My mouth was fine last night, but when I woke up this morning my mouth
was hurting, and it hasn't stopped yet! I'm afraid that the pork
spareribs we ate the other day might have cracked one of my old
fillings or something, or else the stupid dentist damaged something
when she deep-cleaned my teeth two weeks ago... and of course it's
saturday so I can't do anything about it until Monday! I can't even
take ibuprofen for it, because I've just discovered that I've become
allergic to it - it makes my eyes itch insanely and swell up like a
racoon... :(

Does your entire mouth hurt, or does it seem to be a single tooth?  If it is
one area of the mouth, my father used to say that oil of cloves would help a
tooth ache.  It's available at pharmacies, and you just rub it against the
tooth (or teeth).

Incidentally, what is "deep cleaning"?  I have my teeth cleaned by the
dental tech every six months, but I have never heard it called deep
cleaning.  Is that a different process?

Good luck with the tooth.  Fortunately, I never had a toothache, but my dad
used to say that can be a terrible pain.  Also, you might call a pharmacist
and see if you can get a recommendation for an over-the-counter medication
that does not include ibuprofen.  I also need to avoid ibuprofen, so I use
Excedrin for headaches.

Tooth purrs on the way.  Maybe some Anbesol would help (although I've no
idea what's in it).  I don't take ibuprophen; Aleve contains naproxin and
that's what I take for pain (well, I take the store brand but the
ingredients are identical).

Anbesol is a topical anesthetic for tooth/mouth pain that I have found
to be helpful even with root canal pain.

It tastes nasty, and has to be applied every few hours, but it might
help get you through the weekend. I keep it on hand; it doesn't 'go
bad', or lose potency, in my experience.

Toothaches are one of the worst things you can have. There is no
'emergency room' for dental problems!

Purrs on the way.

Another anaesthetic that works very well is benzydamine rinse (sold
as "Difflam" in the UK).  I have also tried lidocaine ointment, which
is related to benzocaine (Anbesol) but in the formulation I have (a
Turkish one intended for use on insect bites) much stronger.  For it
to work you need to apply it along the nerve leading away from the
source of the pain, i.e. look up the neural wiring of your mouth
somewhere.  Benzydamine doesn't need so much precision.

There certainly is in major cities in the UK.  (Out dental service
was Americanized into near oblivion under Thatcher and Blair, but
there are dental hospitals, and most dentists belong to groups that
cooperate to provide emergency cover).

Purrs that you find something to help with the pain.

Karen, hopefully by now you've found something to help with the pain
but we are sending purrs that this isn't something major and that it
can be painlessly repaired.

Thanks Julie... the purrs must have worked because my mouth was fine
when I woke up yesterday morning. It only hurt for one day.

Toothy purrs coming up.  A bit late, I know.  For another time, try
co-codamol, I find it quite effective for pain.

Ugh.  Tooth pain ranks up there as the worst.  Best wishes for
this to pass and not require major work.
