Sad News re 3 baby kittens

Hi All,

I wanted to thank everyone who wished me well in handraising the 3 baby
kittens. I'm sorry I may be unable to reply to everyone's kind messages.

The three baby kittens passed away late last night and during the early
hours of this morning. They were doing fine until yesterday morning, eating
well, eliminating, etc. Ginger boy then started going downhill. Mia and I
sat with him for hours trying to help him recover. Shortly after Calico girl
and White boy also started going downhill and all three were gone within
hours.

I spoke to the Vet nurse this morning and she said that there was nothing
else I could have done. The kittens were cold already when she brought them
here. She told me that when the kittens were brought to her on Saturday
morning they were already cold and hadn't eaten for hours. She had them on a
heatpad for about an hour before bringing them to me. She was surprised that
they lived as long as they did.

Mia and I are heartbroken and sad. We did our best to care for them. We took
it in turns to check on them every hour. The only consolation that we have
is that we gave them four days of love and care that they would otherwise
have not had.

Rest In Peace, dear little babies: Ginger Boy, White Boy and Calico Girl -
we had you for only four days but during that time we fell in love with you.
My Romeo and Tiffy will be waiting for you at Rainbow Bridge. Until we meet
again...

Love and hugs,
Your Mamas: Flippy & Mia, and the resident cats:

Flippy, my heart goes out to you.  You did give the babies a safe, comfy
place, and Bast will bless you.

Immensely sad news :(

Condolences.  Hope you can find some small consolation in knowing that you
did everything possible and that the little ones had a nice dose of a warm,
loving and well-fed home before they passed.

It's very difficult to handraise kittens that young if you do not
happen to be a mother cat, Flippy. I'm sure you and Mia gave them the
most devoted care, but the deck was stacked against them, poor
babies.  But bless you and Mia for trying to save their lives.

Oh how sad!  I'm so sorry.  I'll light a candle for them on their way to the
bridge.

I'm so sorry Flippy and Mia.  You did everything humanly possible.  We
sorrow with you.

Oh dear, Flippy, Purrs for you and Mia, you did everything you could.

Last week I had an 8 week old kitten come in one day for vaccines and
two days later she came in all cold and almost lifeless.  We did
everything we could and sent her to the emergency clinic, but she died
on the way there.

I know what it's like to nurse and care for something, and with baby
kittens then can suddenly get sick.  While working at the emergency
clinic the very first animal that crashed and died on me was a 4 week
old kitten so my heart really goes out to you.

That's sad, dear little bits.  I'm glad they knew warmth and care and
love with you.  "In that you do it to the least of these..."

I'm sure you did. And I'm so sorry they didn't make it, and that you and
Mia had to go through this. :(

I also hope that you knew what state they were in before you decided
to take them. I didn't get that sense from your first post, but from
what you've said here, it seems like, honestly, they never had much
of a chance. If you understood that going into it, that's one thing,
but I hate to think of you having false expectations and believing that
they really had a good chance of surviving, if only you did the right
things. Because it really sounds like it would've been a miracle if
they had survived.

Purrs for you and Mia and the 3 babies.

Oh, I'm so sorry, Flippy! But you did the very nest you could for them.
Sounds like the odds were against them from the start. Purrs for your
aching hearts.

I'm so sorry.  I know how heartbroken you have to be.  I've been there.  A
very long time ago, but you never forget.  How something so small and so
slight can still break your heart.

I'm so very sorry to hear that, sadly your story is not uncommon even for
people that have raised orphan kittens for years.

At least they knew some love and care during their ultra-short lives.  And
Adrian is right - even the most seasoned foster-kitten-mom loses a few.
Sarah D, of our local Humane Association, has raised a whopping total of 43
kittens just this year, and there were three that were in a similar
situation as yours (hadn't eaten  in almost a day, were cold when rescued -
she had them for 2-3 days when it all caught up with them and one by one,
they passed.  I cried - she didn't as she had lost kittens before).

I am so, so sorry to read this. Sometimes things just don`t work out
and one feels so damned helpless. It is not comprehensible why
the little ones had to go. They were so well cared for and loved.
Sending purrs for you and Mia.

Dear Flippy,

Thank you for being there when the little ones needed help. I have
helped raise several litters of babies, and I have been lucky if I
save one kib in each litter. Right now, I am taking care of Teddy, a
cute tuxie age 2 months, and Batley, who is 10 weeks old. Both of them
are the only survivor of their respective litters.  Teddy was only
about an hour old when I got him. He weighed about 4 oz then. Right
now, he weighs 2 1/2 lbs. Batley was 5 weeks old, and he had such a
bad URI he couldn't see because his eyes were all stuck shut, and his
nose was all stuffed. He couldn't nurse, and weighed about 6 oz. WAY
underweight. I cleaned out his nose and eyes and he stared at me -
such big eyes! He is so cute! He looked like a tiny fruit bat, hence
the name. It was touch and go for a while, but once he figured out the
bottle meant food he has done very well. He weighs about 24 oz. He had
a bad time last week - didn't want to eat, nose and eyes gooped up
again. Poor baby! I gave him a homeopathic decongestant, and after
about an hour and a half, he came over to me and demanded a bottle.
<G>  Right now, the 2 little ruffians are running around my kitchen,
climbing their crate, and bugging the older cats.  Such a pair! :)

You and Mia did your best, and they felt your love. That is a treasure
some never get to feel.

Take care,
Mishi

I am very sorry to hear that despite all of your hard work, the poor
little kittens were not able to survive the cold and shock they endured
before they came into your care :-(

Purrs are on the way for the tiny kittens, and for you and Mia.

I'm so sorry to hear that the little ones passed over RB.  I'm behind
on my group reading and had just read that you had them.  It was
wonderful of you to care for them.  Ones that little are difficult to
care for and any one of many things can end their lives.  At least it
is good to know that they were warm and cared for during their last
days.  A retired friend of mine bottle feeds kittens.  Sometimes
she can't save them no matter what she does and she has
had years of experience.  I know it breaks her heart, but I tell her
that at least they had a chance.  It just wasn't their time.

Hugs and purrs for your and Mia's broken hearts.
