Shadow, the semi-feral cat I've been feeding for the last couple of years,
decided to investigate the house this evening. He came in through the cat
flap, had a look round, then went out again. It's good to know that if the
weather gets bad this winter he knows how to get in out of the cold.

That`s wonderful! Into the house. And even through! the cat flap.
Hahh - another one who might choose the warm inside to the cold
outside.
Have you thought about a name to address him yet?

Good luck.

I called him Shadow because he used to hide in the shadows and that what was
put on his records when he was neautered earlier this year. He's about 7
years old now so his tomcat wide head is well developed. I'll try and get
more pictures of him soon.

That`s awesome - Shadow looks nearly exactly like my Benjamin. Who was
a grey chartreux (cartausean?).

And how handsome this black Shadow is. Did I see that right? Has he
golden eyes?

Awww, that is good news. Of course Snoppy and Bagheera have probably
told him yours is a good place to be when it gets cold and wet.

I think if Snoopy had noticed him she would have been most annoyed, she
barely tollerates Baggy and if he gets between her and me she growls at him.

Wow, that's excellent news, Adrian. Purrs that he liked what he saw and
decides to stay.

That is a great step forward. It has taken me 4 years since Boyfie deigned
to come inside before he is happy for me to close the back door so he cannot
make a quick escape.  If I am sitting quietly he will come on my knee, and
last week he put his paw around my neck.
It is a very slow process with these shy ones.
I can now keep him in at night.  At last.  I had to keep the door open 24/7
before or he would panic - and I hoped burglars would not notice. Plus it is
now warmer inside for us all ;-)

Lots of luck with Shadow.

Thanks Tweed, I wonder how long it will be before he decides to come in
again. It's possible he's been in at night before, when the house was quiet,
but he seems quite happy in the summer house where at least it's dry and he
has a draught proof bed.

It was.  He jumped on my knee, kneaded my chest, and lay with his face right
up to mine, looking into my eyes and purring his tiny purr.  When he put his
"arm" round my neck it made me feel quite emotional.
I never thought he would trust me enough to do that.  Whether it will ever
happen again, I don't know but I will never forget it.

Adrian's Shadow has made the first step himself by coming into the house.
One thing I have learnt from having Boyfriend is that these shy ones that
have lived outside cannot be pushed into a relationship with you.  It has to
happen in their own time, if at all.
It may be that Shadow will creep into the house at night or when it is
unoccupied, for a long time, maybe for ever, as he is a much older cat than
Boyfie was when he arrived here and it has taken me 4 years to get to this
stage.  I would still consider that it's good progress to get a 7 y.o. feral
checking the house out even if he never comes inside when a human is there.
One day, maybe..
The first step I did, once Boyfie had ventured a few feet inside the house
for a while was to feed him only one meal a day outside, and make him eat
the other one just inside the kitchen with the door open.  If he didn't, he
did without his dinner.
He is quite a greedy boy so this worked quite well.  Gradually moving his
dinner slightly further into the kitchen over a period of time, and then
doing the same with his breakfast got us to where we are now.
I found that it was very important to make sure he had an escape route to
outside at all times.  Until just recently :-)))
Now you might have expected that he would scratch or bite if I tried to
handle him.  Not so.  He is the gentlest cat in the world.
When I had to pick him up to take him for his snip - after a year or so of
us getting used to each other - he just dangled his feet down and went "oh,
no, oh, no, oh, no..."  No aggression.  The vet also reported that he was "a
perfect gentleman" while he was there.
I love this boy, can you tell?  ;-)

How can you not?? He's wonderful.

And he reminds me a bit of Licky, who also has feral tendencies, in that
he always seems ambivalent about touch, except in certain very specific
situations (at which time, he seems to unambivalently LOVE being petted).

However, when he gets scared, he is also pretty unaggressive, he just
runs off. He doesn't dangle passively if I pick him up - he will squirm
to get down, and then run away, but he doesn't ever hiss or scratch or
bite. I love my gentleman cat, too.

That's wonderful to hear!
