Jeanne Hedge - 11 Dec 2007 01:13 GMT Where I'm at in central Indiana we've had little more than rain, but a lot of places to the north and west of us have gotten lots of ice. I heard today that there were something like 500K people without power just in Oklahoma (true? false?) How are you Oklahomans and Iowans and Kansans, and Missouri-ites (Missourians?) doing?

Well, we won't be hearing from the ones without power....
Hope everyone is safe and warm.

Granby - 11 Dec 2007 03:58 GMT St Louis had a big power outage because of ice. Last year I bought a generator just in case. Am on the Ill. Indiana border and they are calling for ice.

Stormmee - 11 Dec 2007 12:35 GMT am in central IL, its cold rainy and freezing, still have power, DH is in St. Louis and says the roads yesterday were fine when he was on them but had been bad due to the cars he saw on the side of the road. My part of South Central Missouri squeaked by with minimal damage: the rain was melting almost as much as it was freezing, so accumulation was not great enough to do much more than make some country roads (and my driveway) treacherous. It's all gone now: it was 47 degrees F when I walked into the kitchen about 5:45 AM.
It has been hard on the cats - most of the time all fifteen of them were inside ... Thursday afternoon through Monday night. Some of them don't take crowding well so there were many chases (hypersonic chases: the cats were far ahead of the sounds of destruction they left in their wake). I'd look where the noise was coming from, but there would be no running cats in sight. There were also some fights. I wasn't able to dump the litter scoopings, so they have been accumulating in buckets - I'm running out of buckets and places to put them.

We're in central Iowa, 30 or 40 miles east of Des Moines. It's not bad here - no power outages in town, but Des Moines metro currently has 1200 homes without power, other outages in Osceola and Knoxville.
When I was leaving the house the back porch looked wet. It was actually icy - maybe 1/2 inch of ice on the porch and porch rail. It's only 6 blocks or so from home to work, and the roads were slick but not impossibly so.
The bad part is that more rain/snow/ice are supposed to move through this morning and afternoon. Fortunately Nancy decided to work from home today (her drive to work is 60 miles).

I'm stuck in the City w/relatives awhile because us former Floridians drive very badly on winter roads when they get like they are now, LOL. Not the Denverites; they plow on at top speed no matta whut....but at least we have power to b**** about it, unlike you poor midwestern folks. Oh, Gawd, do I miss the beaches this time of year!
Granby - 11 Dec 2007 19:18 GMT Today, we started out with ice on everything and in an hour, it was melted and up to 45 degrees!!! Just inside the Ill. Indiana border.

Daniel Mahoney - 14 Dec 2007 13:55 GMT > At times like that, aren't you *so* glad you moved to Iowa? <g> Believe it or not, the only time I start to cuss at the weather is when I have to chip and shovel ice. The snow hasn't bothered me yet, and neither has the cold.
I'm sitting here on the 3rd floor of the Maytag Building looking out an east-facing window, enjoying the rising sun reflecting off ice-encrusted tree limbs. I had no idea that trees and ice could be so beautiful.

I [quoted text clipped - 5 lines] > > ============http://www.jhedge.com There are *still* thousands of folks without power in central OK. We were just lucky and never did lose ours. There have been a dozen or so ice-storm- related deaths; some from traffic accidents, from carbon monoxide poisoning from the misuse of generators, etc. The worst, the saddest; a 32 year old woman in our community, with two very small children and no insurance, went out into her backyard, and a large tree limb fell on her head, breaking her neck and paralyzing her neck-down for the rest of her life. Makes all our little inconveniences seem trivial.

I [quoted text clipped - 27 lines] > > - Show quoted text - No, life has just been so crazy I barely noticed the weather. My father has been in the hospital since Oct. 31, is not doing well still. He has been pretty sick and requiring constant care/transportation since August. I have been in the hospital twice getting two arteries stented, stayed five days this past time and got out last Tues. To round things out, Jamie stopped Orion's chemotherapy because he was losing weight at an alarming rate because of it and was pretty much just suffering. He acts much happier now. He's lost his whiskers though! Today the heat pump quit. I was lucky to get a repairman out very fast. He found the problem right away--there was a snake inside the unit and it had shorted something out. There is a mouse living in my car. Probably because I hadn't started it in over a month and it was getting out of the cold. Definitely a man-job and will have to wait till DH gets a day off. I hope if I ever get alzheimers that 2007 is the first thing I forget. Well, a good thing happened today. I had entered a raffle and got a phone call that I had won a huge, beautiful Christmas tree. Can't wait to go get it. Isn't it weird how the little things can make you stupidly happy??

I'm sorry hemo wasn't working out for Orion. Sometimes I just wish everyone could have a happy life for just a while. I worry about EVERYBODY. :(

I actually thought I had replied to Karen, not posted that drivel. I whine so much lately that *I* am even sick of hearing *myself* talk about it. So I haven't posted much. I hadn't even put up a Christmas tree and had about decided not to, not sent out cards or anything. Now I'm all looking forward to it. It was just a real blessing when I needed it.
