It took me three months to save to buy the 4 inch memory foam bed topper.  I
have left the bed uncovered many times while changing the sheets.  Tonight I
went to town with my son for about thirty minutes or so.  When I got home,
you would have thought it snowed in my bedroom.  I turned on the light to
fnd three cats digging in the foam like they were looking for live mice.
Can save a few pieces to make sof pillows out of but that it all!!!  I have
no idea where the fur balls are right now, and frankly don't care at the
moment.

Poor Granby, I am so very sorry <snort> I realize how heartbreaking
<giggle> this probably was to you and the blatant destruction of
something you've saved for many months and anticipated having
<snicker>. I'm really, truly not laughing at you Granby and I do
understand exactly how you're feeling because I live with a Barnabus
cat and I can *so* see this happening and in about a month you'll
remember it with laughter. I won't send purrs and headbutts, you can
probably do without feline sympathy right now, but I will send you my
most calming thoughts.

Julie
Granby - 02 Oct 2007 02:53 GMT
Well (snicker this) it is already funny!  as I filled a garbage bad with the
pieces I saw three noses peeking around the door.  I turned and growled at
them and they went away again.  Might as well laugh, what is done is done
but never will I leave the bedroom open again when I am not here!  Thanks
for the (snickers) they help too....sometime.

AAARRGGGHHH!!! What little brats! I saw your other post where you had
decided to laugh at this, and I commend you, but it would have taken
me longer to get over that one. A good night's sleep on a good mattress
(or foam top on a mattress) is *so* important!

And cats do seem to do whatever they can to ruin one's good sleep,
don't they? If it's not tearing up your brand-new, three-months-of-
hard-work's-pay mattress top, it's lying on your hip so you wake up
in pain, or trying to stick their nose up your nostril, or jumping on
your full bladder, or meowing loudly at the window (Smudge), or
knocking a lamp on your head.

But <muffled snicker> the scene that awaited you <snort> actually is
a <chortle> pretty funny image <guffaw!!>.

I'm sorry you'll have to start over again! But 3 months isn't really
*that* long a time.

Not sleeping last night was enough for me!!  I went to sams and got anotheer
topper today.  The cats have been moved out of that room except at night
when I am there.  They are unhappy, but then, so was I.  The office has nice
chairs and they take turns holding down the printer anyway.

We all have a routine now, where, when I'm getting into bed, all 3 of
them (one by one, in their own time), get onto the bed with me. I read
for a while, then get sleepy and turn out the light. The 3 of them are
in their respective places, and peace reigns.

At some point, I am awakened by loud meowing. It's Smudge, standing
by my pillow, which just happens to be under the bedroom window,
demanding to be let outside.

At this point, I know that if I don't shut her out of my room, my
sleep will be continually interrupted. So I get up and walk to the door.
When she leaves the room, I shut the door. If either of the other two
happens to jump off the bed and head toward the door, they're shut out,
too. Those who remain on the bed are shut *in* the bedroom. That might
sound mean, but read on.

Roxy has a very charming way of letting me know she needs to leave the
bedroom: she climbs on me and purrs into my ear. This is a much more
pleasant way to be awakened than Smudge's yowling. As soon as it's clear
I'm awake, Roxy jumps down and heads for the door. So I get up and let
her out.

I'm not sure exactly how Licky wakes me up, but at some point, I am
awake and Licky is standing by the door. So, out he goes, and the door
is closed, and I can spend the rest of the night in peace.

It's the best of both worlds - some cuddle time with kitties early on,
and then some alone time when I can stretch out as much as I need to,
and don't end up with whining, demanding, heavy, or squabbling cats on
the bed (or on me), where I actually get contiguous minutes of sleeping! :)

I count myself lucky. Mir and Caliban usually sleep right through the
night. In the evening, I read in bed for a while, and Mir usually
follows me to bed almost imediately. She then walks all over the bed,
kneading and purring her tiny purr. This doesn't bother me, because I'm
still awake. Then she flops down with her head on my feet and her body
pressed up against my legs.

Caliban usually arrives after I turn off the light and settle down to
sleep. I can hear him come stomping in the dark, I feel him jump onto
the bed, and then I feel the bed rock violently as he gives Mir a
thorough wash. ;) Then they both settle down and fall asleep.

Mir never does anything to wake me up, unless you count the huge thump
she can make when jumping off the bed - my slim little Mir can make a
sound like a cannonball just rolled out of bed. She has often left by
the time I wake up in the morning. Caliban usually sleeps until I wake
up. He stretches and rolls around a little, then he and I get up
together. But if I've slept exceptionally late, he comes and lays on top
of me and kneads me and purrs. This is a Good Thing, since I need to
take medicines at a certain time each morning.

LOL, perhaps your neighbors think you're having a racy night. :) But
then again, you did say you lived on the first floor. I guess that's
lucky.

I guess Caliban "won" the power struggle as to who would be the giver
of baths? That sounds really cute.

Unfortunately the only intra-feline interactions that take place on
my bed are squabbles, although generally they leave each other alone.
Roxy and Licky sometimes play fight. Nobody grooms anyone else around
here!

Oh, no, Mir has not given up her License to Groom. She will not only be
on the receiving end. But in the evenings, it's usually Caliban who does
the washing.

None of our cats sleep with me.  Sometimes I miss that, and sometimes I
don't.  Cinder(RB) was glued to me at night.

