Silly question of the decade

My friend, Hugh, is a reasonably intelligent guy, interesting to talk
you, funny, who knows his status in life as a catslave (currently to
Chloe and Tigger) and he just called me up and asked me the silliest
question of the decade

About midnight last night, he was walking home and was somewhat
surprised to see a kitten in the middle of the road. Kitten seemed
friendly enough but Hugh was concerned that a kitten was out alone in
the road, in the cold. So he looked round and no-one seemed to be
looking for a kitten, There was only one flat with an open window so
he called out and after a few minutes someone shouted down "We don't
have no f***ing cat!" and slammed the window shut.

So Hugh picked the kitten up and took her home and he called me to ask
if I thought he'd done the right thing! I had to resist the urge to
say "Certainly not you should have left where she was so you could see
her dead in the gutter the next morning!"

Anyway kitten is we think about 3-4 months old (her eyes are brown but
there's still a tiny hint of blue) largely white with tortie patches,
black socks and a black bandit mask around the eyes, She wasn't
collared and Hugh said he didn't think she was chipped to which the
answer was "You can't tell by looking at her". She's got a medium
length coat, she looked reasonably well groomed but a bit on the thin
side through it could just be that she is a small kitten who will grow
into a small cat

He fed her some IAMS, which she ate with enthusiasm. Tigger seems
quite happy to have someone else to play with but Chloe is being a bit
of a drama queen through it's mostly fluffing up (Impressive as Chloe
is a large long hair!) and walking off with her nose in the air
whenever kitten is near. She slept wrapped around Hugh's neck until he
moved her by making a little nest in his duvet, which she then settled
down in with her legs in the air and went to sleep for all of 20
minutes before getting up and going to his flatmate's bedroom to trash
the computer desk (luckily Mark is also a good slave). Oh and she
ambushes people on the stairs....in other wordd she's a kitten!

Anyway Hugh has asked at the vet's, GP's and the local cafe if anyone
has mentioned losing a kitten. He plans to put posters up (without a
photo). If not, he tells me, there's a friend who might take her in,
the vet receptionist at their vets rehomes cats and would be sure to
check out she got a good home and she wouldn't be put to sleep,..and
anyway Hugh tells me he really can't afford another cat, he didn't
want a kitten (to which I replied "Yeah but nobody told the kitten she
seems to have picked you") but ends with...."I'll probably keep her"

Yeah alright, Hugh, if her slaves aren't found (and what were they
thinking of letting a cat that young out anyway!), I don't think
there's a probably involved..........

She sounds adorable. I hope she finds a good home soon, whether with Hugh
or with someone else.

Yup.  He's a goner.  He'll probably be broken hearted if the slaves do show
up.

Its entirely possible that she got out without being let out.  Cats have a
way of doing that.

Yes, they do.  But the question about whether or not to pick the young cat
up from the middle of the road in the middle of the night is a silly one.
He doesn't have to keep the cat.  My (rehomed) rescue "Spotty" would
probably be a flat spot on the road if I hadn't brought him in out of the
pouring rain where he was running under cars in the parking lot to try to
stay dry.  He took the right action.

He knew he had been had when he took her home!  Yepper, sitting in the
middle of the road at night would really have been the perfect place for
her.  Why do they pretend to be so dumb, he knew better all along. Men!!!

Good on ya, Hugh.  What's he going to name him/her?

The plot thickens....Mark, his flatmate says "we can't keep her- we can'r
have another cat". Hugh in the meantime has made the all-time big mistake and
named her...because of her face he's called her Bandit

Hugh's only concern is at the moment, money is tight and he'll need to get
her vetted so I said if it's really tight then I can lent him some money
until payday or whatever as long as it doesn't run into thousands

Hugh just called- he got home last night to find Tigger, Chloe and Bandit
(who might now be called Minnie the Minx) sitting together in the living room.
If she gets too out of hand either of the older cats will hiss and bap her
but Chloe has stopped fluffing up when she's in the same room. She's now
making friendly advances to Mark who is now saying he's uncertain as to
whether or not they keep her if she isn't claimed....but Hugh thinks he will
come round

She's also demonstrated that she knows what her litter box is for but she is
ravenously hungry eating her food , Hugh thinks perhaps she hasn't had a meal
in a few days possibly she's lost but she was only 20yards from a motorway
when he found her so it's a good thing he came along

It sounds like Hugh and Mark are now owned by three cats. :-)

I've heard many people here say one more cat won't break the bank (except,
of course, possible vet bills).  I suppose that's true, assuming the bank
isn't already broken!  LOL  If his cats are already so quickly accepting of
her I'd say it's probably a done deal even if he hasn't specifically said
so. ;)

It certainly sounds that way. If Mark has gone from "no way" to "uncertain",
then that's progress. :)

Just had a call from Hugh- Mark took kitten to the vets this morning.

