I know almost all the cats in the neighbourhood and roughly where they
belong.  However in the past week I have seen one on my path twice that I
don't recognise at all.
He/she is white with black face and patches on the back, a bit like Stinky.
Oh, please, send purrs that this cat already has a home.  I do NOT want
another cat landing here.  I really have enough with the two that I've got
<panic mode>
I hope I haven't got one of those neon signs on the house.

Excuse me, excuse me!   I do not have "patches."  I have a
"mask-and-mantle" bicolor pattern.

Purrs for the little feller's health and safety. ;)

Sorry, Stinky, if I called you "white and black" and suggested that you had
patches. Shame on me.

I am the most forgiving of cats.  Purrs to you.

Purrs indeed.  THe stray hanging about our complex has moved on
(hopefully back to his home).  I was afraid at the thought of
squishing a fifth cat in here.

Purrs for the cat to already have a home, but if s/he doesn't, it's no
use fighting it, you know. KFC and BF may well have posted the sign.
There's nothing you can do about it if they have. ;o)

Those markings sound like Snoopy's, congratulations on now being owned
by three cats. ;-)

I think Kitty FC must have been running a correspondence course on
hunting, Bagheera caught a collard dove yesterday.

Got away with that one:-)

Was that his first CD? Did he eat it?  If so, Kitty FC is proud of him.

Kitty used to catch collared doves all the time, they were definitely her
preferred food.  Now she has retired and spends almost all her time basking
in front of the fire, she only goes out and gets one when she doesn't
approve of the food I've provided.  She seems to not like tuna flavoured cat
food. That's the time when she needs to catch a dove.
There is no danger that she will make the least effect on their population
here.  There are absolutely loads of them.  Eighteen today in my chicken
run, helping themselves to the grub. They wait until I've fed my hens, and
then swoop down to help them eat it.  When I go down with my bucket of
layers pellets and grain, I look up into the trees, and there they are.
Waiting.

Talking about collared doves - or ring-necked doves as they are sometimes
known in America - I have a friend in Michigan and he actually *bought* the
one he's got.  Amazing, they are all over the place here.

Ava [my ring-neck] showed up injured on the doorstep one night and by
the time she'd healed up, we'd gotten attached to her :-).

He ate some of it and wasted the rest, as you say though they are
plentiful. It's amazing how they've spread accross the country, the
first ones in England were a pair that showed up in Norfolk in 1967,
none had been seen before then. I just looked out of the window and
counted 15.

Thanks, Polonca, your purrs worked.  I have asked around the neighbourhood
and discovered where the cat lives.
Narrow escape ;-)  <phew>

I had this situiation recently. A beautiful fluffy tabby and white cat
pitched up outside my houe and kept crying to be let in & fed. He was
always hanging around & I thought he was a stray. So, this evening, I
tied a note around his neck that said, I'm hanging around #16 as I'm
getting fed there - could my real mommy please ring and let the mommy in
#16 know that I have a home?

This evening, an lady turns up at my door. Turns out that the gentleman
cat is called Basil, and he likes to be sociable with all the neighbours
and examine all the food bowls in the area!

A note around the neck is a great way to find out if the cat has a home
if you don't recognise it.

That's a great idea, except if the cat is too shy to let you catch it.
That's always been my experience with true strays, they won't let you near
them.
If a kitty is brave, comes up to me for a scritch they usually have a
foreverhome nearby.

We always have to introduce ourselves to new neighbors.  To let them know
that Jake has a home - ours.  And if he tries to settle in to please kick
his furry butt back out by 7pm as he is supposed to be home.  For a cat that
is bound and determined to get out every morning, he sure plays the homeless
starving waif well at the neighbors.

We can always tell when one neighbor is home from work for the day.  Because
Jake will go to her house and stay all day if she lets him.  Or if another
is ill, cause he will go in there if she is napping.  She especially likes
him as she really isn't able to care for a cat of her own anymore.

Most everyone around here has a bowl of cat food and a bowl of water out all
the time.  And many leave their garage doors open a foot so cats can come
and go.

Talking of cats visiting neighbours reminds me of Smokey (RB) when he
wanted some peace and quiet he would go next door. My neighbour, who was
also my best friend, pretended he didn't like cats. One day he called me
over the fence and said, "if you're wondering where Smokey is, he's been
asleep on my bed for the last 4 hours"
