Four Update 3... Thursday pm (GMT)

leopardusweidii@yahoo.co.uk - 13 Dec 2007 21:30 GMT
I know that Charleen won't mind, but now start purring in a major
way!!! I recieved this email from her about an hour ago and then it
occured to me that she didn't have time to post to RPCA to keep
everyone updated as she is out and about today... Four needs all the
purrs he can get. :o)

"He's here!  Four didn't arrive this morning until almost 8:00 which
is late for him. I got him his food and water and slid the Kitty Door
shut behind him as he was eating. He turned and saw what I was doing
as I put the wooden props into place which secure the door from being
opened.  He ran into the Kitty Klubhouse which is on the porch. The KK
is a large creation of David's that he made for the cats to enjoy. It
has rooms and holes and steps and boxes and carpets and pillows and
toys; it even has running water and electricity. It ready does but the
cats don't use either, apparently the former home owners had a hot tub
in that area.

As I am writing this he is sitting on the middle floor of the KK
looking into the office at me through the clear plastic flap, he is
not too happy. I don't see any way for him to get out. The flap is
secured by the 2x4's that Larry put in place and just for extra
security I taped the sides closed.

Hopefully he will finish eating in a while and then I will be able to
move the trap from the porch to the Laundry Room and set it.  His
meals have been set right up beside the trap and he has not shied away
from it in the least bit.

I hope, I hope, I hope this works out the way we planned."

Now for stage 2 of the military strategising!!!!

Good going!  Crazy purrs for things to proceed well.
Charleen Welton - 13 Dec 2007 22:49 GMT
Yes, yes, thank you, thank you!  It's a begining. I can't reach him but he
looks at me as if to say, "Did you really have to do this?"  The answer is
YES. But he doesn't understand of course that it is for his own good.

Thank you very much, Purrs are the glue that keeps this project together.
Hopefully he will be closed into the trap tomorrow morning and off to the
vet. Otherwise we will have to come up with another plan as the Animal
Control
Office requires that the traps be returned to their office Friday afternoon.
Perhaps Four will spend the week-end on the porch at Chez Welton.

Purrs enroute!

Dan
Charleen Welton - 13 Dec 2007 23:00 GMT
Thanks Dan, we need them. It appears that Four is on a hunger strike. He
wouldn't come out and eat any more of his food. I had to remove it because
of ants. My roommate, Larry, and I will charge the trap tonight and I will
put his food, good smelly stuff, into it early in the morning. Hopefully he
will go in, be closed in and be wisked away to see Dr. Mulero. But from our
past experiences with Four and the traps he has never fallen victim to one.
He is a wise young man. We will put those purrs to good use.

Thanks Lee. What had been happening is that Four would come in and gobble
down his food and leave. I would then pick up the dishes hence no ant
problem. The other day I closed him in as he was eating and he went into
hiding mid-meal. I left the food out thinking that he might come back out of
hiding and eat, he didn't but the ants did! I'll do as you suggested in the
future if he is a slow eater.  Thanks.

Purrs coming. I bet he would eat if no one was around.
Charleen Welton - 14 Dec 2007 10:04 GMT
At 4:00 this morning (Friday) I set the trap with nice juicy smelly tuna.
Four hasn't eaten since 8:00 Thursday morning.  He is so very trap wise and
wary.  I wonder what it will take for him to go into to get that food. Will
hunger win or his determination to not enter the trap?  I did give him a few
Kitty Treats yesterday afternoon, it kills me to know that he is hungry!  It
is quiet now and the household is generally quiet, hope your theory works!

Hi Steve, I removed the trap from his sight at the vets instructions. What a
difference. He has eaten everything but the pattern off the bowl. He is
walking around the porch, probably plotting an escape!  He is talking to me
again. Not sure what he is saying but I suspect it is not flattering!  I
consider this progress.

Double portion of success purrs being sent to you from here.   MLB

Double thank you's!  So far Four is hiding in the Kitty Klubhouse and the
invitingly stinky tuna is sitting by itself in the trap.  The poor little
guy must be hungry.  Waiting it out is what we are all doing.  Thank you for

One thought, if he is so trap wary. Maybe you could bring the found
out of the trap until he is eating, then at each feeding move it
closer to the trap. After a few feedings, and moving the bowl closer
to the trap each time, you could place the food in the trap and he'd
go on in after it. This may add a couple days before he can make the
trip to TED, but now that he's inside and semi confined time isn't as
big a factor.