We thought she was 3-4 months old, vet says nope, she's 3 months tops
but he reckons two and half months is more likely maybe even only two
months! She passed her blood tests for nastys but is covered in fleas
(Hugh knew that he's been itching since she started to sleep with him)
and seriously loaded with worms. So Mark paid the vet (very
reasonable) and mentioned he wasn't sure they were keeping her and
asked the receptionist what she'd suggest- and she said she wouldn't
be putting up lost cat posters because if someone "could lose a kitten
that small and apparently not go looking then they didn't deserve a
cat anyway" Also the fleas and worms suggest even if she had a home
before it wasn't a good one.

Mark is one of those people whose bark is a lot worse than his bite so
when he got back from the vets he said that hw'd pay half the vet bill
for that morning...oh and keeping her? Go on then I suppose you're
going to I'm okay with that (she'd worked on him as well).

They have called her Bandit and she is now sitting in their living
room of her forever home giving the kitten glare of death for having
to go to the vets

Nice to have a happy ending after the month this list has had

Did you mention to them, if Bandit has brought fleas in the other two will
need to be treated as well?

As Chloe and Tigger do sometimes go out (They have access via a LARGE
cat flap- I kid you not one of them could crush both my two just by
sitting on them- they really are not fat just big boned- there must be
a lot of Maine Coone in there somewhere) Hugh doses them with
Advantage (or Frontline) on a regular basis

She has yet to find out just how lucky she is! And she is lucky.
Hooray for Hugh - and for Mark, too, for coming around. Nice indeed
to hear about a happy ending.

I think I have sussed out how she came to be there on Wednesday night

Imagine the scene- 11.30pm Wednesday the 24th of October and just a
few yards from the A13 voices:

"Mum! Mum! Are we there yet?!"
"Mum! Mum! Wanna go toilet!"
"Mum! Are we THERE yet?"

Then "Be quiet- all of you!"

A youngish female cat emerges from the bushes and looks round then
addresses the bush "Stay there!"

(Sullen voice) "Don't wanna- wanna come out and see!"
(Timid voice) "It's so noisy"
(Yawning) "Mum I'm sooo tired"

The female rolls her eyes "There;s a lot to be said for spaying- now
listen you lot!"

Three little heads peer at her then one says "Mum- what's spaying?"

Female cat looks embarrased "It's...when you can't have kittens...you
know birds and bees and that stuff"

"I nearly caught a bird once!"

Female cat: "No you didn't which is why we're here...I should have
never listened to your respective fathers (sighs) but the trouble is
when the urge comes what's an unneutered queen to do? (sighs) anyway
this is winter- this is cold you understand cold?"

(muttering from hedge) "Yes we do mum...we're all freezing now- we
wanna huddle!"

"Huddle up if you want to while I talk-you might as well be as warm as
you can ...Thing is when it's winter and it's cold then it's hard to
find food. Mousies and ratties.."

(interuption) "An' I nearly caught a mousie once"

(Sigh) "You've NEARLY caught everything once! Ten out of ten for
effort..one day you will be a great killer of mice and rats but you
need some practice! Anyway....not only is it cold and there's not a
lot of mousies and ratties about but even Hoomins aren't out much"

(Sullen) "Huh Hoomins!"

(Sighs) "an' what have I told you all about Hoomins?"

(Three voices) "That not all of them are bad!"

"Exactly which is why I am doing this (sighs) I would have liked to
keep you with me a little longer but the weather is getting cold and
apart from the ratties and mice the Hoomins aren't  out so much"

(Sullen) "huh Hoomins!"

"I am not choosing you tonight! you and I my little Tom are going to
have words before I do! If I hadn't begged food from kind Hoomins when
I was expecting all of you....Let's not have a discussion about that
because if all goes to plan none of you will have to worry about it!
Anyway I carried the three of you (pauses to wipe eyes) an' there was
five of you but two of you crossed the Bridge because they was small
because I was wasn't gettin' enough to eat an' they were weak. Anyway
when I was expecting you...."

(mutter) "Expecting us to do what?"

"In Your case, my little Tom, the worse you can....anyway, if I hadn't
managed to beg scraps as well as get mousies and ratties,,,,and bugs"

(Laughter) "Mum you ate bugs?! UGH!"

