Mithu has undertaken the training of DD1, recently 4 years old, who has
suddenly expressed a deep interest in the felines that have been part of
her world since birth. She follows him around the house, to pet him and
pick him up and carry him around. She's learned the tongue clicking
noise I use to get the cats' attention, and orders him around like a
drill sergeant.
She is learning, slowly, about the "you can't make a cat do what he
doesn't want to do" lesson. He likes to go into her room to supervise
things, and when he's had enough of being picked up by the armpits
(we're working on that too), he crawls under her bed, just out of her
reach, to lounge -- "Mommy! Mithu's under my bed and he won't come out!"
He is incredibly patient and tolerant, perfect traits for his job. Not
to worry, though, I make sure he gets lots of down time, and have her
reward him with treats when he's been an especially good sport.
DD2 is still in the "chase them and pull their tails" phase of her
training. She is getting better about petting though.
Cheers,
Caroline S.

How sweet, but we always knew she would make a good catslave, she has
the genes for it. One day I was coming home with Sam from his
oncologist and the neighbor and her two girls were in their yard. So
I stopped and let them "meet" Sam since he's such an easily handled
cat. The youngest is less than 2 years old and she patted his head.
It was so cute because she was hesitant at first then she patpatpat
and his head would bob each time. We had to teach her about petting
and stroking the cat.

LOL!! Actually, I've had cats who like being petted that way, if
you're gentle (ie, don't pound on their head, but just gently pat
them so their head bounces lightly). I used to call one of my cats
"bouncy head" when I petted her like that.
I do agree that it's good to teach kids that this is not the standard
way to pet a cat, and that most cats don't particularly enjoy it.

I let a friend of mine's little boy meet Fugazi and Isis and I nearly died of
embarassment!
He was skritching them and he looked at me and said "Are they girl cats or
boy cats?"
"They're girl cats"
"Are they married?"
"Cats don't get married"
"So" he said "If they don't get married how do they have little cats?"
I just looked at his dad and said "This is YOUR department!"
He was about 4 then

When I was a child, a neighbour had a collie I adored, and I wanted to
persuade my parents to adopt one of her puppies, but when I mentioned this
to the owner, in hopes of finding out when the puppies might arrive, I was
told she would never have puppies. I couldn't understand how the owner
could be so certain that she wouldn't have puppies - she was a female,
right? And grown up?
Looking back, I think the owner was embarrassed and didn't quite know how
to get into the details of just how the 'no puppy' thing worked with a
neighbour's child!

Your early pictures of DD1 and Mithu a while back were so cute. A
patient kitty must be toddler heaven.