Dewi - 13 Dec 2007 23:28 GMT
If all else fails, you can always resort to putting some sedative into
his food and when he is groggy, nabbing Four and putting him into a
carrier. I can't remember what sedative the vet gave, but it worked a
treat on my crazy tom cats when we moved house. I think it made the
cats high, as they looked quite happy... cross eyed but happy.

Dewi
Charleen Welton - 14 Dec 2007 10:10 GMT
Dewi, that is something that hasn't been discussed before and may be the
answer to the problem, if it is workable in this situation. The only reason
Four needs to go into the trap is for me to have him contained and to
transport him as he is already captured for we don't have any idea how he
will react to being picked up. I will surely talk to the vet about this
great idea.  Thank you very much.

Hooray!!! At least, you've got him where he can't get away. Now
all he has to do is wander into the trap. And at last, I understand
why you needed to do this in stages. He's probably already nervous
because he's realizing he can't leave your porch. So he probably
will be extra-skittish about the trap, so I can see why you need
to just let it sit there innocuously for a few days, before you
can spring it.

Good luck and extra purrs!

Joyce
Charleen Welton - 14 Dec 2007 10:26 GMT
Hey Joyce,  you are right about doing this in stages and Four determines the
pace at which we move along. Currently he is still in the Kitty Klubhouse.
The KK is a structure built by my husband, David, from bits and pieces for
our cats.  It has a ground level with rooms and hiding places, a middle
floor with the Nap Place and a hole for going up and down, a third floor
which is clear, this is the the patio, so to speak for lying about and
checking things out, it also has and up and down hole. Then there is a set
of stairs to the loft. The kitties love it.
Four is in the ground level of course and I can't reach him.  I can see him
and talk to him and he appears to be quite calm.  The trap is set with
inviting tuna in it, he will have to get to it when he wants to or is hungry
enough to.
Thank you for your supporting purrs.  It will all be worthwhile in the end.

Thank you for your good thoughts. I also hope that he will relax somewhat.
He has led a terrible life for three years and has probably been tense that
long.  I love that you said "keep talking to him."  When I first met Four
(don't know his original name) three years ago he was a social cat who used
to visit our neighborhood.  He was a talker. He and I would have these
delightful, if not nonsensical, conversations.  He has a cute way of tilting
his head back and forth while he talks and his eyes are very expressive. It
would be sooooo wonderful if he could become his real self again.  I'll keep
talking to him, he started talking to me about two weeks ago. I was
deleriously happy about that!!

We're anxiously anticipating good news!  It's already good news that
you were able to get him confined to the little house.  He'll be so
much happier and safer with a good home.
Charleen Welton - 14 Dec 2007 20:12 GMT
Safer yes, not happier yet Tak although we're working on that. He took a
swipe at me earlier today when I gently, but guardedly went to pet him.  The
area he is in allows me to see him and he me, I could touch him if he allow
me to. I can do this from a large circlular hole cut in the floor that is
above where he is. There is a tall but narrow opening that he can walk out
also on that floor.Otherwise it is a closed in space and inacessible. One
thing that has come out of this experience is that it is evident that Four
smells bad, phew, he stinks!!  I'm sure it is a combination of the close
quarters, the open wound and his bad breath from not eating for 30 hours. He
has since eaten I'm glad to say.  It will get better.

Wow Tak since I removed the trap three hours ago Four came out of hiding and
has eaten two meals and has walked around the porch.  He has hissed his
disapproved of my actions towards him but all in all things look pretty
good. When he simmers down a little, maybe a week, I'll call the vet and
we'll start the Penicllin which will start the healing process for the wound
on his neck.  Dr. Mulero was recounting to me today how strong Four has to
be to have withstood the massive infection that he had while being emaciated
and homeless. He is tremendously impressed with this pussy cat. I'm thankful
that he is as good as he is, that he is available and that he is so
concerned and caring.  He works part-time because his wife is not well and
because his elderly, female cat has diabetes and isn't well also. He wants
to be home for both of them.  What more can I say about him????

There are special achievement awards given to Veterinarians in
the USA - http://www.avma.org/awards/default.asp
Dr. Mulero sounds like he really deserves some recognition - I
guess some of us could complete a nomination form, provided TED
is a member of AVMA. Charleen, could you check this out? WHEN the
power of purr works its magic on Four, and he is healed, it'd be
a good story to support a nomination.

