Cleo's problem

I've mentioned before about Cleo's preference for peeing on the carpet
rather than in her box. She gets locked up at night and for an hour in the
afternoon, which helped in the beginning, but she's been incorrigible
lately. She pretty much pees everywhere in her room, except her box. She
even peed in her water dish once and we suspect she sleeps in her litter
box.

But the last week I've been minding the kitties by myself and she's been a
model citizen, using the box like clockwork, including unescorted visits.
The only thing I've been doing differently is adding more litter to the
boxes, although I suppose it could be the change in keepers. Perhaps a
rehome is the only solution for her.

The first time I ever posted on any cat related newsgroup (I think it
was rpch+b) it was to ask for advice about Sarrasine who unless the
box was completely pristine i.e. just changed would use the floor next
to the box (for solids, she's still pee in the box) I tried several of
the suggestions made and none made a difference. Then one day I'd
brought the larger bag of litter and not thinking I emptied the whole
bag into the tray

No problems since, it appears Sarrasine does not so much wish to bury
the evidence more make sure it can never be found again!

Melisande would once-in-a-while deposit solid waste on the
floor outside the box, but it was simply by mistake - she'd
have all four feet IN the box, but her butt hanging over the
end!  Since I got a covered cat-box with a flap on the
front, she's been good as gold.  (The flap is loose fitting
enough so that, if she really WANTED to, she could make her
deposits on the floor, but apparently she just needed some
sort of clue about where the box ends.)

Nikki did that during the last eyar or so of her life, but in her case,
she would pee outside the box. All four paws inside, bum hanging
outside. Luckily the present two have impeccable litterbox manners (if
you don't count the
flinging-litter-all-around-the-floor-while-digging-to-China).

That's one reason I got the covered box!

Spicey has a covered box, but litter still escapes.

Cleo was using the box the other day when I was in the room (also unusual)
and she was furiously pawing at the air trying to bury her treasure. She's
been so 'good' the last little while that I didn't want to break it to her
that her technique was lacking. :-)

LOL! Caliban does this every single time he uses the box. When he is
done, he turns around and starts waving his paw in the air *above* the
pee/poo with an utterly disgusted look on his face and his little nosie
all crinkled up. It's hilarious.

Yeah, my cats busily scratch walls, floors, sides of the box
- they understand the idea of scratching, by don't seem to
quite grasp the concept of "burying"!

I've read that some cats actually don't like a lot of litter in their
boxes, because it causes their footing to shift and feel insecure.  So
every situation is going to be a bit different.  Dot prefers to pee in
a box with a shallow layer of litter.

You've shown just an amazing amount of patience with Cleo.  I know how
hard it is.  But with her peeing history, could she really be rehomed?
And anyway, you seem to be doing so well now, so maybe you're close to
a solution already?

It would be hard to rehome Cleo given her mental issues. She's been kicked
once (broken tooth and bad eye), but I don't know if that happened because
of her issues or after she was dropped off. Hopefully it's the litter issue,
but I suspect it's the change in routine.
