After saying that Miranda isn't interested in any cat toys, I went out
and bought her one of those scratch pads with the ball in a track and a
toy on a spring in the middle. I rubbed the catnip that was included all
over the scratch pad and put it down for the cats, prepared to watch
them ignore it completely.
Wonders never cease! They love it, especially Mir! A few of those
dreaded flashlight pictures again:

Wow! For a cat who "doesn't like anything", Miranda sure looks like she's
having fun.
She's such a pretty girl and Caliban is a very handsome fellow.

And she soon figured out that the toy in the middle isn't fixed to the
pad in any way, you just stick it into a hole in the middle. So she
picks it out and plays with it. When I came home from work, she ran into
the bathroom and soon came back with the toy for me to put back in the
scratcher. She is so smart and so cute. :)

Great shots, too! I don't know what Marina is complaining about using the
flash. The photos are great! I loved the one of Mir peeking :)
Persia recent took up with an old toy. I'd thought she'd lost total
interest in it, but being the catslave I am I just can't throw away toys.
It was literally an old (natural fiber, bristle) bottle brush made to look
like a mouse. It has some felt eyes and ears glued to it and a jingle bell
at the end of it's sisal rope tail. She's ignored it for at least 4 years.
Suddenly I'm hearing "jingle, jingle, jingle!"
At first I thought it was Peaches ringing one of her bell toys. (Lovebirds
love bells!) But no, it was Persia attacking this toy she's showed no
interest in for years. She's attacked it several times in the last few
days, tossing it around and making sure it doesn't act up. LOL She's
getting the zoomies a lot, too. Must be the colder weather.
Mir just found something she likes. Miranda shouldn't be surprised if she
loses interest for a while, then suddenly takes it back up again. :)

I don't like flash because the pics look so flat and unnatural. This is
what Miranda really looks like:

Marina,
It is the funniest thing. Two nights ago I was in the kitchen and DH
in the living room. We were talking and both suddenly heard a strange
noise that we couldn't identify. So we went searching and found
Barnabus in the dining room, where the cat toys are stored, playing
with the exact same toy Miranda is playing with. Maybe she 'ported
over here to get Barnabus to teach her how to play.
Happy purr day, Miranda, with special scritches from me.

Aww, those two definitely have a connection. Scritches greatfully accepted.

I bought one like this back when I first decided to keep Little Bit
and Sammy, and it was completely ignored for years. Then one day I
heard a strange noise under the bed, and when I investigated I found
that Spotty had discovered it where it had been stored. Spot had found
the on switch (seems it cleverly hidden from hoomin eyes) and this is
without doubt her favorite toy. She has long sessions of batting the
ball around, pretending she doesn't know it's there only to punch
several feet on top of it. In fact, I took a video of her playing with
it a couple nights ago. Turned out the video is too dark to view on
the computer, though it looks ok on the cell phone.

Both cats are still playing with it here. Mir has even used the scratch
pad several times. I make sure I tell her what a very good girl she is
every time she scratches it. (Funny - as I was writing this she went
over to it and scratched it again.) She's learned to brace her back feet
against the edge so that it doesn't slide while she gets into the
scratching. She often meatloafs on top of the pad, too.
Caliban flops down on it, pushes the ball, and then when it runs around
the track and hits him in the butt, he goes crazy and bunny-kicks the
whole toy. :P
