Daniel Mahoney - 12 Dec 2007 14:13 GMT Here in Iowa we've had a bit of nasty weather lately. Nancy worked from home yesterday, and around 3:30 she called me at work to tell me that our driveway was nearly impassable. I left work early, and we worked together to shovel the snow and ice off the driveway (we've got to get a snow blower one of these days). After our driveway was done I started on the elderly neighbor's driveway while Nancy did our front sidewalk.
Once we were done there Nancy went into the back yard to shovel the walk between the house and the garage. She left the back door open for kitties, but only Ranger chose to come out with her. While Nancy shoveled snow and chipped ice, Ranger sniffed around the base of the fence and the tree and generally enjoyed himself.
I came out a few minutes later to chip away at some of the heavier ice. When I came out Ranger was walking around the areas where we used to have exposed soil. He would take a few steps, paw at the ground, then cry. Step, paw, cry. Step, paw, cry. I finally figured out that he was trying to find some dirt that he could use as an outdoor litter box. I told him that he was out of luck, the entire yard had 3-4 inches of snow over 1/2' to an inch of ice. He finally went around the corner (even kitties want some privacy), did what he needed to do, then scratched some snow over the top. He then had a major case of the snow zoomies, running all over the yard. I finished my ice chipping about that time, so the Big Snow Cat followed me back into the house.
I guess being a Big Snow Cat takes a lot out of a kitty. After I finished taking off my winter gear and went into the living room I found that he had curled up in my favorite rocking chair, right in the middle of the two blankets I use to keep comfortable. I settled in on the futon and let him sleep.

Mrs Cat (RB) used to sleep on a "human" bed during the day at weekends. I used to avoid using the sucky monster so as not to disturb her :-)

That's an odd concept of music...

That story of shoveling & chipping has made me want a mug of hot chocolate, and also makes me glad that (most of) this has missed us! We had temps in the 60sF yesterday!!!

Hot chocolate doesn`t make sense to me if it`s not cold outside. I love a shot of almond liquour in it. Yummy.
Granby - 12 Dec 2007 18:20 GMT Gadiva caramel chocolate liquor is also good in it!.

It has been exceptionally warm here in southern Finland, too. Just yesterday and today it's been a little below freezing (-3C this morning). But all the snow melted away weeks ago and it doesn't look like we're going to get any more. :(

Doesn't winter in Finland last until, like, June? :) (Sorry, couldn't resist.) But still, there are quite a few months of winter left, at least 2 or 3. How can you tell there won't be any more snow?

Last winter only lasted a couple of weeks in January-February and the rest of the time, it was over freezing temps and rainy. So I'm a bit pessimistic about this winter.

So I'm a bit pessimistic about this winter. Maybe my idea of a south Finland winter is exaggerated, but I've always imagined Scandinavia to have long, dark, very cold winters. Since Helsinki is on the water, that would mitigate some of the harshness of the weather, I guess. But I wonder, also, if global warming is affecting climates closer to the poles more quickly than it is felt in other parts of the globe?

I don't know, but last winter was exceptionally warm here, and it looks like this winter will be the same. But it still is very dark, and not even snow to lighten things up. Oh well, just a few more days, then the days will start to get lighter again.

Granby - 12 Dec 2007 19:18 GMT Dan, with my scooter, she wouldn't go in the snow. I had to shovel her a place where she could see ground. Sometimes that was difficult. When it snowed the other day I did that automatically and could imagine her laughing at me from the Bridge. Silly Gramby, C R S.
