Charleen Welton - 11 Dec 2007 22:40 GMT Tuesday, Dec. 11 2007 Success and Failure: At 5:00am I propped open the front door so Victor could go out and come in while I was getting the porch ready for Four to arrive about 7:30. I placed two big stacks of telephone books in front of the flap between the porch and office. I taped the porch door shut so no one would accidently open it and give him an opening to leave in a hurry! I put in place the kitty litter box I had scrubbed and filled with fresh litter. The Hav-A-Hart trap is in place. I went from the porch through the laundry room to the kitchen and there sitting in the middle of the floor was Four! Wow, this is working! I set his food down butted right up to the door of the trap and he was not the least bit uncomfortable. After he finished eating he had a good washing and he wandered around the porch, I thought he was settling down. Foolish me. The next thing I heard was a swooshing noise and I looked into the office to the flap between the office and porch. Four, with his head, pushed 27 pounds of telephone books aside in a wink and was through the house and out the door that was still open for Victor like a flash! What a disappointment.
Larry, our roommate has levered some two by fours into place against the flap. Four should not be able to open it again. I went on the other side and pushed and pushed on it, it is secure. The question now is whether or not he will return. I hope, truly hope so.

I keep hoping and have looked out the window and gone to the door about a hundred times. Maybe he will return for the night time meal. I spoke last week with the lady who was feeding him, Violet, and she agreed that she would not feed him any more hoping to drive him back here. It worked for a week. Let's hope he is real hungry tonight and returns. Please, please keep those purrs coming.

I don't want to leave the my house about the time she gets home as that would be the same time that Four would/could/might be arriving here. I don't want to miss him. I went to the Tractor Supply Store this afternoon (St. Cloud is a cattle raising community) and priced wire cages. I can get a nice big one at a reasonable price. I must be thinking positive!!

So many on the board have shared that it doesn't always happen that way, but that it does happen eventually. I need to be comforted with that information.

Maybe you need to focus on something else for a while? I don't mean that in a snide or sarcastic way at all. But you know that old saying, "A watched pot never boils"? Maybe a watched trap never gets filled. :) Sounds like you might be driving yourself a bit nuts watching and waiting. Go off and do something else, don't think about Four for a while, and maybe you'll come back and be pleasantly surprised. Or, if not, at least you'll have had a pleasant time in the meantime. That's my advice, anyway - not that you asked for any. :)

Charleen Welton - 13 Dec 2007 14:28 GMT Joyce, you were right, I needed to loosen up a bit., quite a bit. I went to bed early and read a cat mystery by a favorite author which relaxed me quite a bit. Everyone here has told me he will come back and I believe you all because of your years of experience and love of cats and innate knowlege of feline behavior. Thank you for caring as much as you do.

I hope the eventuality is that Aggie Marble can adjust to him being here and that this is his forever home. Time will tell and I will be patient.

Charleen Welton - 13 Dec 2007 18:13 GMT Thanks so very much Marina. After all is said and then done I know it will be for the best. I am selfish enough to want to have Four be happy enough here to live with us. But realize that this may not be his Forever Home. Wherever he goes to live there will be one very happy family. He is a wonderful animal and his ability to converse through meows, tilts of the head, eye movements and so on is endearing and how can you not love that cute crooked ear!

Charleen Welton - 13 Dec 2007 18:32 GMT Thanks Marina, we are collecting all the purrs we can get. Victor, a Mir Mir look-a-like, is no longer fased by Four wandering around and coming in and out of the porch to eat. Aggie Marble is still the unknown factor. She is 13 yo, a spayed, overweight, black and silver, short hair tabby. She has issues, nurouses, complexes. Her adjustment to Four will determine if this will be Four's Forever Home. Keep the purrs coming!

Charleen Welton - 12 Dec 2007 12:49 GMT I need that patience, could you please package it and send it along, I'd like the large size please. I hope you win your bet. It is going on 8am as I write this and Four is usually here by now, not yet this morning.
Between Spicey's cute belly and lovely purrs you have got yourself a Superior Cat! More scritches to her for me and let her know they are from me as I certainly can't give them to her myself or I'd lose some fingers!

