We got Courtney back from the veterinary hospital this afternoon.
She looks weird, with one leg shaved from ankle to hip, and the
shaving going round the base of her tail in a poodle cut. They
couldn't let her out as son as they wanted since she wouldn't pee
for a while after the op.
We're supposed to keep her in one room for two weeks and stop her
jumping and climbing, then keep her in the house for a month.
This is going to be fiendishly difficult with six other cats that
are all used to going outdoors and every room piled full of stuff
going most of the way up to the ceiling.
She's in the bathroom at the moment, but she'll jump in the sink
the first chance she gets. I may make a cage to give her more
space than a basket and still let her be in the same room as her
brother, "father", mother and friends. I let Ollie in to play
with her a bit. She's curled up on a mat by the heater purring.
She had a great time in hospital, fussed over by all the staff.
And lots of drugs. I hope she doesn't want to emulate her
namesake (since she was rather punkish-looking we named her
after Courtney Love) and make a hobby of drug-fueled weekends
in expensive hotels.

I don't know how your finances are, especially no around Christmas, but you
could look into getting a large dog kennel like I got for Archer when he
broke his leg (it was less than $100 at PetsMart). Archer had plenty of
room in there and we kept it in the living room so he could see us and "be
with us". Here's what I'm talking about:

When my cat had back surgery the vet told me I had to keep him from jumping,
climbing stairs, etc. for about a month. When I wasn't home to watch him
(and at night) I kept him in a large dog kennel. I bought mine on ebay for
$40 with $20 shipping for a total of $60.

That's neat, but it gave me the idea of a way to do it differently.
We sleep on a futon platform I made; it's got seven rectangular 2x4
frames supporting lengthwise planks. The space underneath is used
for storage (my LPs and musical instruments). So I've evicted a few
LP boxes and instruments and made a wire mesh door. She has a little
apartment 5 feet by 3 feet. She can see her friends and family all
the time through the mesh and it's easy to let her out at any time
under supervision. (Total cost: 1.24 for two boxes of staples, I had
the mesh and some scrap timber lying around already).
I think she gets about the same floor space Archer did, and the low
ceiling is an advantage, if anything. Maybe I'll give her a little
heater of some sort too, she's feeling the cold with so much fur
shaved off.
Today she managed to nibble my nose with the plastic collar still on.

It sounds like you have a good plan in place and the low ceiling will
keep her from being able to climb too high, if at all. Purrs and
gentle headbutts to Courtney and you.

Wow Jack, you are going to have your hands full. We wish the very best for
healing for the little one and that all goes well as you and your family
care for her.

Aww, sounds like she's healing OK. Hope she gets better quickly!
