Archer is in the dog house

CatNipped - 02 Oct 2007 15:02 GMT Actually, it's a kennel, but man am I mad at him.
Archer does *NOT* like being caged up and last night, while we were sleeping, he threw the granddaddy of all temper tantrums. When I went upstairs this morning I found he had thrown *all* of the litter (and everything that was *in* the litter) out of his litter box onto the floor of the kennel - his dry food bowl was filled with litter. Then he overturned his canned food bowl and smeared it all over the bottom of the cage, mixing it well with the litter (and other stuff). Then he overturned his water dish so that part of the litter on the bottom of the kennel was clumped up. The he pushed his lamb's wool bed all over the bottom of the kennel until it was well covered in.... well I don't like to think about what it was covered in!
Before I could even start to get ready for work I had to strip down the kennel, clean it and everything in it, clean Archer, clean Archer's cast, and then refill his litter box and food/water bowls. I was finishing feeding the other cats when I walked by his cage and saw him in the middle of throwing out all the litter from his litter box again! ARGH!!!!

What a mess it sounds like that was. When you think about it, that's pretty smart of him. He knows how to get your attention. How much longer will it be before he can safely be let out of the kennel?

Yep - I can't let him live in that mess. But I have no choice when I'm at work or asleep - and I don't want to board him for 6 to 8 weeks without the companionship of his bro-fur or us.

Until he gets his cast off - at lease *6 weeks*, maybe *8*!!! :< I talked to the vet yesterday, I was hoping that after a week or two the break would be healed enough to let him out - but the vet said no, the break was such that even after a few weeks if he hit it right it could re-break it even worse than it originally was.

I thought about that - but keeping on drugs for 6 weeks would be scary for me, I'd be afraid he's have withdrawals afterwards!

(Actually, I think that Ozzy was attempting to slip him a file so that he could break out.) Please be patient with the poor little Poopster. It's gotta be tough, being in the lockup and not being able to participate in household life. It WILL get better.......NOT! ;-)
Love and tons of patience, to you and the Fur-family, Grace

It WILL get better.......NOT! ;-) I let him out at night when I'm home and he will usually sit quietly on the sofa next to me. I know he doesn't understand why he has to be locked up - it's a painful situation all around! :<

just a thought Sara

No, with Ozzy in the kennel there'd be twice the bad (and 1/4 the food for Archer - Ozzy is a big eater). I'd hate to think what the two of them together could do - wrestling each other would be the least of it!

ARGH!!!! Have you tried switching to shredded paper for his litter box (run newspaper through a shredder, not one of the cross cut, but a simple length cut - or cut with a scissor, tear by hand)? I know it won't help when he dumps the poo & pee out, but it would be less mess itself to clean up.

I think it would smell too bad. We have the kennel in the great room so he can be with the rest of the family. I've considered switching to the crystals, but I really don't like those (they don't scoop well). I'll just have to deal with the mess for 5.5 more weeks.

don't fence me in! Perhaps some Feliway would help.
Poor baby. Best wishes. MLB

Ben said he's going to stop at PetsMart and get a small covered litter box to put in there with him. I just hope he can maneuver into it with his cast!

> Didn't think about that - isn't there something called Rescue Remedy too? You can get Rescue Remedy from a health food store. Just add 2 drops to the drinking water every day. I have been giving it to Rusty for some time with the vet's approval.

ARGH!!!! Poor Catnipped. He can't help wanting OUT any more than you can help knowing he has to stay IN. Have some purrs to help *you* make it through the rest of Archer's confinement.

Enfilade - 04 Oct 2007 01:48 GMT Nocturne approves. She loves to exhume the contents of the litter box to express frustration.
I don't think it's horrible or unfair of you to expect Archer to deal with the consequences of his actions while you are at work. I think that if you straighten his cage in the morning, after work, and before bed, the rest of the time he can suck it up. Otherwise it's not fair to you. He will get the food and water he needs at these times.
Bright Blessings..

Have you ever seen that video on "America's Funniest Home Videos" where the 2 year old is having a tantrum? The parents walk from room to room. When they leave his sight, he stops crying, gets up and walks to wherever they are. As soon as he can see that they see him, he throws himself back down on the floor and resumes his tantrum. They film him doing this about 5 or 6 times - moving from room to room to watch him shut up and get up only to start again when they can see him. I think it's like that with Archer - when he sees me he starts throwing a tantrum to get me to take him out. But as soon as I leave the room he quiets down again. The trick is to get the cage (and him) cleaned and then leave the room quickly enough so he doesn't have time to trash it before I'm out of his sight. ;>

But Archer thinks he has worked out the answer to his problem. Throw fit. Wreck blasted jail. Spend quality time with Mommy.
Kind of like they say about kids. They want attention. When push comes to shove, they will settle for bad attention over no attention.

[quoted text clipped - 37 lines] > > Jo Except that he doesn't get bad attention! ;> Last night I put him in his kennel while I was eating and he threw another tantrum. He rolled around in his water dish again (DH hasn't fixed that yet) and then rolled around in his litter box. I had to go get DH to help clean him up. When he was cleaned, I sat down on the sofa with him in my lap and petted him while I was drying him off. DH almost choked when he saw me and made a crack about "enabling" - Archer gave him a dirty look then looked up at me and batted his eyes as if to say, "Pay no attention to the big guy, he knows nothing!".
