What do you give a cat...

... like Miranda, who doesn't like anything? She will be 3 years old on
the 30th, and I'm racking my brain for a birthday present. She doesn't
like treats. She doesn't like fancy cat food. The only thing for cats
that she likes is her complement tablets. but I can't give too many of
those in one day, since they contain some vitamins that are stored in
the body.

She doesn't care much for toys. Her idea of the perfect toy is a piece
of string. Just a plain piece of string. She loves climbing the cat
trees and the wall panel, but I already have three trees inside and one
in the enclosure.

I know she won't care about her birthday, but I would still like to give
her something.

It would have been Frank's 20th birthday on the 27th. I dreamed of him
and Nikki again last night.

Scritches. And belly rubs. And head butts. And cuddles. And
vigorous brushing. What more could a cat possibly want (except,
perhaps, 'nip)?

Plus a nice new bit of hairy (rat-tail-like) string?

HTH

Purrs
Gordon & the FF (3 of whom go mad for string. British readers may well
understand why, during their enthusiastic killing of new hairy string, the
1970's "Goodies" song "String, String, String, String, Everybody loves
String" invariably worms its way thought my head.)

Hairy string - good idea!

Thanks for the tips, but but... Like I said, she doesn't like anything.
:P Skritches? OK, but strictly on her terms. Belly rubs? 'OK, if you
must, but I don't like it. I will endure them only for your sake.'
Brushing? She runs the other way. Head butts? Horror of horrors! That
would bring Meowmie's face much too close to mine (luckily Caliban gives
me more than my fair share of headbutts, so I am not completely starved
of those).

Nip is good. Except Caliban will shove her away from her share. I will
have to shut him in the bathroom while I give her that.

I suspect she would consider shutting him in the bathroom for an hour a
treat in and of itself.

I can hear her thinking,  "l love him, but he sure is pushy"

Hmmm, yes. That's one idea. :) Shut Caliban in the bathroom for an hour.

Holly never liked food treats, either (although she loves to play with
little "mousie" toys).  I once gave her some Pounce, and she proceeded to
play with pieces like toys.  I found one later that was as hard as a hockey
puck, and Holly was batting it around the room.  Duffy is like a little
vacuum cleaner on four legs when it comes to any type of food, but Holly
only wanted her cat food.  Notice that I used the past tense.  I finally
found something that she likes, too, so she doesn't have to just sit there
and watch Duffy eat.  She likes Liv-A-Littles (freeze-dried chicken, salmon,
etc. -- her favorite is chicken).  I still have to be careful because Duffy
will inhale his and then grab Holly's out from under her nose if I don't
watch it, but at least I have a little something that she likes.  I don't
know if they are available in your area.  If they are, it would be worth
trying.

I haven't seen those here, but given that she doesn't eat anything made
for cats - not dry or wet food, no treats - except those complement
tablets I mentioned, I suspect she wouldn't like them. Thanks for the
ideas, though. Nikki also used to reach a little paw under Frank's nose
while he was eating treats, and steal some for herself after hoovering
her own.

I don'tk now. She might like those because they are just dried meat and
she likes meat.

I reallymust try those. I have seen videos of cats going bonkers over
them. It is the cat treat of choice for diabetics but I haven't found
them around here.

Marina,

A couple of thoughts -- would Miranda like the dried Bonito fish flakes --
I've given these to my kitties and they all love them as treats.  I think
I'd give her lots of attention on her b'day with a long playtime with the
string if that's what she loves.  (Does she have any interest in chasing
after a laser light?) If she like to be groomed at all, I'd buy her a nice
kitty brush, too.  Give her lots of scritches from us, too.

I know how much you miss Frank and Nikki -- in our dreams as well as our
waking moments, we can remember and celebrate what wonderful unique souls we
got to share our lives with.

I don't know if we have the same, but I've seen some sort of dried fish
in the pet store. I might try that.  She doesn't like to be groomed. I
don't know if it's because her fur is so very short. Maybe it would
require a special kind of brush. ;)

Special kind of brush got me thinking about those gloves/mitts with the
rubber "bristles" on the palm side. You stroke the animal with the glove
and it removes loose fur. Used to have one of those for my German
Shepherd mix Nera back in the 90's and it did take a lot of loose fur
out of her coat. Nera stayed with my first ex and is RB by now.

