For 2 reasons:

Veteran's Day.  Here in the US we honor those that have served and protected
us by joining the military. I will be attending some ceremonies locally that
will be bestowing honors on our local heroes. I think everyone should do
this, whether or not they agree with what's happening politically now.  Just
a reminder is a 2 year old commercial

Bam-Bam, Barney & Betty.  They joined our family a whopping 2 years ago.
They were approximately 3-4 weeks old, and Betty bit me!  Didn't break the
skin (she bit a callous on a finger), but those tiny bitty teeth sure did
hurt!  Barney was the first to eat, purr, and luv us unconditionally.  Betty
didn't want to eat the first 24 hours, but hunger finally won over her fear
and she gobbled up what I left for her.  Bam-Bam is *still* striving to be
as big as his big brofur Ernie - I'm sure he'll soon make it!

Awwww, happy annifursury to the Rubbles. I can't believe its been 2
years already. Headbutts and chin scritches to all three. My crew wish
them special treats and toys and a warm sunbeam for napping.

BTW, I didn't mean to ignore this part of your post.  I agree this is
a special day. I usually make sure there is a flag on DH's
grandfather's grave.  No one in my family has served in the military.
My grandfather was too young for WWI, too old for WWII and my father
was too young for WWII although he was a member of a civil service
organization for youth in his city.

My father retired from the Air Force (was stationed in Thailand during the
Korean War).  My brother retired from the Air Force.  My husband was Navy.
My paternal uncle was Army.

My maternal grandfather served in the military during WWII - he was
conscipted into the Nazi Army - until he was injured... then he went to work
for the local power company... and his boss kept him out of jail on more
than one occasion.  I remember one time that he was on his way home from
work, stopped at the local tavern to down a few beers, and an SS officer
came in and started acting like he owned the place...

He started joking around and laughing about how he and his cronies threw
live (Jewish) babies off of trains.  That pissed off my grandfather - he
cared not what religion they were - they were *babies* for
!$%$'s sake!.  He asked them to not talk about that.  SS officer ignored
grandfather and contined along those lines.  Granfather (now fairly stewed)
clobbered SS officer over the head with his rather heavy ceramic beer stein!
Grandfather was duly arrested, and was almost locked away for life (probably
in a concentration camp), except his boss claimed that the power company was
short handed enough as it was (with most all of the able-bodied men away at
the front lines), that they needed him to keep the power going, not only to
the masses, but to keep the factories running....
