CATherine - 10 Nov 2004 03:53 GMT For several weeks my pc has been acting up. For no reason at random times the screen would go black and it would automatically re-boot and do scan-disk. It kept getting more and more frequent. At first my son said it is just a Bill Gates glitch. But he finally had his movie down-loads interrupted (we are net-worked with my modem doing the work) one too many times. So he started trouble-shooting. he couldn't figure it out. Except moving the mouse sets it off. But it will sometimes do it when the mouse is dis-connected.
So, he had me get some CD-RWs and then he went to format them and his pc won't do the Ws anymore for some reason!! He is royally p*ssed! But he is working on my pc and his doing something, I don't know what--making room or something. But the plan is to use his pc to reach my huge picture collection and all my data through the networking and put it on the new disks. then he wants to purge my hard drive and finally get rid of the &*%#* Millenium OS and then install Win 98 from the disk we bought a few years ago. But he says it will all take a lot of time. He hopes it solves the problem. It better.
Right now he has taught me a few keyboard commands and they are cumbersome and hard to remember. And I keep reaching for the mouse! I will be glad when he has it all going again. But it might not be until next week. So I really won't be replying much until then. Although I did want to know keyboard commands all these years. Little did i know I would *have* to learn at least a few. Now I feel like Robin. I want a mousie!!
I will try to keep up with the reading al;though I have already lost a few messages through time limits.

> CATherine Frankly, I doubt this is the fault of your opsys, Millenium or otherwise. Windows doesn't suddenly decide to reboot your machine or not recognize your mouse. I'm not a hardware tech but it sounds to me like a problem with the motherboard or some other internal component. Still, I understand your frustration and it's a wise plan to get your photos and other things off the machine before it decides to die completely, rather than sporadically.

I recall reading about a type that produced exactly those symptoms. Since your PC is hooked up to the Internet and your son likes to download files, there's a pretty good chance that you've acquired a virus. You should probably do a Google search on "virus killer" and pick one of the free ones or whichever one appeals to you and then use it right away before your PC stops entirely. Good luck!
Once you do rescue your PC, it might be a good idea to buy an external hard disk drive, then store all your valuable or irreplaceable files on it. That way, even if your PC dies completely, your precious files won't die right along with it. The external drive can be unplugged from the dead PC and then plugged into another one, perhaps the one your son uses. That way your files are still usable while the original PC is being fixed.

That way your files >are still usable while the original PC is being fixed. I tend to agree with the above posts. Seems much more likely, IMO, to be a virus or hardware problem. I'd definaitely look for a virus first, since it would be cheaper to fix. There should be several decent anti virus utilities are free for personal use. Once upon a time, back when I was in a Users Group (I was the club librarian, so did a lot of DL'ing and shareware testing), I kept up with the various AV programs, but for the past couple years I just subscribe to Norton's and get their updates every Friday night.
Of course, one of the biggies you hear from computer techies is the importance of regular maintenance - including a rotating backup systems. How often you back up depends on how often you have new files. Without backups, you'll be able to restore the programs (though it can be a headache to restore you settings), but lose all your data files and pix if the pc crashes. An external drive is a good idea, but if you have a controller/hardware problem with your I/O ports (seems likely, especially with the mouse causing problems) I'd worry about corrupted data on the external drive.

Hardware issues are likely, but it is also highly probable that you have so much adware and spyware that the machine is highly unstable.
There are a couple of free cleaner utilities that we use: Ad-Aware and Spybot - neither is perfect but they complement each other and will almost always clean up the machine, though it may take several passes with both. <http://www.lavasoftusa.com/>, click on "Ad-Aware Personal"; <http://www.spybot.info/en/index.html>, click on "Spybot S&D".

Though it's still an excellent idea - I don't think Microsoft has ever released an OS less reliable and more bug-prone than ME (and that's saying an awful lot!).
Your son might want to see if he can find a freeware or shareware memory diagnostic tool somewhere to check the RAM.

bonbon - 10 Nov 2004 15:23 GMT Make sure your system is virus free. Run Norton Utilities System Check to find Disk and Windows problems. Then run Speed Disk to defragment each drive. (Speed Disk takes a while)

(Speed Disk takes a while) Don't stop there. I know it sounds paranoid, but get a reputable spyware or adware program to scan for those, too. It's often some insidious doohickey that found its way onto your PC that causes it to reboot like that. See here: <http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/> <http://www.spywareinfo.com/>
Don't beat yourself up if you do find some malware. Some very common apps that almost everyone has, are adware; the most notorious is RealNetworks media player. Practically every file-sharing program is adware, and so are the various download accelerators that are so common.
Also, get a firewall-- even if you just have a dialup connection: <http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/home.jsp>

