Marina - 05 Nov 2007 06:24 GMT Last night was the first night when the temps went significantly below freezing this autumn - -5C (23 F). The cats have been out in the enclosure and noticed the temps.
Young as they may be, they both remember the best way to keep warm is to bunch up and tuck all your paws under your tummy. I have two very plump (I don't know how Miranda does it, but she is perfectly round) meatloafs hanging around here and glaring at me for making it so cold.
They had to go out, though, because the Great Tits are back and eating of the suet balls in the apple tree (talk about double entendre - that could be construed as a very dirty sentence ;) ). Naturally, the cats had to supervise.
Signature Marina, Miranda and Caliban. In loving memory of Frank and Nikki.
SantaSteeler - 05 Nov 2007 07:29 GMT Yes we have been below freezing here also. But my fur balls stay inside only. My heat is set at 62 degrees. They all cuddle with me but I cannot sleep for some reason.

Karen - 05 Nov 2007 16:10 GMT Do you know I haven't even turned on my heat yet! I"m afraid it's going to be an awfully warm winter :(

I"m afraid it's > going to be an awfully warm winter :( Either have I. Of course, it never gets as cold here as it does where you are. (Which at the moment, I can't remember, sorry! Aren't you in the Midwest?)
It does get chilly enough for heat in the winter, though, although it hasn't so far this year. So I haven't turned mine on yet either, and as a result I've had almost nonstop cuddles with Roxy whenever I'm in even the slightest bit of an available-looking pose. (I could be sitting on the edge of my bed, and she'll jump up and put a paw up on my belly, asking to be picked up. AWWWW...)
I like to think it's affection, but I know it's mostly heat-seaking behavior. She is awfully sweet about it, though. I mean, purring, kneading, nose rubs and headbutts aren't necessary for getting warm. However, I'm well aware that when it does get cold enough to finally turn on the heat, I will be completely forgotten as she drapes herself over the back of the couch to soak up the heat waves from the baseboard heater.

>turn on the heat, I will be completely forgotten as she drapes herself >over the back of the couch to soak up the heat waves from the baseboard >heater. We've started to turn the heating on a bit and the Fabulous Furballs are back in their bestest and most favourite place in the World. Just in front of our bathroom door...first of all, in the mornings the Sun comes streaming in and this time of year they're soaking up as much Sun as they can get but when the heating comes on it really comes into it's own. It's right next to the hallway radiator with the bathroom radiator being just inside the bathroom door so maybe a foot away and the best bit....
The pipe between the two radiators runs close to the surface under the wooden floorboard with the result that there's a patch of underfloor heating just there! So the pair of them belly flop onto the warm patch, snuggled by the radiator and any Sun that comes through is an added bonus for them!

Even though we are nowhere near as cold as you, Francis has decided that the only place to lurk is directly under any suitable radiator, stretched out, belly-up, with his fur *on* the bottom of the radiator.
Nights have recently become two-cat nights (Waffles + Francis) as opposed on one-cat nights (Waffles only snuggled next to me), which is a sure sign of winter approaching.

We haven't been running the air-conditioning at home, but the days are warm nonetheless. It's rare for it to be so warm yet, and it seems off-kilter somehow. The cats, of course, think it's still summer.

How is dear Francis these days? He's lovely, as ever. But he's missing Nathan. Since Nathan has left home to go to university, Francis has been very possessive of me. If he sees Vernon cuddle me, a black & white boy cat will *demand* to be let in on the action. We have kindly pointed out that no, there are certain things that are specific to species... Plus, if he sees Waffles on my lap or next to me, he gets all very worried and wanders about trying to get her away from me so he can take her place. He's a huge softie/

Here in Michigan it is only 38 with a wind chill in the mid 20s today at 10:30 AM and my furbabies are lined up along the hot water base board heaters. Kitty, the 16 year old likes to lay with her paws stuck under the heater and her belly along the heater.
I just took the trash out and man it is cold!! I might go join them!! :-)

But even so, it's quite a bit cooler than the babies like. Since I was home sick yesterday I left the back door open for the furkids to go outside and play. They'd go outside for a while (usually 15 minutes to half an hour) then come back inside and meatloaf on top of one of the heater vents.
When Nancy got home and sat down in the living room Ranger came up to her immediately, giving her his whining meow. It sounded to me like he was saying "Meowmie, make it warmer outside!" He had tried that with me earlier in the day and was quite upset I hadn't complied with his demand.

I've got the usual nut & seed bird feeding stations out and there's nary a bird in sight. At this time of year the garden is usually heaving with birds.
