Grooming Day

Today was grooming day in the Crews' house, everyone got mani's and pedi's
and a hairstyle - mommy got hurt.

Demi, Jessie, Ozzy and Archer all like to get their manicures and pedicures
and get their hair done, they look forward to the treats afterwards.  Sammy
is a different story....

First, we're talking about almost 20 pounds of pure muscle - vet techs don't
want to go near her without a tranquilizer gun.  And she does... not...
like... having her hair or nails messed with.

I always do the nails first - DUH.  First I go into DH's chest of drawers
and get out a sock.  Then DH and I chase Sammy down and put the sock over
her head.  Then DH holds Sammy down as much as possible (he's a 280 pound
man and he still can't hold her completely still - she is *strong*) while I
clip her claws.  Even though we're practiced in this art after 3.5 years, it
still takes a little while because she has *SO* much hair on her paws and
black nails, it's hard to find the "quick" to make sure I don't hurt her (if
I ever hurt her doing this then that's all she wrote 'cause she'd never let
me do it again).

After we get all 18 claws clipped DH and I sit down, check ourselves over to
make sure we still have all our extremities, curse the groomer who won't
even accept 3 times her normal fee to groom Sammy, and basically regroup.

Now it's time for her brushing which she *really* doesn't like!  Again, DH
braves the teeth of death to grab her and scruff her.  I was luck this time,
I got in about 10 quick strokes with the brush and got this much dead hair
off of her:  http://www.PossiblePlaces.com/Sammy_Hair.jpg as compared to
what I got out of long-haired Demi:
http://www.PossiblePlaces.com/Demi_Hair.jpg.  Of course, in return, I got
this on me:  http://www.PossiblePlaces.com/Scratch1.jpg and
http://www.PossiblePlaces.com/Scratch2.jpg and
http://www.PossiblePlaces.com/Scratch3.jpg.  And she managed to do that with
*clipped claws*!  There are also two puncture wounds in my wrist because she
managed to buck off a 280 pound man and got free for half a second!

Thanks gawd it's another whole week before we have to do this again!

In all of my cat career life, I have never heard about the sock part.  What
does it do for them??  My Maui cat HATES mani's and pedi's!!

Great story, BTW!!!

They can't see where your hands are to bite them!

Seriously, though, it's like "hooding" a horse - it usually makes them
"freeze", and then there's a layer of cloth that the teeth have to go
through before they sink into your hand (I use a *thick* sock).  This does't
mean you don't have to hold them, though, DH still uses his considerable
strength to scruff and hold her also.

Wow!!  I never thought of it..  and this just might work!!  Ever since my
divorce, I have been struggling w/mani's and pedi's.  Two of my babies are
fine w/it, but Maui and Felix turn into terror cats!!  I have been taking
them to TED, but that's expensive!!  `Will try this and report back!!

Thanx CN!!!  :)

My guess would be it "insulates" the groomer from those
sharp teeth!

Yep, makes it harder to get a grip with a sock over her mouth.

Some idiot of h+b saw this story and said I was abusing her, I should take
her to the vet's to have her sedated instead, and that I should give her
away to someone who "cares"  pffffft!

Good grief! Have you considered drugs? Seriously.  Just for that one day
a week, a tablet of Elavil (Amitriptyline) would render her very docile,
and not hurt her physically.  When our Misty was on Elavil daily (for
inappropriate urination), she became very mellow, and if given too much
(until we figured out the right dosage) a zombie.  They are very
inexpensive and the vet's prescription can be filled at any pharmacy. Of
course, your vet would have to figure out the right dosage for her
mighty size, and you would soon know if it's too much or too little.

It would be less stressful for all 3 of you!

No, the clipping and brushing only take 10 minutes and she's a happy camper
5 minutes after we're finished.  I wouldn't want to drug her for the sake of
10 minutes of aggravation for her.

That's interesting. I never thought of this. Not just for clipping their
claws, but for other activities that generally freak the kitties out. For
example, I dread the day I have to take Licky to a vet. Maybe if I had
something that would relax him enough for me to get him into a carrier,
I wouldn't worry that it would be a major trauma for all concerned. Of
course, if he were on drugs, that might influence what the vet thought
of his condition, so it would depend on why I was bringing him in.

I wonder why everyone doesn't give their cats a trank (or antidepressant
pretending to be a trank) when it's time to do something that their cats
hate? Is there a downside to it?

Getting the pill into the cat, I suspect. When Sam needed to be wormed,
I got the TED assistant to do it, even though he's very laid back. When
I think of my experiences getting liquid meds into Mandy (RB), I'm
convinced that trying to get a pill into her to tranquilize her would be
an case of the cure being worse than the problem.

First, pilling Sammy is worse than clipping her claws - she *really* doesn't
like that!  Second, maybe it's because of how I feel about mind/mood
altering drugs for myself, but I don't believe it's ever a good idea to put
something into a cat's system that going to last for *hours* just to save
her a few minutes of aggravation.

The purpose of the sock is similar to when a horse is "hooded", it keeps
them calm.  My vet is the one who first told me about it when I asked him
about a muzzle for a cat.  Unlike muzzling a dog, muzzling a cat doesn't
really help because they still have 4 paws full of weapons.  The sock is
perfectly harmless (I put it over my own mouth and nose and breathed through
it for 5 minutes and it didn't even remotely restrict my breathing), but it
does make a cat freeze for a few minutes.  If Sammy doesn't see the clippers
approaching her claws, it doesn't bother her as much as when she does.

I suppose it depends upon your attitude toward "drugs" in
general.  I think PEOPLE nowadays tend to overmedicate, too,
and would not tranquilize a pet unless it were a case of
genuine emergency.  (But that's just me - the older I get,
the more cautious I am about taking ANY unnecessary
medication - even aspirin or antacids.)

Lori  you want to know a secret of how I avoided getting scratched every day
at the shelter.  I used Kevlar gloves that where skin tight instead of bulk.
They can rip all they want into it but you will never get hurt   the down
side of this is they are costly

I get my a@@ kicked by a 8 pound princess every time.  Her prodactyl claws
grow quick and they curl backwards which is no good.

you wear these together and they ain't going to scratch you again on the
arms total will run you about 30 a pair  a little costly but worth every
cent

omg, I can't even imagine!  Cosmo, Arthur and Jack are so insane when it
comes to claw-trimming, I just don't even try.  They get to ride along
with whoever is going to the vet at the time, just for a claw-trim.  I
usually let them groom themselves (and each other) unless someone really
needs it.  Right now, I'm working on Cosmo.  Every day before feeding, I
just grab the little battery-operated razor, and get one mat.  One mat
at a time . . . .

Wish there was an easier way to groom and trim claws on some of these
guys, like your Sammy and my Cosmo!

Hope you heal up well.
