Fleagor hadn't been around for a few days.  Last night he was in when I
got home.  When checking him over for ticks and generally grooming him, I
discovered a huge lump on his lower right jaw.

I tried to take him to the vet this morning, but he wouldn't come when
called, so I went to work.  I left work early in hopes he would be around
in the PM so I could take him to a 3:45 vet apointment.  He wasn't, but
eventually he did come through the fence and walked slowly toward me -
usually he scampers whe he's responding to a call.  When he got a few feet
away I could see that the whole front quarter of his right side was wet.

He had an abcess (I guessed that anyway), and it had ruptured.  There was
puss and gore all around the wound.  The vet is keeping him overnight for
minor surgery to clean up the would and drain the rest of the abcess.  Oh,
and he also has a tapeworm - that *I* can treat, but it will have to wait
until he has recovered from the abcess.

Oh dear!  Purrs on the way for the abcess not to have picked up any other
infectious whatevers and be easily treatable.  And purrs for you, too, Ted.

This certainly sounds familiar! Same thing happened to Smudge a few
months ago. Fleagor's sounds a bit worse, and is in a more visible place.
(Smudge's abcess was on her chest, and I didn't notice it until I picked
her up one night and felt what seemed like a golf ball under her skin.)

I think it's a good thing that Fleagor's abcess ruptured, isn't it?
That way, it can drain. (And it certainly seems to have done so.) I'm
glad your vet is on the cautious side and is keeping him overnight.

Purrs for a full and quick recovery!

I don't gross out easily, but some of what I saw while he was being
examined turned my stomach.

I'm used to tapeworms - they are a continual nusiance for cats that eat
out a lot (thye get the worms from their raw mouse meals).

For some reason, the host refuses it - claims it's a duplicate.

Poor ole guy.  I'm sure right now he has no clue how lucky he is to have you
to care for him and to care about him.

Glad to hear the ascess drained - that's the worst part over. I remember
how miserable Frank was when he had an abscessed tooth. Purrs for
Fleagor to feel better soon.
