Little Chickadees

There's a little band of chickadees bouncing around my tiny back yard at the
moment.  The cats' eyes are popping out of their heads, heh heh heh.

Chickadees are cool little birds.  They are really cute, for one thing:

(we get the black-capped variety),

They hang around all winter.  They are tiny little guys, come in a group and
dart around, yelling CHICKADEE-DEE-DEE, and assorted other whsitles and
yodels, and it is like a cloud of activity--  I imagine when you're in the
middle of a chickadee flock, you feel somewhat like a nucleus of an atom,
surrounded by zooming electrons. ;)  They are also incredibly fearless--
they will come right up to you and check you out, and even sometimes land on
you if you're holding bird seed.  An experienced birder once told me that
it's because they are exceptionally fast and maneuverable-- they are good at
getting away from threats.  That cheekiness is definitely part of their
charm.

And of course, it's an event for the cats.  Nothing entertains the cats like
a flock of chickadees.  They almost get tired of whipping their heads back
and forth-- they don't know where to look.

Aren't they great?!  I get the Carolina chickadees down here; they are
practically identical.

All that zipping around is such fun to watch!  Mine adore the suet feeder.
Unfortunately it's gotten warm again.  I don't put food out for the birds
when it's unseasonably warm.  They can still find it on their own.

Zip, zoom, zowie!  In and out so fast you're not sure you even saw it.  But
you can definitely hear them :)
