Dear Friend,

Once every five years or so, Congress considers the Farm Bill,

which means we have a rare opportunity to pass animal welfare

legislation as part of this large package. I hope you will join

me in helping to protect pets by asking your U.S. Senators today

the Akaka amendment on Class B Dealers to the Farm Bill. It will

only take a minute to take action. Here is the link:

Why do I need to support the farm bill to protect animals?

I also do not totally support the idea of this bill.  I want to protect
animals against being used in research unless there is a very clear need
for in vivo testing perhaps as decided by some kind of ethics board.
Animals should only be used in research aimed at saving life.  In
addition I want animals who MUST be used in this fashion to be treated
like humans would be in so far as pain and discomfort control (physical
and mental) are concerned.  I am not convinced making illegal things more
illegal will help much.  I think reducing how often animals can be used
is a better approach.

That probably won't happen in the USA.  They are currently so restricted
now...

What they are trying to do is *limit* where they get their animals.
Currently, a 'class b" dealer gets the animals from who knows where -
shelters, your neighbor's (or *your*) back yard, free to good home ads,
etc., etc..

I just hate the way bills get connected to each other.  As far as the
basic idea, I do understand; many years ago my sister who lives on the
other side of the country lost a beloved cat.  As you can imagine she was
heartbroken and all I could think of was did she end up in a lab
somewhere.  It really made me sick to think of it.

I would just like to see a real policy regarding how animals are treated.
I agree it wont happen right now and I appreciate my ideas are not always
"everyones" ideas.

Andy
