Hi All

Yes I am very sorry to add to the doom and gloom but Vinnie the elderly black
FIV cat I sponsored has followed too many others recently across the Bridge .
Apparently he developed a very agressive tumour in his mouth but was
comfortable, the day before he died, he enjoyed sunning himself in the garden
and tucked into some prawns but the next day he deteriorated so much that
Joan (his fosterer) took him to the vets to be helped over the Bridge

There must be a queue to get over the Bridge at the moment!

Joan told me I could pick another cat to sponsor at no extra charge but
looking at them I couldn't decide which  of the five FIV cats  to sponsor
next so....I am now sponsoring, Do'Nut, Breezer, Gingha, Peppermint and Rolo!
(It's only 5.00 a year per cat)

I'm very sorry to read about Vinnies passing to the bridge. We will
light a candle for his safe trip.

Poor Vinnie.  I'm glad to read he had a very nice first.

Five cats is quite a handful!  What a generous heart you have.

Ohhh.

Still.  Sponsoring cats is more than I've been doing (unless our vet
bills count as donations ...)

I would love to be saying I have taken all five in- it would mean I
had a huge house and a lot of money! If my lottery numbers come up
tonight...well I've always said I'd move somewhere with room for more
cats maybe even start my own shelter except of course, I would
probably fall in love with them all and refuse to rehome them,

Funnily enough this happened to a friend of Dave's in Canada, he loved
animals so much he started to run a pet shop thinking this would
satisfy his love for animals and give him a decent income. So he took
over this place, a nice well run shop complete with a flat over the
shop. He then realised some of the "stock" he had inherited was
sitting in cages.....

After a night or so he thought if he brought the kittens and puppies
upstairs at night he could socialise them and they would be easier to
sell if they were used to being handled and being in contact with
people...

You can guess where this is going can;'t you? His pet shop now has 2
dogs and 2 cats running around and the others he kept until the ideal
homes (which he checked) came up, sometimes he didn't even charge (one
of the kittens called Sammy stayed until he was 6 years old and had
become very friendly with an elderly couple who came in a lot for
stuff for their old cat.and when they came in to tell him their cat
has crossed the Bridge he simply handed Sammy to them and told them to
take him home if they wanted, which they did, he even gave them the
carrier- he reckons Sammy knew they'd be perfect and was waiting in
the wings, he lives with them now a spoilt beloved and doted on owner)

His business thrives but he won't deal in live animals he'd adopt them
all!

> What a heart-warming story! Dave's friend is a wonderful person.

He says he's a complete softie! He just couldn't bear to sit in a warm
flat while the "stock" were sitting in cold cages so yeah he thought a
little socialisation and training might make the "stock" more
saleable....who was he trying to kid?

He still uses a couple of the cages through because he's become the
local guy for orphaned or unwanted dogs and cats. Last time we heard
as well as his own pets he had a stray dog with a broken leg in one
cage and an unwanted cat with her kittens in another but of course
both upstairs in the warm

The nice thing is he gets a living out of it because he knows so much
about various animals that everyone comes to him for advice and he
also is responsible for several successful rehomes and helps local
fosterers be put in touch with people wanting cats etc. He can do the
initial assessment and let the fosterer know if he thinks he's found a
good match and he's rarely wrong.

It probably helps that this is the only pet shop in town but he
reckons it's just good business practice- he gets a cat/dog whatever
(He rehomed an iguana) into a loving home  then the slaves will be
coming back time and time again for food, toys etc

Yeah right I'm fooled!

Oh dear, not another one :(

My monitor's been misty every day for weeks...

Vinnie was a lovely boy & it's good to know he enjoyed his prawn treat
before passing.

