Oscar update (again) - I think she's on the mend

She's eating the kitten kibble regularly enough that I didn't
force-feed her last night.

I haven't seen her drink water yet, but then again she's getting subQ,
so maybe that's giving her plenty of hydration.  We've been told to
reduce from 100 mL twice a day to 80 mL once a day.

Today is her last dose of antibiotics; good thing, too, as it's
causing her belly to make icky noises and causing her to leave some
nasty litter box presents.  But post-surgery they definitely want us
to finish those.  Last night was her last anti-nausea shot.
She still has plenty of pain meds, which we have reduced from three a
day to two (vet mentioned that they can suppress appetite).

She has abrasions on her belly that indicate she's been licking at the
wound, so the e-collar is back.  (They somehow stitched her up from the
inside, so there are no exposed threads for her to chew on.)  If she
doesn't throw up today (with no more nausea meds), she'll be allowed to
roam the house again.

The vet tells me that 3-4 days after surgery is really the tricky
time, when something something ... I think she said the clots start
breaking down as part of the healing process, but that can go awry.

Interesting point about liver problems (haptic lapidosis) -- my vet
said that it can happen for all sorts of reasons, but most commonly
she sees it when extremely overweight cats stop eating.  The body
turns to fat first, and with so much fat to process, the liver gets
overwhelmed and fails.  While digesting your own muscle to survive
isn't great for most of your body, it's apparently easier on the
liver.  So while she hates to see any cat not eating, she's less
concerned when the cat isn't obese.

I took a vacation day yesterday (Monday) to get a break after this
weekend's marathon of cat care.  I did have to run a few errands, but
Oscar and I got several hours of quality time resting on the bed
together, with me reading, watching DVDs, or napping while she napped
alongside me.  I think that was really important for us after spending
several days where most of our interactions involved me dragging her
out from under the bed and doing awful things to her.

Anyway, thank you to everyone for your purrs and concern.  We're
feeling pretty optimistic right now.  The current theory seems to be
that she was passing a particularly nasty hairball.

Here's an article that goes into more detail on the whole obesity /
liver problem thing

Delighte to hear she is improving.  Yes, and I think it is great that you
got to spend some quiet time with her when you *weren't* being the bad,
medicating Mommy.  Purrs that she continues to heal.

Thank you.  It's always so humbling when she comes to me for comfort
after I've been torturing her like this.

(Okay, probably it's just a textbook case of Stockholm Syndrome ...)

This is excellent news. So it was HL?

No, at least, no one has actually used that term to describe her
situation.  Just severe reaction to irritants (in the form of what was
probably excessive hair) in the digestive tract.  Maybe.  I don't know
if we'll ever know for sure.

Although, the surgeon vet did say the liver was slightly mottled, but
she seemed to think that was a symptom, not a root cause.  We'll get
biopsy info back in a few days; that may tell us more, or not.

Sounds a lot like my mom's Tycho. He has IBD.

I'm so glad to hear Oscar is doing better :-)  It's amazing how much
havoc even a hairball can create.

What a  relief!
We will continue to send lots of purrs and best wishes,