Matt, what a great idea!  I will do this with pleasure. I will also share
something that he told me and is so sad about. He told me that he would come
to the house to see Four and I told you folks. When we talked about that
last Wednesday he explained to me that he created St. Francis Animal
Hospital.  It was in a store front for many years. He finally got the
funding and built this beautiful, functional, puposeful building for the
care of animals. He realized that he wanted to spend more time with his sick
wife and his ill kitty.  He was buried under administrative work and many,
many hours at the clinic so he sold the hospital to one of the vets who
worked for him. This vet is now the administrator and told Dr. Mulero that
only he (the administrator) will go out on house calls, no other vets are
allowed to do so.  Having the other vet come here would be purposeless.  So
I keep the good doctor updated all the time on what is happening with Four.
I think someday I will invite Dr. Mulero down for a cup of coffee, not a
professional call at all you understand!

Wow Lee, I'm so glad he is finally here too! Hopefully the next step,
getting him into a trap or crate will go smoothly also.  The vet is so good
and anxious to see him.  But that is Step Three, have to get through Step
Two which is getting him to the vet first!! He is such a sweet cat.  I
really hope that when he is able to settle down he will be able to revert
back to the wonderful, magnificent, confident animal that was my friend
three years ago. Four really deserves to be that again.  I'll sure let you
know what is happening.

is Smelly Tuna au jus.  Victor Velcro is a little miffed that "his" porch
has been taken over.  Aggie Marble is doing much better than I expected, may
that continue please Bast!  We are hoping that Four's wound can be taken
care of with antibiotics and that he is otherwise healthy.  Helen Miles vet

I like Christina's idea of getting someone else to play "bad cop", so he
doesn't associate you with being trapped and taken to the vet. Since you
are considering keeping him if all goes well with Aggie Marble, it would
be good to preserve as much of his trust in you as possible. Is that a
possibility?

It was Lee's idea in the first place. I just expanded on it when Charleen
asked what we all thought.

Right.  I think with Dr. M's new plan we may have a way around picking him
up. That is giving him a lot of time with me and if he is comfortble I may
be able to pick him up and if that doesn't work using a seditive.  He is not
to pleased with me right now!

The vet, Dr. Mulero, changed the plan so I am not the real horrible bad guy
any more in that the trap is gone and I am not trying to get him into it. I
am still the bad guy because he is still shut up on the porch though. Also
we will be treating the wound here at home through mediction slipped into
his food. Hopefully the time it takes to heal the wound will give Four and I
a chance to re-establish a trusting relationship. Maybe, just possibility,
by then I can pick him up and crate him for the trip to the vet otherwise
Dr. M. will give me a seditive for him.  Little by little we take steps.

It's good to know everybody was right and Four came back. Purrs now for a
successful capture and treatment of his wounds. Purrs that he decides
Charleen's is his onetruehome.

I hope he wants this to be his new home.  We didn't get off to a very good
start this morning though.  I ws talking to him and he was talking to me. I
put my hand near him and he smelled it. I moved my hand a millimeter more
towards him and got a slash for the effort! No injury to speak of, I'm quick
too.  He is in a place where he is very safe, I can see him and he me, I
could even pat him if he allowed it but I can not pick him up as the angle
of where we are to ech other won't allow it. But that did answer my
question, "Is he ready for me to pick him up?"  The answer is NO."  Maybe at
another time.  He has not come out of his hiding place to eat.  Soon I hope.

Charleen, I think you had a good start. The swiping is to be expected,
you probably moved into his territory a little too quickly. The fact
that he sniffed you and was interested in you is wonderful! Just keep
doing that kind of thing.

What helped me with our last wild one was food. The way to a cat's heart
is through his stomach... I would let him see that I had a treat in my
hand, then throw it to him. He had to know that the hand was giving him
good things. After many days (maybe even a couple of weeks,) I offered
him a piece of chicken a little closer and he took it out of my fingers!
The trust built very quickly after that.

Good luck with Four, I'm glad he has someone who cares about him.

Thanks Rhonda. Helen has told me that the sceret weapon as far as cat food
goes is Kentucky Fried Chicken! I'll get some for him today.  Hopefully
there will be enough for him and us. He is such a nice cat. I'll do as you
suggested as bulding trust is so important for both of us at this point in
our journey. Thanks again.
