific proof that purrs
can heal. :)

Your plan sounds good. Patience purrs that you can take things slow
enough with Four. I know I'd be impatient to integrate him into the
family already. Purrs also for the upcoming remodelling - hope the noise
doesn't scare Four too much.

Purrs and positive thoughts for Four to eat his food with the
antibiotics and to get comfortable enough with you to make
