Yeah I know I know, a dog, but this is one I grew up with.
Jaina was rescued by my mom and my sister from the shelter on the day
she was going to be euthanized. She's a terrier mix with a cute
scruffy look.
We had just adopted Leia six months previously and my dad was furious
because he didn't think we needed another dog.
Well Jaina picked up on my dad's attitude and worked the charm and she
has had him wrapped around her paw for the last 14 years. I love her
very much too. She was always so bouncy everytime I came home to
visit and I remember being in high school and her nudging open my door
to nuzzle my hand to wake me up.
My mom called today and told me that Jaina had been losing weight.
Lab results came back today showing kidney failure.
Damn......
Well she IS fourteen and as I see everyday at work, its bound to
happen sometime and it's always gonna really suck when does.
I reassured my mom that kidney failure doesn't always mean imminent
death, having seen patients in kidney failure live for a few more
years. But it still sucks. And it REALLY sucks when you work in this
field and if happens to one of your own animals and you can't do
anything.
So if you could send purrs for a dog that would be appreciated. I'm
also gonna talk to my bosses to see if they recommend anything.
thanks,
Kristi

Of course! Purrs on the way. It doesn't matter, cat, dog, bird, bunny,
guinea pig, etc. All pets deserve purrs when needed.

Of *course* you can have purrs for a dog. Most of us are animal lovers on
here ;-) and dogs were part of my life for more years that I care to
remember. I adored each and every one of them and still miss them.
Most of mine lived very long lives and ended up with kidney failure. I lost
a couple to cancer and one with heart problems.
It is often possible, IME, to keep them going for quite a long time with
good veterinary supervision and dietary adjustments.
Lots of purrs for Jaina winging their way over the pond.

Of course you can have purrs, Kristi that Jaina lives for a long time
yet. And I vote for Jaina to be an honorary cat so that posting about
her isn't OT.

Kristi, 10 loud streams of purrs coming Jaina's way. If you catch
kidney failure early enough, you're right; they can live several years
with it just fine. I hope that is the case for Jaina.
