I'm Worried About Archer

CatNipped - 23 Oct 2007 14:15 GMT His leg looks OK, a bit raw in spots, but that's not what I'm worried about. I'd told you guys that his first cast was too tight and caused his toes to swell - and they had that on him for *THREE WEEKS* before putting on the second cast (which he wiggled almost out of in four days - scraping his skin raw in the process)! Last night was the first chance I got to actually look at his toes. The swelling has gone down, and he's moving them (he'll stretch them out), but they *look* funny - all dark - and his claws are black where they should be pink (like the blood in the "quick" of his claws turned black. I don't have a "sense of smell" - I don't know why, never did, it takes a very strong odor for me to smell it. But last night Ben said that Archer's foot smelled really bad, he thought it was from it being in a cast for almost four weeks - I'm afraid it's something else (I keep flashing back to Bandit's burned skin turning necrotic).
I just called the vet and, dang it, Dr. French, who signed him out yesterday, isn't in until this afternoon, and Dr. Hilliard wasn't in yesterday when they sent Archer home. The tech gave me the standard "bring him in", but I can't until this afternoon anyway so left a message for Dr. French to call me.
AARRGGHH!!!! I want this to be over with!

I want this to be over with! That does sound worrisome, but maybe it will just be normal post-cast odor. We'll keep our fingers crossed and our kitties purring.
I can sympathize about not having a sense of smell. I don't have one either. We can walk past a rose bush and Nancy will comment on how nice it smells (from 4 feet away), but I won't be able to smell it until I stick my nose into a rosebud. It's awfully inconvenient, and sometimes scary.
Last week we had a plumbing problem - something clogged the sewer line leaving the house, and it backed up a little into the basement. It left a stinky puddle covering about half the basement floor. After the RotoRooter guy left we scrubbed the basement floor with a solution of 1 part bleach in 4 parts water. I could smell a little bit of a chlorine smell, but after just a few minutes my lungs started to spasm. Nancy said the chlorine odor was overpowering, and lungs seemed to agree, but my nose couldn't pick it up.

Best wishes. MLB
CatNipped - 23 Oct 2007 20:22 GMT I just talked to Dr. French and he said he didn't see anything to worry about yesterday when Archer was released, but I could bring him in the afternoon so he could take a look and he won't charge me for the visit.

Matthew - 23 Oct 2007 21:31 GMT Lori I can feel your pain for all the way over here in Florida. many many years ago we had a lets say a very stupid cat; sorry only way to describe him. This cat got burned once by candles well the cat kept going back to open flames after that and trying to sniff the flame. The burns got infected the first time and luckily was able to heal but I know what you are feeling. I hope archer can heal quickly and nothing else happens

I brought Archer in to see Dr. French about his toes and claws being black, and Dr. French fixed it right away - he took his thumbnail and scraped of the dirty goop that the tape had left on Archer's foot from the cast! :O!!!

Lori, better to be worried and "stupid" than shrug it off. You had every reason to worry about a cut off blood flow from a too tight cast (I gathered that was what was worried you). Gangrene was *not* out of the question, you know. I'm happy to find Archer is okay.

Yeah, that's what I was worried about - after what I went through with Bandit, the multiple surgeries to remove the gangrenous tissue, well, I guess I'm gun-shy about stuff like that.

He is now *SO* spoiled - all he wants is to be held and cuddled ,and when he's in my arms purring and DH calls him a suck-up he flashes DH a dirty look and then looks up at me with lovey eyes! LOL - this cat sure knows how to play me. He does that with everyone. When I take him to the vet, all the vet techs make excuses to come into his exam room to give him skritches and let him lick their hands - they nick-named him "loverboy". When he gets scared or is in pain, instead of biting or scratching, he just purrs hard and licks your hand - you can't help but melt!

So this may be a good time for my stupid cat story.
My wife and I had adopted our first kitten, my sweetheart "Fission", about 4 months earlier. We brought her to the vet for a checkup and another round of shots. The next day, she was acting a little odd. Walking all over the house and just kind of looking disturbed. Ok, we were warned that cats may be a little "off" the next day. She didn't seem to be in distress, so we just kept an eye on her. The following morning, she seemed a little more normal. I left for school and my girlfriend (now my wife) went to work. When we got home, Fission was again acting rather restless. Again, she didn't look to be in distress, she was just acting weird. We, again, just kept an eye on her but decided that if she wasn't acting normal by morning, we'd give the vet a call. So, at 11:30 that night, we both woke up to the sound of "EEEEYAAAAOOOOWW" I run into the living room and there's Fission, leaning forward with her head down almost on the floor. "What's the matter, Fiz?"........ "EEEEYAAAAOOOOWW". Now this was sounding, and looking, like a cat in distress. I went over to pet her and she let out a little "Ahoww" and shifted back and forth on her back legs....looking at me with an expression that just said to me "Help me". By that time, I was fully in "crisis mode". With no emergency facilities in the area, I did the only thing I could think of, dialed the number for the vet's office. I got the answering service and was given the standard "Call the vet in the morning" line. But I was in "crisis mode" and I can be VERY persuasive when I'm in "crisis mode". So the service agreed to call the vet. Two minutes later, my wife and I were in trying to comfort Fission when the phone rang. I told the vet, who had obviously just woken up, the story about her getting her shots and the odd behavior afterward. I described how she was acting now. The vet told me to go pick up her tail and look for any vaginal discharge. I did, there was, and I went back to the phone and told the vet "yes".
"She's fine", he said, "She's just going into heat".
I'll bet you don't feel quite so stupid, now. Do you? :)

My friend Rosemary had a pet tortoise (this was back when a lot of kids did, we had one but it ran away!) and this year at the end of hibernation, the tortoise (Timmy) did not wake up. So Rosemary went to her vets, plonked Timmy on the table and in a pure Monty Python moment had to say "Excuse me, is my tortoise dead?"
(Timmy was but how do you tell?)

I heard of a dog owner who tried to treat a tick infestation with something he'd read in a book - apply a lighted cigarette end to each tick. The dog *really* didn't like it. Understandable since the "ticks" were its nipples.

MLB Some years ago, when a co-worker's wife was pregnant, they decided to have an ultrasound done about six weeks before the baby was due. They were examining the photos, and the husband asked, "But what does this line on the ultrasound mean?". The doctor replied, "It means your baby is a girl." The husband thought this was funny enough that he told all of his co-workers about his goof.

Wherever it was coming from, I knew watery blood was not something that SHOULD come from a cat's backside under normal circumstances, so I took her off to the midnight vet. Who then patiently explained to me the difference between a female cat's anal and vaginal openings, and then explained that my adolescent girl was pregnant.
I was both relieved and monumentally embarrassed at the same time. =o)

He's much too skittish to allow me to examine him so closely. So I've just accepted it on faith that he's a boy, because the rescue org that I was fostering for told me that Licky and his littermate (who I also had) were both neutered boys. So I hope they were right. I also haven't had to take him to the vet (I really dread the day), so I don't have confirmation from anyone else.

It was only his foot and his claws that was blackened. It was where the sticky side of the tape on the end of his cast had rubbed off on his foot and claws. I don't know if you've ever had tape residue on something, but it's really hard to get off (nail polish remover is about the only thing I know that will cut it) - and after a while it gets black from all the dirt that sticks to it.
