I'm following in MaryL's footsteps, and making sure you all know that
everyone is fine, but I did commit a tiny blunder this evening.

I came home, and Smudge was, as usual, hanging out by the front steps.
I got out, petted her, and then got some stuff from my trunk. As I
started for the stairs, I noticed she wasn't following me. So I turned
around, thinking she might be "having words" with one of the neighborhood
cats. But I didn't see her at all. She seemed to have vanished completely.
That was completely unlike her, so I was puzzled.

And then it hit me - I had shut her in the trunk of my car! She often
jumps in when I open it, but I didn't see her get in there this time.
So I went back and unlocked it, and there she was, looking completely
unperterbed. She jumped out as though nothing was amiss.

I swear, one of these days I'm going to arrive at work (a 45-minute
commute from home), open my trunk to get my lunch, and out will pop
Smudge. I can just imagine calling my manager from the parking lot
to explain why I won't be in for another 90 minutes!

LOL! These things happen. The other day, I nearly shut Mir out in the
enclosure for the night.

I was in bed, reading, when I noticed a spider on the wall. I'm
arachnophobic, so I couldn't leave it there or I wouldn't have slept all
night. So I threw open the door to the enclosure, got a broom, and swept
the spider from the wall and out into the enclosure (this is what I
always do - this way, I can at least imagine that the spider survives,
because I don't want to kill them. It's not their fault that I'm phobic
about them).

Then I closed the door and went back to reading in bed. I started to get
tired, and switched off the lights to go to sleep. Mir usually jumps
into bed at this stage, at the latest, and settles down on my legs. I
could only hear Caliban stomping around (he getas into bed after I go to
sleep usually). As I was drifitng off to sleep, I idly wondered where
Mir was. I couldn't hear her clicking around (she lets her claws hang
out ;).

Suddenly I was wide awake as I realised she must have slipped out while
the door was open! I jumped up and opened the door, and there she was,
calmly meatloafing on the cat tree and looking at me like, what's the
problem? And she didn't even want to come inside, I had to grab her and
bring her in. Argh!

I feel exactly the same way about spiders as you do, Marina.
I guess it's still warm so Mir was enjoying the evening air.

LOL!  Yes, that would have made you very popular with your manager--and
propably everyone in the place would have known why you were late.  Cats
just love to jump into any space that seems like a "hole," and then they
wonder why we think something is wrong.

That reminds me so much of a friend of mine and her cat, Goblin (RB).
Actually, we met through Goblin but that's another story.  He was a
svelte, completely black beauty who was incredibly friendly and
curious.  At the time, E was letting him out unsupervised for short
periods of time (I know, I tried to convince her it wasn't terribly
safe...).  Anyhow, one December afternoon she let him out and, come
dark, couldn't find him.  Gobie had several friends of the human
variety who routinly invited him into their apartments for treats and
pettins but he wasn't at any of his usual haunts.  Paniced, E called
me and several other friends and asked us to help her look for
Goblin.  Of course, we all bundled up and went out with flashlights to
help.  I was going around flashing my light into cars to see if he had
gotten locked in when a police car drove by!  OMG, how did this look!
A cold December night and me, wandering around with a flashlight
peering into cars!!  The police car stopped and luckily E came by and
explained the situation. We did eventually find him, meatloafing
inside a car, and knocked on doors to find the owner to let him out.
They said he had wandered by being his usual friendly self while they
were unloading groceries earlier that afternoon but they had no idea
he had jumped into the car!  After that, Goblin was a bit more
supervised!!!