However, Lucy has the strangest way of waking me up.  She is so gentle.
She tickles my arm with her whiskers. It is so sweet. She does a faint
meow sometimes. She is very soft spoken, and I don't think the meow by
itself wakes me up all the time. The other girls do the normal
headbutt/walk on your face type things.  Lucy just has to be different.

God night sleep and furballs  never thought you could use those words in the
same sentence ;-)

I know how you fell Granby.  I used to love leather chairs.  When I was
living on a tight budget years ago I saved up for almost a year to get a
leather recliner.  I brought it home used it for several days  very
comfortable.  I left my office door open by accident by the time I came
home.  The recliner had been shredded on one side.  I was in shock  and here
come one of my cats from than walked right up stretched out and began to
sharpen its claws .  I yelled at him what do you think you are doing  he
looked at me and went back to his business than walked calmly away after
that  no more leather.

Oh no!!! Oh my goodness. I am thinking about getting one of these. A
lot of people mention the smell when they first get them. I wonder if
that provoked them. Remember, they are just cats and don't really know
better. ((((hugs)))))

They are woth the money.  They have a cover and I fabrezed that fairly good
and let it dry becuase of the smell.  Have had it four months so don't think
that was the issue.  Just great fun to tear something up I would think. I
love the thing, you sort of sink in and is warms up my back which sometimes
hurts from lifting 20 ounce cases of soda.  An age thing I know but it
helps.

Speaking of foam --   I had decided to replace my foam pillow, so I
casually just tossed it on the floor.  TuTu immediately took charge of it.
She loved it and slept on it for a few weeks.    One day I noticed her
belly fur was practically gone.   It was from sleeping on that foam pillow
(contact allergy) and the tummy skin was all red and irritated.  I put the
pillow in the garbage and her belly fur grew back.   MLB

I know it's not really funny, but.....  Until I got my first

bothered to make my bed in the morning.  That changed quickly.

I'm afraid this advice will mostly fall on deaf ears in this newsgroup,
Tweed. Most of us *like* to sleep with our kitties! And although I often
end up tossing mine out of the bedroom at some point during the night,
even I want to *start* the night off with feline company!

Besides, keeping cats out of the bedroom doesn't safeguard your expensive
stuff from damage, since most folks keep valuable items all over the house,
not just in the bedroom. (Anyway, a couch costs more to replace than a
mattress top. Not that I'm suggesting one deliberately sacrifice the
mattress top to keep the cats happy and away from the couch. :))

Lets just ignore valuable items all over the house.  My cats have never
damaged any furniture or valuables.  I just like to sleep on my own because
I am a light sleeper; cats on the bed would wake me and I need to go to work
5/7.  I have enough trouble sleeping without cats in my bedroom doing their
nocturnal things and jumping on and off my bed. My bedroom is out of bounds.

Oh, I know. And if I were as light a sleeper, I wouldn't let my cats
sleep with me, either. (But I'd miss them!) But this thread started out
because someone (senior moment, can't remember who, sorry!) allowed
her cats into the bedroom, resulting in a destroyed mattress top made
of expensive "memory foam". So I was addressing the "protect your
furniture" argument against allowing cats into the bedroom.

I do sympathize with the issue of cats interfering with sleep. Mine
wake me up, and often cause me orthopedic pain by sleeping on me. And
I have enough problems without cats! I usually wake up with pinched
nerves in my neck (because I'm sleeping in some weird, twisted position
that I did NOT start out in), and the pinched nerves cause numbness
and often pain in my hand and arm. Add cats to the mix and it just
gets worse. I've long suspected that they're getting kickbacks from
my chiropractor. :)

Joyce
Stormmee - 07 Oct 2007 09:35 GMT
being a light sleeper would be an issue.  I only sleep about 3/4 hours at a

Maybe the bedroom isn't the best place for the cats but, as my husband died
16 months ago, I don't know hwo I could have made it without their company
through some looonnngg nights.  When nothing else helped, therir purring
often was the calming thing between sleep or no sleep.  Playing bed mice was
the only thing I had to laugh about for many months.  Things are getting
better but they are still my friends so, I'll deal with their bad habits,
once in awhile for the company. I just looked up at Willow bathing hrself on
the printer, O.T. is trying to figure out how to shredd some papers and
Piglet is sleeping, as usual in the softest chair.  Bast does bless.

I can really understand this. Years ago I went through a pretty traumatic
relationship ending, after 15 years of living together. Roxy and Smudge
made all the difference for me. (It also didn't hurt to have a bunch of
wonderful friends, but generally speaking, the friends didn't climb into
bed with me at night. :)) I know exactly what you mean about their purring
being a calming influence, as well as their games. Roxy was still a kitten -
she was less than 6 months old when the poop hit the fan. She was so
adorable I would practically cry every time I looked at her.

Smudge was more my ex-partner's cat, but I ended up with her - long
story. I was so happy on the day when I found out I didn't have to give
her up - she and Roxy were really close, and I'd started getting pretty
attached to her myself. We were quite the threesome for several years,
until I did the unforgivable and started fostering kittens. That's how
I ended up with the black-and-white horror (from Smudge's perspective,
although I, as well as certain cats on this newsgroup, will heartily
disagree :)).

And 16 months is just not a very long time, for healing after the death
of your spouse. I'm sure your cats have been wonderful, and therapeutic,
and fulfilling in their own right.
