Victor Martinez - 12 Dec 2007 00:12 GMT I just got home and found what looks like a puddle of blood on the kitchen floor, there are solids in it, like if someone barfed it. None of the cats look ill, but somebody did this and I can't tell who!!!
Any ideas how to figure this out without dragging all 7 cats to the emergency vet?

I would have emailed this, but your reply-to isn't valid. No problem. If you suspect it came up with the vomit, was it black or red, if you can tell, that is if it was dried blood it might be hard to tell. One with internal bleeding might have pale gums. You could also call the E vet and ask them what you should look for. I'm sure they have some suggestion other than bringing everyone in.

If it happens again, then you'd only have to eliminate one or two, instead of six.

Victor Martinez - 12 Dec 2007 00:51 GMT Gums look normal. I did remember we have a black light (from when Xoxo had urinary crystals), and I've given them all a good exam to look for traces of blood. None so far, but I did discover cat teeth glow under black light and that tartar deposits look orange!

If the blood was vomited up, it is supposed to look like coffee grains because of the stomach acid. Also look for cuts on them, just in case.

Also look for cuts on them, just in case. I was reading on my vet handbook that if vomit looks bright red, then it's likely bleeding in the esophagus. If it looks like coffee grounds, then it's after the stomach. It was definitely a barf, it had cat hair in it and it was in a puddle. :(

It wasn't grainy, though, just brown and liquid.

None [quoted text clipped - 8 lines] > Send your spam here: u...@ftc.gov > Email me here: pistorLIT...@BOXaustin.rr.com Depending how long you and/or Tom were gone....maybe not enough time for the sick one to clean his face up, so what I;d do is inspect all of them in a good light individually - area around their mouth fur and inside immediate mouth area, since blood as you relate is bright red and not tiny drops. Maybe that way you at least could tell who exactly is illin'....best wishes for success.

None of the cats >look ill, but somebody did this and I can't tell who!!! > > Any ideas how to figure this out without dragging all 7 cats to the > emergency vet? Is there any chance at all that this could have been the remains of a mouse or lizard? Are you sure it was cat hair and not mouse hair? Even if it was cat hair, could it have been part of a mouse that was vomited up along with a hairball? The next thing I would check would be stool, maybe for pine needles (Sammy once ate part of a gilded, straw broom thingie I used to decorate my fireplace wood-holder at Christmas. A pine needle or something else sharp may have scratched the esophogus and caused bleeding when the cat was trying to get it back up again. Blood from the stomach is usually black like coffee grounds, so it sounds like blood from the esophogus, but if it is a scratched esophogus, it could still cause problems making it hard for a cat to eat and then they'll get hepatic lipodosis.
Has everybody eaten - a scratched esophogus would put the cat off his feed.
Sorry, that's all I can think of right now. Purrs on the way that it's nothing serious.
Hugs,

Victor Martinez - 12 Dec 2007 03:06 GMT > Is there any chance at all that this could have been the remains of a mouse > or lizard? Are you sure it was cat hair and not mouse hair? Even if it was Not at all. It was a puddle of red liquid, about 3 tablespoons worth, I guess. When picked up with a paper towel, it most certainly looks like blood.
> Has everybody eaten - a scratched esophogus would put the cat off his feed. Issa took a long time to eat, Tom said he just saw him eat. However, Luna has now barfed twice. Not her usual. Basho also barfed, but that's normal for him, he eats way too much all the time. My prime suspects right now are still Issa and Luna. Our plan was going to be to take Issa to our regular vet in the morning if he didn't eat. But now he's eaten, so we're back to square one. :(

It could be an ulcer (which isn't too hard to treat). I had a cat who threw up blood and that's what caused it.

Victor Martinez - 12 Dec 2007 07:01 GMT We'll, we just got back from the ER with no diagnosis and a few hundred dollar poorer. :( Her x-rays and bloodwork all came out ok. We're supposed to keep an eye on her (and the other cats) to see if we can pinpoint anything out of the ordinary. I'll be calling our regular vet in the morning to get her feedback. Thanks for all the purrs, now we're off to bed, it's way past our bedtime.

Victor Martinez - 12 Dec 2007 14:19 GMT The cats have had breakfast and so far no barfs. I'm going to stay home today to monitor. I also called our regular TED and asked that one of them (our usual isn't working today) give me a call back when they review the tests results from the ER that were faxed this morning. Poor Luna, she had to sit in a cage somewhere in the back of the ER while they performed surgery on a german shepperd puppy and then treated a tiny little puppy with seizures. :(
