The Intricate Rules of Grooming

Frank and Nikki used to have a definite 'pecking' order, i.e. grooming
order; several times a day, Nikki would walk up to a sleeping Frank and
assume a position in front of his nose, and he would wake up and
immediately start grooming her. It was as if she ordered him to groom
her, but at the same time, he was obviously in charge of the situation.
He was always the unchallenged but gentle ruler of the household.

With Mir and Cal, it's not so cut-and-dry. Neither one will submit
completely to the other one's grooming. Every evening, while I'm reading
in bed, Mir comes and supervises me from the nightstand for a while,
then she comes to bed and settles by my legs. After I turn out the
lights, Caliban comes stomping into the room, jumps into bed and starts
to groom Mir vigorously. She has fallen asleep already, but drags
herself awake after a while to reciprocate. She will *not* be groomed
into submission, even if she's half unconscious already.

Sometimes, Caliban gives my forehead a thorough wash. I guess since I
don't wash him in return, he thinks he's the boss of me. ;)

And maybe he thinks that means he can get you to give him all the
food he wants. :)

It would seem that Caliban has heard of "brain washing," but his
understanding of method is a bit imprecise.

ROFL! That may be true. It's definitely not as effective as Frank's
mind-melding technique used to be (he would lay on the pillow next to
mine and press his forehead against mine while purring loudly - I could
feel his thoughts transferring to my brain  ;) ).

Sweet Frankie, just the dearest creature.

Chaotic grooming!  Not much mutual grooming goes on around here these days--
Dante wants very much to groom Stinky, but he's never permitted to do it for
very long.   It's pretty much fun, though, having three of the four
occupants of the house all crammed into one bed.  Stinky stays up by my
face, and Dante curls up behind my knees.

In earlier days, grooming was strictly one-way.  Mimi would hold down Stinky
with a paw, and groom him with very much of a
"If-you-know-what's-good-for-you" air.  Stinky submitted graciously, with a
kind of "what the hell" expression.  He was never allowed to groom her.

It's that time of year. I miss him so much.

Mir and Caliban usually sleep in one heap, or they sleep on either side
of my legs, pinning me down under the covers. If I sleep too late in the
morning, Caliban comes up to my head and kneads the pillow and my side.

Mimi was one tough chick. ;)

LOL at the image of Caliban's conception of "brainwashing"!   He's
young yet, though. Maybe he'll figure out a more direct route.

My girls take turns washing each other. With the weather turning
chillier and me being too cheap to turn on the heat yet, I often find
them lying on the bed huddled close together.  It seems to be a very
equitable arrangement for them. Francesca will take a few tongue
swipes, then Nina will wash her mother's face.  Both of them will try
to wash my hands, but almost never try to wash my face. Maybe they
think I keep that clean enough for their standards. =o)
