breeders hoped Bengal cats would have a gentle and friendly temperament.
As far as I can tell, the healthy ones are extremely active. Even people
that have and love then don't usually describe them as gentle.

Let's just say that my colleague who has a Bengal male describes him as
"incredibly beautiful but very demanding.." AFAIK he is gentle, just a pain
in the ar8e to live with.

As most of you know, we have two bengals, Luna and Maya. They are very
friendly, but definitely not gentle. Well, they have been gentle with
all the kittens they've ever met, treating them as their own. But grown
cats... not so much. :) Not sure if it's the breed or their gender,
girl cats tend to be less easy-going than boys, IME. They are also
*very* human oriented and way too smart.
Now, for a gentle and friendly temperament, nothing beats a Tonkinese.

Well... I suppose they're "gentle" if you compare them to living with
a full sized Bengal Tiger. =o)
They're beautiful, but not exactly sedate, I've heard.

Just as a point of information: Can a cat not be BOTH
"active" and "gentle"?

Probably, just from what I've heard they don't slow down long enough to let
you know if they are gentle or not. And if they do slow down they are
likely planning your demise. I know my friend cannot trust hers around
strangers. Actually, only her male cat is what you might call hers. She
got the female for him and she is pretty much his (the male cat's) cat. Yes
they are both neutered.
She had a wonderful time when they put their house up for sale. Whenever
the house was shown, she had to bundle up the cats in the car and go sit
with them somewhere. Not too bad unless you consider the cats spent all
their time in the car screaming. The male just likes to yell. The female
can make herself sick.

I'd say that Mir is both active and gentle, but then I've never met a
Bengal, so my concept of 'active' may be quite different from a Bengal
slave's. But she is awake much more than Caliban and demands a lot of
attention (as witnessed in that video I posted of Caliban on the fridge,
where Mir complains in the background).
