Sabrina has been peeing all over the house since she had a bladder
infection about
4 months ago.  I've had her urine tested several times and it has been
fine each
time since she took the antibiotics.  Sabrina has had to have several
surgeries
(incomplete palate repair, several surgeries to remove a tumor in her
middle ear)
and tends to be a cat who gets into everything and is always kind of
hyper.
One of those that curiosity killed.  The vet thinks that she may just
be having
anxiety issues triggered by the bladder infection so she has suggested
using
doggie prozac.  It was fairly recently approved for dogs and is named
Reconcile.
It hasn't been "officially" approved for cats, but my vet has used it
with good
results.  The tablet is flavored and chewable.  Sabrina will get only
1/4 tablet
because she is small.

I found an article about it on the net:
http://www.technologyreview.com/read_article.aspx?id=18463
They also talk about the drug companies getting into medication
formulated
especially for pets because there is a pretty good market for it.
Maybe
soon no more trying to get the kitty to take strawberry or bananna
flavored
medicine made for children.

Wish Sabrina and I luck.  I'm hoping to start it with her this
weekend.  Anyone
else used Reconcile yet?

I'm curious why they aren't trying amitrypteline. That is usually the
choice here because it also has anti-inflalmatory properties in case
there is some interstitial cystitis going on.

I didn't know anything about amitrypteline.  I'll ask the vet.  Thanks
for the information.

As one Debby to another Debbie, amitrypteline is also A LOT CHEAPER than
Prozac or its generic.

And Dot is on buspirone.  These are the three anti-anxiety medications
I've heard of being prescribed for urine marking.  I've heard that for
behavioral issues, Prozac may have the highest rate of success of
these three though.

I don't know what effect Prozac has on dogs and cats.  I had to take it for
a while for bereavement issues, I am not taking it now.
It took around 6 weeks to have an effect.  It flattened my mood. Nothing was
good, nothing was bad, which allowed me to recover from the bad.
Unfortunately I have found that the *good* has not yet come back. I seem to
not be able to get happy about anything.
By all means try it with Sabrina for her peeing, but do watch for signs when
she has been on it for a while if she doesn't get enjoyment from anything.
Oh, and the bad dreams that Prozac causes too, but cats can't tell you this.
