Purrs for Louie and his nervous wife

We do volunteering for Tenth Chance every year at Petsmart, the photos with
Santa thing, and one of the elves got bit.

Seems an exuberant teenage dog, barely out of puppydom, got antsy when Louie
was picking up a stool and gave him a nip. A veterinary nurse (on staff; our
Petsmart now has an onsite vet) and people nurse both said there was no
puncture, the pink we saw was capillaries under the skin burst from a pinch,
plus irritation from a loopy terrycloth-like inside of a thick sweatshirt.
Louie said he got a good look at the dog and saw a current license which
means updated shots.

I of course am a nervous wreck and have no desire to be a $#@*! rabies widow;
i waited too long for him, damn it. Purrs, please; i beg. For Louie and me
both, even though Louie is way more confident than i and has been accusing me
of getting off my course of meds...

Blessed be,
Baha

Purrs for both of you, I'm sure Louie will be fine.

Purrs for your nerves.  I've had my share of doggy nips, and I'm here to
tell the story.

Purrs a'coming for your nerves and for Louie, although from your description
of the bite and the lack of puncture, Louie will be be okay.

Our group did the Santa thing at Petsmart this weekend too, fortunately
without any incidents other than beard rash!

I WAS a mall Santa once, eons ago, for beer money, and i sucked. I got fired
before I could decide whether to get tastes great or less filling: the makeup
and beard made me violently allergic, and the itching and scratching was
deemed most UnSantaly.

Blessed be,
Baha

Purrs and gentle headbutts on the way for you and Louie. It sounds
like he'll be all right. I'm surprised the vet nurse at PetSmart
didn't verify the vaccine status of the dog before they let it leave
the store.

As an update, I learned that the vet staff did verify the status, and Louie
himself checked out a current rabies tag.

Thanks, everyone...as many of you know, overreacting is one of the things I
do best.

Blessed be,
Relieved Baha

Purrs for your nerves and his health. And a wish that some stern older
kitty gives that puppy a (fairly gentle) swipe across the nose for
being such a naughty boy. D*gs are suppposed to DEFEND kitties and
their humans, not to bite them. But puppies have to learn.

All the instances I've read about rabies in your area (*very* few) have been
from bat bites - not a single one from a dog bite.  Also, I think if someone
cares enough about a pet dog to bring him to take a picture with Santa,
they're going to care about keeping him healthy too.

So purrs to calm you nerves, and purrs for Louie even though I don't think
he'll need them.

Awww, don't worry; Louie's absolutely right to be confident.  In the
States, every year, there are only about one or two hoomin deaths from
rabies, and in some years none at all.  These are often from wild
animal bites, never from a licensed puppy at PetSmart that doesn't
even bite hard enough to puncture skin!  Rabid animals are contagious
only at the final stages of rabies when they're really sick, because
before that, the virus is still only in the nerves, not the saliva.  A
rabid contagious animal wouldn't be playful and exuberant.  I'm sure
you'll have Louie for a long time.

What he said. :) I couldn't have said it better.

He will be fine.  There isn't a current outbreak of rabies in your area is
there?  Its unlikely the dog would be there without its shots.

(It isn't even rabies season)

Lots and lots of purrs for the nervous wife anyway.

There's a rabies *season*? I had no idea.

Soothing purrs incoming.

It doesn't sound like there's any risk of rabies.  Medical staff tend
to go overboard on this kind of thing, so if both a vet tech and a
nurse said it wasn't a risk, it wasn't.  They would never take the
liability of saying that if there were any chance whatsoever of rabies
transmission.

Purrs for Louie's nip to be inconsequential and for Baha's nerves to
calm themselves down.  If the license and shots are current, there's
very little to be concerned about (OK, English teachers:  about which to
be concerned).
