So I'm sitting here the other day, playing Bubbels, with the local news
on in the background.
The announcer's voice suddenly breaks into my consciousness, by
mentioning an intersection in town that just happens to be *mine*. I
look up to see a building that looks a lot like mine, with a *car* in it.
"OMG!!!! WTH!!!!!!"
I go running downstairs, belatedly realizing that, um, I heard no CRASH.
So it can't be us -- can it?
Well, there's no car sticking in our front door, which is good. Cats
are snoozing on the couch, which is even better.
So I grab my cane and jacket and wander outside. And see nothing.
Except a lone helicopter, flying away.
Could I have been misinformed? By the local news -- nahhhhhhhh.
I go up to the cross street mentioned, and look both ways (I was always
taught to "look both ways before crossing"). And don't see a think out
of the ordinary. Shrugging my shoulders, I go back inside.
DH is next door with the neighbors. The phone rings, and he tells me to
look the *other* way.
Oh! It's about a block and a half away from us, not right at the
intersection.
Thanks, local TV news, for nearly giving me a heart attack.

Local TV news did that to my mum!
Saturday night and for some reason the BNP on their way to a football
match got chased off by the police- oh how unreasoable! The police
chasing off neo-Nazi's!
The ended up in a tavern called the "Little Driver" where the landlord
of the time was happy to serve them. Soon the pub was packed with
them, the police were outside and the police were surrounded by news
people in case anything happened
We live opposite the "Little Driver". From our point of view it was a
pain because a couple of friends who had just popped round when they
left the police told them to go back inside so we had company longer
than either side wanted. So we sat looking out over the scene while
Dave wondered if it got out of hand, could we charge a cameraman to
come up and film from our windows, they'd have had an excellent view
Anyway eventually the BNP and the police and the film crews dispersed
the next morning I was sitting in the living room drinking coffee and
the phone rang- it was my mum she'd switched on the local news and the
headline was "BNP invade Bow pub" and she said "Isn't that near where
you live?" and I said "Opposite"
Another earful for moving to a bad area ensued (My mum tended to try
and ignore the fact my dad was born about 5 minutes from where I live)

(shudder). I used to visit Bow occasionally as I had friends there.
It's the kind of place just about nobody would want to visit unless
they were trying to build up a portfolio of Magnum-style photojournalism.
It's a kind of toxic waste dump for English prejudices. I've been in
a pub in the area that may even have been the Little Driver, when I
needed to wait for somebody - it had a stand-up comic with a terrible
toupee delivering neo-Nazi racist jokes who was obviously a regular
act and had the audience lapping it up. I have never seen anything
like that anywhere else, not even when living in the solidly Orange
part of Glasgow that used to be the stamping ground of the Fascist
gangster "King Billy" Fullerton.
I certainly wouldn't let a cat outside there - if it was black or
looked foreign it would get set on fire.

It's improved a lot! There's still a few pockets of prejudice but since the
majority of the population is now Asian its dying a welcome death

That sounds like the Driver...but even that's now cleaned it's act up!

I don't let the cats out because I live on a main road

My goodness! Was the driver hurt? How about anyone in the house? Those
people must be pretty freaked out!
I think if a car crashed into your building, you *would* have heard it,
and maybe even felt it. Still, I can imagine, just hearing your
intersection named on the news would give you a scare!

Whenever I've seen a news report where I've known about things first hand
they've got their facts wrong, sometimes completely wrong.

This is also my experience. I have even seen myself misquoted. Maybe it
is just the "first tier" reporters but they sure don't seem to be the
brightest bulbs on the tree.

When I had a house fire back in 2002, one local TV station showed a brief
clip of the fire, with the statement that the fire had been caused by
stacking boxes too close to the heater. This was about a day before the
fire marshal's report, which was that the fire had been caused by
electrical problems in the wall. Naturally, the TV station did not air a
correction.

I think the funniest incident of this type involved my ex-husband, who
at one time worked for a homeless shelter and was a homeless and
anti-poverty activist.
This absolutely horrible journalist (I had a run-in with her later)
interviewed him, he carefully gave her information and his name, and we
watched the news that night. Up on the screen flashed a stranger, an
elderly African-American man, commenting on the rally. Superimposed
over him was my husband's name.
We laughed until we nearly peed ourselves.

Ain't that the truth!
I've learned to never, ever say out loud "I'm bored". Things tend to
happen if I do! Or even if I don't . . . .