Charleen Welton - 12 Dec 2007 18:16 GMT Oh Adrian, I so glad to hear you say that. I'm begining to believe it myself. I hope so. With all the peole pulling for him that are he has to return and be captured lovelingly, seen by a wonderful vet, and made well by people who are caring, purring and praying for him. My family is, that includes my adult daughters in greater Boston, as well as my in-laws remotely, all you wonderful caring and understanding people and the one who surprises me the most, Larry, our roommate. Now Larry likes cat okay, he perfers dogs. But Larry is also task orientated. the fact that Four got away and needs to be caught and cared for is viewed by Larry as a challening task. He has 2 x 4's across the window flap that Four got out so he won't get out it again. He has checked the porch over very, very carefully so there is no possiblity of escape (I had already done that 10 times, but that does't count, Larry is on a crusade!) His next project is to wire the Have-A-Hart trap as Joyce suggested. If that doesn't work I'm sure he will get a net and do as was suggest by Bettina. I'm sure Four will return and be taken care of.

I thought it was a great idea. (You're talking about running a string from the trap through the window, so all you have to do is give it a tug to spring it?)

Charleen Welton - 12 Dec 2007 22:09 GMT Sorry Joyce, I thought it was from you. It was Kim. Larry loves it. I'll be so glad when Four is captured, vetted, homed here for a while and then goes to his Forever Home which I hope, hope, hope is here. This all depends on how Aggie Marble is able to adjust to Four in the house. She is 13 years old, a former feral cat and has many issues. She has been on Kity Valium three times in her life. She does not handle change well at all. Some purrs for her please if you have any more to spare.

Charleen Welton - 12 Dec 2007 12:40 GMT Yes Dewi, and I was to!! I'm so concerned that he feels again that another trust has been broken, that he can't trust anyone for anything. I'm hoping he returns today and that I can feed him and make him comfortable on the porch. I was absolutly amazed that he was so powerful or so desperate or the combination of both to move 27 pounds of teelpone books out of the way with one mighty push and get away. I keep looking for him to be on the porch this morning sitting quietly like the gentleman that he is waiting for his breakfast. I'll keep you updated.

Well my old cat Tommy (RB), who was one of those tom cats I mentioned, was trapped and released twice and he still came back for food. I was trying to catch a stray kitten when he wandered on into the trap. Sigh... I guess all you can do is wait. Hopefully he will get hungry enough to return.
Sending purrs and good vibes.

I've had some small experience with very trap-wise kitties and the previous comment about needing a "remote" was right on. Here's how I rigged up my own "remote".
If you look at the trap, there is a hook-like thingy that, if you pull on it, triggers the trap. Even if your trap isn't the same as mine, the general idea should apply. I put the trap where I could see it from inside my apartment through the kitchen window. I tied a string to the hook and stretched it through the window. You want it very tight, so that just a tiny twitch will spring the trap. Too much slack and the kitty will notice it moving and bolt before it springs. Then it's just a matter of baiting it, looking through the window until the kitty is happily wolfing down some prime offerings, giving a short sharp tug on the string and kitty is trapped. Worked like a charm for me several times with several different strays. The key is to have everything set on a hair trigger, so nothing in the trap or the string has to move more than a tiny bit to spring the trap.
Keep us posted and good luck! Bless you for caring enough to go to this much trouble. He is a very lucky kitty, indeed.

Charleen Welton - 12 Dec 2007 18:37 GMT Kim, great, thanks. Four, as Helen explained, is very trap aware and wary. This good information and I put Larry right on it. Charleen Welton - 13 Dec 2007 14:41 GMT Thank you so much Sam. I believe in the power of the purr so he will be back, the question is When? And then hopefully he will have a very good vet report. Both Roxy and Smudge love to knead my breast (left breast only - go figure) with claws extended.
Also, when I hold Roxy over my shoulder, it's always the left shoulder, and she digs her rear claws you-know-where. (I also have a maze of kitty claw scars on the back of my left shoulder.)
Today I had a mammogram - I wonder what the tech thought when she saw all the red scratch marks? :)

Charleen Welton - 12 Dec 2007 13:01 GMT You and your crew have me chuckling and I needed that as I am becoming more and more depressed as time goes by and Four has not returned. But so many of the writers have encouraged me believing that he will return. It may not be today, it may be tomorrow or the next day but he will be back. This morning the stray Thug came by and flipped me the bird as I bid him good-by. He is one of 3 well fed, healthy cats who come by and come into the house and eat our cats food for the sport of it.