> Vinnie was a lovely boy & it's good to know he enjoyed his prawn treat

Now this is weird- Vinnie's distingushing feature if you remember was
his love of prawns. Now loving prawns is quite a comon cat attribute-
Fugazi and Isis could make making a prawn salad or sandwich a
minefield. Many mornings, I woke with that odd mixture of happiness
and fear that meant I'd treated myself to some prawns for my sandwich
at work (happiness- I love prawns as well!) but to make the sandwich I
would have to fight off the cats (the fear part)

Now Dunzi and Sarsi have never shown any interest whatsoever in prawns
when I fed them some as a treat when they were young they sniffed
them, gave me those "why are you trying to poison me?" looks and that
was the end of the matter. In fact with the exception of ham they're
not keen on Hoomin food

So last night, 24 hours after I got the news about Vinnie, we had a
Chinese as we normally do on a Friday (The week I have had I wanted to
celebrate the weekend!) and we had the house special rice (Wasn't very
good) for a change

Dunzi walked into the living room and jumped up on the arm of the sofa
and suddenly did her wide eyed cute look complete with the extra cute
head tilt as Dave was about to eat something. As the fork got nearer
his mouth, she gave that silent mew and her paw reached out. Plainly
what Dave was about to eat was what she wanted and this is a cat who
rarely begs (Sarsi never begs, she just looks at you in a way that
makes it clear "Eat that and face my wrath!")

You've guessed it, she was begging for a prawn! Dave put the orawn to
one side and gave it to her after he'd eaten. She watched that prawn
the whole time until it was given to her whereupon she devoured it
with enthusiasm, her first prawn!

Is the ghost of Vinnie telling her something?

Weird....still with cats you get used to weird

Hmm, I think it may be an age thing: none of my "boys" would touch a fresh
prawn with a barge-pole when they were young, but by 2 years old they were
making it clear that they needed their (lion's) share.

Dunzi's 4 and has never shown any interest in prawns at all until
now..drat! I'll never be able to make a prawn salad or sandwich in
peace again!

I'm sorry to hear this! :( But it's not a big surprise, because he's been
ill for quite some time. It was wonderful of you to sponsor him, and for
Joan to foster (and spoil) him. I'm glad he had some nice moments in his
life before passing on.

No kidding! I'm going to give mine a stern lecture about not even
*thinking* about going near that queue.

the journey.

Yeah, but the best sort of parties have long queues to get in. Can you
imagine hte party up there at the moment - it must Rock!

I was very good of you to help out a kitty in need.

Sadly, an elderly FIV cat has about zero chance of being adopted.

But it sounds like he had a very good life (prawns!) at his foster home.

I am glad that he lived to be an 'elderly cat', not always the case with
FIV cats :-(

I'm also glad that he did not suffer long, and the decision when 'his
time' came was an easy one for his foster Mom, Joan.

Purrs for Vinnie to have an easy trip to the bridge, and for Joan, who
must be very upset at the loss of Vinnie.

Sadly, there are many new arrivals at the Bridge for Vinnie to play
with, as well as the many long term RB kitties we all mourn.

> Sadly, an elderly FIV cat has about zero chance of being adopted.

Apprently he had been the adored pet of an old lady until he was 14-15
and she died and the fosterer took him in

> But it sounds like he had a very good life (prawns!) at his foster home.

He had a garden to lie in (fenced off so he couldn't get out), prawns,
a bed (theirs he claimed it for himself in the day) and I suspect a
lot of love from Joan who after all had him for just short of 4 years

> I am glad that he lived to be an 'elderly cat', not always the case with

He was either almost 18 or almost 19 when he crossed the Bridge so for
an FIV cat he had a good innings- I will mention him if anyone says
they couldn't take on an FIV cat because they might die young

(When I am older I plan to adopt older cats (If Bast will let me-She
has a way of sending cats to me!) and would have no problem with an
FIV cat- when we were catless we very nearly did adopt an FIV cat but
this woman I worked with had a stray with some unexpected kittens that
if she couldn't home them were going to a pet shop)

The poor fella! He went into his retirement after doing the stuff he loved
though, and must have known you were there to help love him and take are care
of him. He'll be healthy there in the Elysian Plains though, and I'm sure
there will be some fresh prawns for the catching. Purring for you and Joan...

Blessed be,