Doesn't it just floor you that spammers who deliberately misspell words to fool your junk email catchers, and spammers that download destructive files to your PC, think that you'll just forgive all that and buy their products any way!!??? What are they thinking??!!! Um, never mind, troglodites don't think, do they? (I don't buy products from *legitimate* companies who send me spam - just for spite - I *HATE* spammers!!!)
What *really* gets to me is, just as some nice guy at my office comes up to my desk, I'll get an email with graphic pictures of "yung teenes taking it up the @$$". I have my preview pane turned on so I don't have to open up each email I get at work, so these disgusting pictures just show up there, bald faced (or bald-arsed), on my screen. AAAARRRRRRGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!
I feel sorry for people who have young children who get these emails - it's just so disheartening to live in such a gross and stupid world!
Hugs,

The latest versions/patches of Outlook and Outlook Express block all images from email by default. You have to click a certain specified area to download the images into the body of the message. I highly recommend the update for home and office if you must use MS mail clients. Mozilla Thunderbird blocks them, too.

Stormin Mormon - 12 Nov 2004 13:30 GMT Is it possible you mean scandisk and then defragment?
What I do is to right click and shut down all the items in my tool tray. Messenger, task scheduler, close browsers, close email, and then shut down antivirus.
Click start, programs, accessories, disk cleanup. That will help kill off some unused files and such.
Click start, programs, accessories, scandisk. Run that (oh, wait, it keeps running auto when your PC reboots). Nevermind.
Anyhow, then click start, programs, accessories, defragment. That one takes about an hour, but well worth it.

But he says > it will all take a lot of time. He hopes it solves the problem. It better. ME is the worst virus I've ever got!. You may have trouble getting rid of it, as it won't let you delete it or format the hard drive if thats the hard drive you boot from. What you need to do, and sorry if this is complicated, is make your hard drive with Millenium on it a *slave* HD and use another master HD to boot from. Using the master HD you can fomat your 'slave' HD and install W98 on it. Win98 Second Edition is still the best Window version, IMHO - whilst not perfect, its not subject to many of the more sophisticated attackes that work against the current Windows, and if things get bad you can always drop back into DOS.

CATherine - 11 Nov 2004 05:18 GMT Wow!! i sure got a lot of helpful replies! Thanks! My son likes F-Protect, so he ran that tonight and found no virus. I have ZoneAlarmPro and it has not alerted me to anything. He checked the mouse and driver and then the motherboard. A couple months ago he had the case open to clean it and everything was ok then. He did tell me that that the OS should have been re-installed about every year and a half. But he was too busy and forgot about it. He said he needs to do his as well. He has been digging into DOS and found no problems. He says I have no adware or spyware. Of course he has mysettings for very tight security. He seems convinced that the problem is Bill Gates and ME instability. And the long time of not re-installing. He feels very sorry. I made a pact with him to do it regularly every New Year's. But we are still going to put on Win 98 2nd edition. And he is going to partition the hard drive. Yowie, he says he can completely purge the hard drive, no problem. He did it with a friend's pc and installed 98 on it no problem. If you want details I can have him write it all down for you. Purrs for everyone!!

If any of them are leaking or bulging the board needs to be replaced. There was a bad batch of capacitors made a while back that affected all brands of motherboards. The symptoms you are describing are symptoms of a MB with bad caps. The only other thing I can think of would be a bad or failing power supply.

I used to fix PCs back in the early 80s and some of the weirdest problems I ever saw were fixed when I replaced the power supply as a last resort. That's a good tip about the capacitors too.

I'm not a hardware tech nor do I play one on TV, but I have been owned by computers since the mid 1980's when they were still twinkles in most people's eyes. The behavior CATherine mentions definitely screams hardware problems. I can't speculate on the cause but I doubt seriously it requires reformatting the HD and installing another operating system. Just my two cents, which is worth about 1 cent given the current economy.
Jill
CATherine - 12 Nov 2004 03:31 GMT As for the solutions Bob mentioned, my power supply is ATX and is fine. So my son is going to check out the capacitor possibility tomorrow while I am at work and out of his way.
Jill, my son said about the reinstalling frequency, that it depended on the type of usage the pc gets and the pc and OS. He said a lot of stuff that makes my eyes glaze over!! I ask a simple question and get a lecture! But it is a lot of work and skill maintaining a pc that most people don't know. But inconsistencies build up and ME is unstable anyway.