I have found that, if I brush Cinders with a brush, she will soon get
bored and walk away.  If I brush her with the glove with the rubber
bristles on the palm, she considers it "petting" and will stick around
much longer, meaning that I am able to brush off a lot more loose hair.

Yeah, dried fish might be the ticket. Here is a video of my friend
breaking up dried salmon for her cats.

Wow, those cats are very, very well behaved. If I even look at The
Drawer (with cat treats) Caliban goes on a mad rampage. He would have
been climbing all over me. Even the calico on the table looked lame
compared to Cali. :P

She is the old lady. 16. She has a very raucous meow!

I had to watch it again with the sound turned up. She does have a very
personal voice. :) But it still boggles me how all those cats just sit
there and wait for their treat. And the fourth cat (Mouse?) didn't even
show up until 3/4 of the video. OK, that would be Miranda. But Caliban
would be in a frenzy, headbutting me and the container and everything in
sight and walking all over me and the couch and the table and generally
being in ten places at the same time. He would never wait so patiently
for his treat. :P

Mouse is the diabetic. She was a feral. If you click the next piture,
Cindy calls it "worth doing the diabetic dance to get this". Due to
hometesting and shots, Mouse is a love now with her hoomans.

Come to think of it, Holly's *favorite* game could be called "attack the
sheets."  I sometimes have to lock her out of the bedroom for a few minutes
just so I can make the bed.  I can't think of anything that would please her
more than for me to spend an inordinate amount of time "making" the bed
(really, tossing and rearranging the sheets) just so she could roll around
on the bed, catch the sheets, and attack with vigor.  Would Miranda like
something like that for her birthday?

I sometimes have dreams about my (RB) kitties, too.  I know how much you
miss them, and you gave them a wonderful life.

Mir used to like that when she was younger, but she hardly helps me make
the bed at all these days. I guess she's taking this 'growing up' thing
too seriously.

Maybe you could convince Mir that it's alright to extend her childhood.
Holly is 12-1/2, and she still loves to play.  Oh, well, we need to let our
furbabies have their own purrsonalities -- just like people.  ;o)

Happy birthday, Mir!

Just spend extra time telling her how pretty she is.

Stretchy string is great fun.  The kind they use in sewing.  Just don't
leave it out where they can chew it up.  Maybe tie a bit of paper on the end
of it.

Well, seeing that you are in a chillier part of the world, a new fleece
blanket or wool sleeping pad would be nice. They go anywhere.  My cats love
that.  A fleece lined box hidey hole would also be nice.  The fleece could
be real or man made (although you may have to watch her around a real one) A
new dish with her name on it.  A fresh tree trunk in her cat enclosure to
give her a bit of the wild side in the safety of her own yard that she can
claw.  Get her some fresh string.  Get her a string that attaches to the top
of a door and has a squeaky mowsie on it. Give her a box with some rustling
tissure paper in it.  Get her a paper bag with her name on it. :-)

Those are the kind of thing she likes. I had a large package delivered a
couple of weeks ago, and the carboard box has been very popular. I
finally had to discard the wrapping paper that came inside the box,
because the cats had spread it all over the floor while they were
playing with it (OK, I stuffed it back into the box a few times, but it
became so ripped and dirty, I eventually threw it out). They had so much
fun, running and diving into the paper and pouncing on each other.

But you did give me an idea. I could get her one of those soft-sided
tent thingies. Nikki used to love hers. Actually, Mir used to love it,
too, but after we moved here, no one paid any attention to it, so I got
rid of it. Maybe a new one would appeal to someone.

bags? that could be fun in a box.

Soncek likes to hide in his little tent and from there he pounces on the
mousie that I dangle in front of him.
Best wishes,

I looked for a cat tent in the pet shop near me, but it didn't have any.
There was one covered bed for d*gs, but the colours were so ugly  didn't
want it in my home ;) and they would have clashed with Mir's beautiful
fur, anyway. Maybe for Yule, I'll go hunt down a better tent.
