There was a monkfish tail at the supermarket tonight when I popped in for
some bread quite late, going spare on it's sell-by-date.  Convert the
currency for USA by doubling it.  It cost 7.65 and I got it for 0.50.  My
freezer is full of such bargains and no more room but how could I resist it?

Hmm, now how should I cook it for them?  Poached, baked in foil?
I am particularly happy to get a white fish for KFC, given her kidney
issues.  Fish is really expensive here normally, so I trawl the supermarkets
when they are about to close to see if I can get some for her.

baked in foil   if you don't get the poach just right you will ruin it

Nothing wrong with bargains  I go into the supermarket all the time and get
the meat that is going out of date.  you freeze it still good.  Lamb can be
very expensive here in Florida  about $4 a pound for a cheap cut.  I get a
set on lamb steaks about 2.5 pounds for about $2

I don't consider myself a good cook.   However, if I cook a piece of fish
in the microwave with a small amount of liquid it comes out just fine.
Depending on the size, it takes three or four minutes.  MLB

You peer through the window and notice this crazy southern lady,
sitting in her car gluing pipe cleaners to her cheeks near her nose.
She's wrapped in a black cape and now she's
applying....what?.....ears, cat ears to her head.  But wait, she's
getting out and walking up to Tweed's front door.  She's knealing as
if in prayer and if you listen closely you can hear her say "meow"
"meow".  You shake your head and chuckle as you walk away. You look at
KFC and Boyfie and mutter, "Just another crazy cat lady" <sigh>

BonBon already has one of those costumes up and ready to go complete and
ready with cat's meow. Take her with you. You'll be more convincing.

However you cook it, they will love you for it!

I microwaved it and the smell made me retch and nearly vomit.  Kitty ate
some happily but Boyfie said "No way, are you mad?"  I think it may have
gone too far to be good.
Does anyone know how to get that bad fish smell out of my house?    Blech.
I thought I remembered that boiling up lemon juice would do it.  It didn't.
My house absolutely stinks of bad fish.

try boiling a pot of water with baking soda in it, Lee, hoping this is the
same thing both sides of the pond... the stuff you bake with and brush your
teeth with, Lee

I think I might have some baking soda somewhere in the depths of my
cupboard, thanks for the idea.
That's the very last time I get some monkfish on its sell by date for my
cats.
It stank when I cooked it.  Fish does, though, but it was not OK.
It was so disgusting , the smell from it I nearly threw up.

I had fish smell in general and that just had to be nasty, Lee

Boil some lemon juice in water in the microwave.  That doesn't work try
baking soda.  Leave a saucer of vinegar out to absorb the odor.

Did that.

Must have used it, couldn't find it in the cupboard.

Did that, good idea.

It has taken *days* to get the smell of that monkfish out of my house.  It
was sold as fit for human consumption and it certainly wasn't.
I thought I would be giving Kitty a treat of an expensive white fish we
could not normally afford.  I won't be doing *that* again!
It lurks in a sealed container in the fridge.  I must find time this weekend
to dispose of it, somehow.  I will probably have to bury it in the garden.

Hope Kitty didn't have any bad effects from it! Cat digestive systems
are tougher than ours, but she's not a strapping young thing anymore.

I would complain to the store where you bought it. They should pay
better attention to what they're selling as "edible".

No bad effects for Kitty, she can eat absolutely *anything* no doubt due to
to being a stray for so many years.
Boyfie had the sense to say "you are joking if you expect me to eat this"

I'm considering it. I bought it for my cats, but it was really for humans.
It was not fit for either.  They should have thrown it.

Euch! This is why I hardly give the cats seithe any more. I defrost and
cook it in the microwave, but the smell lingers on and on. And I've
never liked fish, so even though the seithe is fine, the smell is horrid
to me.
