It is a very hard decision, but IMHO better, than cling to him and let

Oh, Vicky, I'm so, so sorry to hear that.  But as long as you live
Schmogg will be there in your heart and you'll feel his love with its
every beat.  I know too well what you're going through now - knowing
he had a long, love-filled life just isn't as comforting as it sounds,
because the longer they're with us the deeper our grief when they're
gone.

Just hang in there - they tell me there will be a time that you can
remember your fur-baby with a smile instead of tears.  I'm taking that
on faith.

((((((((((((((((Yowie))))))))))))))))))

I don't have parentheses enough for the hug I want to send you. Nor words
enough to tell how sorry i am for the loss of a venerable and beloved member
of your family.

Shmogg looked out for you and watched over you, and has simply gone into
retirement for a time. In the snowy region where I live we'd say it was like
going to Florida: he's where the weather is always sunny, the breezes cool
and there is rest and reward for the time he was here giving you all the
kitty-love he had in him. He awaits you as he rests from his labor of love,
and will be the first to welcome you someday, because he will thank you for
your own love and mercy, and the courage it took to take away his suffering.

Life is energy and energy cannot be destroyed, only changed; and Shmogg lives.

Preparing a candle to light blessings for you all,
Baha

The first story that showed his sense of humour: Surfing Cat (written in
April, 1998)

Shmoggleberry lived in a pokey 2 bedroom flat for most of his life, and so
took great advantage of all the extra space to run around in when we moved
to a large house.
The main bedroom, lounge, dining room and kitchen are all reasonably lined
up, so Shmoggleberry could run full speed from one to the other. He can
really get up some speed! (Since the flat was small, he couldn't really get
a decent run without having to make some very sharp, speed reducing, turns)
The Kitchen has a lino floor, and since it was winter when I moved, I put
some small mats down in the kitchen so I didn't get cold feet. He very
quickly discovered that if he got some speed up and then jumped onto the mat
at the start of the kitchen, his momentum would allow him to "surf" across
the lino, using the mat as a board.

At one point, he got up to much speed, he discovered a law of
thermodynamics: once you are moving, its hard to stop! THUNK! head first
into the far wall of the kitchen. He let out a rather surprised "OW!" (as
you would) and stopped to give himself a good grooming - which he always
does when he's done something stupid. I thought he'd learnt his lesson by
getting a fairly good smack in the head.

Alas, at some hideous hour of the morning, we were woken to the sounds of
boomba, boomba, boomba (sound of cat hurtling through empty house,
approaching speed of light), sweeeeeeeeeee..... (sound of mat sliding on
lino) ....THUNK (sound of insane fluffy projectile being suddenly stopped by
unforgiving wall). We had just managed to doze off, when - Boomba boomba
boomba, sweee..., thunk. (just enough time to go back to sleep) boomba,
boomba, boomba, sweeee..., thunk. (enough time..) boomba, boomba... etc.

I caught him at it later the next day - he came screaming out of the
bedroom, landed on the mat, and then put his head down so the wall would
collect him on the flat bit between his ears. Almost like he was a charging
bull. I guess it caused him the least amount of pain.

Although I know El Moggo is probably the most cunning & conniving creature
I've met, I also know he can be remarkably thick.

~~~
There are other stories, yet to be written, but not at the moment. My words
haven't come back yet.
The Yowlet really hasn't said anything - he's been a bit harder to wrangle
than usual, perhaps thats because of Shmogg, perhaps its just a coincidence,
or perhaps its simply because I'm feeling emotionally drained and don't have
as much patience as I usually do.
The one thing I am really thankful for is digital cameras - we have lots and
lots of photos of Shmogg. If he does ask, we have photos to show him, even a
photo or two of him & Shmogg together.
This earring (see other thread 'Perhaps I'm Mad') has really helped me not
feel so damn empty, I think if I get some time I'll be able to write again
now.
This gives new meaning to the phrase "the cat sat on the mat". :)
How old was he when he did this?
Great story - I missed it the first time (since I joined this ng in
Oh goodness, ages ago - 5 houses/flats ago. It was '96 or '97, so that made
him 5 or 6 give or take.
I should gather them together in a book and donate the proceeds to the
RSPCA. I'm waiting for hte 'round tuit' for that, though.
OK, now I\'m both crying AND laughing. Harmony (RB) once tobogganed off a
stack of newspapers repeatedly, until the \"stack\" was level with the
floor and its contents were spread over the entire front of the living
room. She and Shmogg can have sled races, to determine the merits of
sliding on floor mats vs. sliding on sheets of newspaper. ;o)
Thanks for sharing.
I think I've been reading Shmoggleberry stories ever since I first found
I have lit a candle for Schmogg in my very special glass candle holder
I'm late to this as I've been offline. But please know that he & you
and his grieving family are in our thoughts and prayers. We'll light a
candle for his journey.
I am so sorry, I have only just seen this.   I know how much you loved him
and how sad you must be.  We will all have him in our memories because of
the wonderful stories you told us about him.
I'm so very, very sorry. I've been following Shmogg's adventures for years
now; he was a wonderful cat.
There's never enough time with them.
I wish you peace and healing.
So sorry, Yowie. Our thoughts are with you. The Old Bastard (yes, that's
a compliment in this part of the world) will be sorely missed.
You gave Shmogg the final gift, like the loving catslave you've always
been. He'll be missed by so many people who read this group.
My heart goes out to you.  I am so sorry you had to make that terrible
decision.  I know your heart is breaking, and mine is breaking with you.
 Please know how much I care, and am thinking of you.
Because of this group, many people all over the world feel as if we knew
Shmogg, and feel as if he was a part of our family, too.  He will never
be forgotten.