"When you is hungry  you eat anything an' bugs is pretty easy to catch
(sarcastically) even you, little Tom can do that! (sighs) anyway what
I am sayin' is winter is comin' and that's when it's all us cats for
ourselves if we don't have slaves..Used to have slaves once (sadly)
little boy was nice but when I grew up and stopped bein' cute...I
think I was still cute but the bigger Hoomins didn't wanna feed me no
more an' they put me in the car thing and took me a long way an' left
me there....then when I was with you lot I thought I'd found new
slaves but when they saw I was expecting they threw things at me so I
left them- they didn't deserve me....(musing) maybe one day I find
proper slaves an' always be warm and not hungry...so here I am with
the big cold startin' an' I gonna find it hard enough to keep me let
alone you from the Bridge 'cos there;s not much food an' there's still
them Hoomins who want to throw things at us and the cars....so last
night I says a special prayer to Bast askin' her what I should be
doin' for you"

(Timid voice) "An' Bast said what?"

"She guided me here..she tells me soon a Hoomin will come along for
one of you an' give them a forever home- you all know what that is?"

(Various voices) "Where we gets fed all day?" "Where's always warm?"
"Get toys?" "Where a Hoomin looks after us and does what we wants and
even enjoys it?" "Where we gets strokies an skritchies?"

"Good. An'  a little way off there will another place where a Hoomin
will come along- she has told me that much as I love you all an' wanna
keep you a bit longer it is time I saw you all safe forever then maybe
I go and find someone for me if Bast is generous even if not for me
then for you"

Dramatic pause "Okay I gotta choose the one of you what listened
best...answer me this, if a Hoomin were to take you in what's the big
thing you should remember?"

"Gotta be cute?"

"Good answer I taught you cute look but cute don't always just cut it-
an?"

(Timid voice) "An gotta use the box, make no mess an' if there is
other cats in there to get on with them"

"Excellent! A house with other cats is a house with slaves an' the
other owners can tell you what they like 'cos to start with you gotta
act like they's bosses and gradually get 'em used to the idea that an
opposable thumb don't mean they're better for anything but opening
tins of food....I shall leave you here "

"MUM!!"

"Come on..show me the cute look ...That very good now come with
me....the rest of you wait an' watch..little Tom you might wanna learn
from this!"

They walk up the road a short distance then Mum says "Here the hoomin
comes remember what I taught you!"

"Mum- I don't wanna go"

"I know my kitten but it is for the best..look (ducks slightly back
into the bushes) if it don't work an' he don't take you then I am here
but remember if he takes you, he will love you an' feed you an' keep
you warm (sniffs) he snells like a nice Hoomin, has other owners an'
all means he'll have a meal for you an' you ain't tellin' me you ain't
hungry we all are I've come a long way tonight on one mousie an' I
still have to sort your other sisfur out an' your brofur (snorts)
before he does learn nearly catching something don't fill the
belly....the hoomin is coming over..Remember what your meowmie taught
you"

"Using the box is good?"

"That's my girl!"

A few minutes later the queen watches one of her kittens being carried
away by a Hoomin who is already stroking her and saying "What a pretty
girl"

"Okay she's sorted. Come on..We got maybe half an hour before the next
place Bast told me to go an' then we gotta sort you out, little Tom"

I have seen pictures of little Bandit and she is a cutey! After one week at
Hugh's she is already showing signs of running the house with an iron paw and
filling out nicely

A couple of days ago, there was one of those moments when you wish he'd had a
camera handy!

Tigger was in the hallway and Bandit launched herself from halfway up the
stairs and landed on his head- Hugh said it looked like Tigger was wearing a
Davy Crockett hat!

Bandit does have one very odd feature through (yes Hugh phones me
quite a lot with progress reports on  his new owner) - her tail

What made us think she was 3-4 months old was that she doesn't have
the cute little kitten tail (I am a sucker for those! The merest sight
of one gives me outrageous kitten fever). Her tail is longer than her
body at two and a half months old (Average guess)- does this mean
she'll grow up to be a giant cat!

She might be- deflead, dewormed and getting regular meals, she's
filling out quite a lot- still given the other two cats are massive
she might need to grow a bit

small cats with big ears and long tails.

Just thought you'd like to know about this

No-one ever claimed little Bandit so she is now cat number three at
Hugh and Mark's and she's not so little anymore, once wormed she's
filled out nicely and has gained a good few pounds- she's been with
them almost 2 months and no way if her former slaves (if she had any)
tried to claim her would they get her back! She's got the Hoomins
wrapped around her paws

Chloe and Tigger have turned back into kittens with a little one to
remind them what a joy it is to be a hoolikitten!
