Typhoon headed toward Tokyo

Cantate - 05 Sep 2007 12:18 GMT ...the good news is that our school has "late start" (we don't have to be there till 10:30, if at all, depending on whether the typhoon is almost past by then or if it will hit later). The other good news is that all pets are inside and catnip has been liberally sprinkled to keep everybody happy. (It's Paulette's first introduction to catnip-- hope it won't lead her astray into a decadent lifestyle!)
The bad news is that a couple of weeks ago my street (at the top of a hill but with a depression in the middle) flooded and came into our entranceways, floated our potted plants into each other's yards, and generally caused a mess. (And when I think about all the outdoor cats in the area who use the ground as... well... you know... just think of all the crud in that water I was wading in!) The neighbors have prepared for this one by putting sandbags out. I don't have sandbags. (And no, kitty litter bags won't work. I use wood pellets.) I don't think it would be able to come any higher than it did last week, though, so we should be fine.
Sounds like Felix made a mess. I pray that Henriette doesn't, and that all of you are safe and purring.

Last evening, we had a terrific windstorm (not typhoon) with 70 mph winds that took out large trees, roof, windows, etc. ...lots of lightning and very loud thunder. TuTu was scared and huddled around my feet Thousand of home were without power for several hours ( I have not heard the latest figures). So will purrs that the expected storms dissipates quickly. MLB

I don't have sandbags either, so I made my own. I save the plastic bags my newspapers come in and fill them with kitty litter. They work fine.

Typhoon has slowed down so we probably won't get it till tonight. However, we still have a late start. Otherwise I'd already be in the middle of my first class. :*)
Thanks for purrs; I'll keep you posted.

Cantate - 06 Sep 2007 12:53 GMT 8:45 p.m. and it's gettting wild out there-- rain slashing loudly on all sides. School is cancelled for tomorrow and it's supposed to be a direct hit over us at about midnight, continuing tomorrow. It's moving very slowly, so flooding is expected.
None of the cats are objecting to being inside. In fact, Cherry has been walking around me and headbutting me-- she only rarely does that, and always when she's uptight about something. Jona found a corner where that pipsqueak Paulette can't bother her. Paulette found the rug where the catnip is spread and is keeping it warm. Emma, as usual the "wired" cat, is jumping on top of the fridge, down from the fridge, up on the bookcase, down from the bookcase, up, down, up, down.
I'm sure we'll be fine, but I'm sure glad all the animals are inside!

It might be the weather when we have thunderstorms, Dunzi and Sarsi don't stray very far from Dave and watch his every move. Once when a loud clap of thunder caught him by surprise, he jumped and they both ran for cover but on the whole as long as Paw doesn't look worried, they aren't

Slave of the Fabulous Furballs
Granby - 06 Sep 2007 13:56 GMT Hello, they call me Gramby and I wandered over here from the rec.pets.cats.community. I just have to tell you about Lewi. My son and family are his total slaves. He is a cat that is deaf and he has a help Dog, sort of like a seeing eye dog. The dog never gets out of Lewie's line of vision. To my point now. We had a tornado go over earlier in the year. Lewi showed no emotion about it until Sassy reacted then, and only then did Lewi go hide in the empty fishtank.

I leave open carriers out during tornado season.
Cantate - 07 Sep 2007 01:12 GMT Hi Granby, thanks for your story, and welcome!
We weathered the night all right. Cherry slept with every centimetre of her body as close to mine as she could get it, and when the wind got especially strong she would squirm and try to get even closer. Jona found the corner the farthest away from any windows (and as I thought about it, the corner she chose is the only one in the house like that-- smart cat!) and slept. Paulette slipped down in between the chair cushions and stayed there. I don't think Emma slept; every time I'd come out of my room, she would start talking to me and giving me big saucer-eyes.
The neighbourhood didn't have a flood this time, but there are a lot of branches scattered around. Other places didn't seem to fare so well-- there have been rockslides, landslides, waves coming over the highways, and some evacuations. Trains and road traffic stoppages have caused a lot of people to sleep (or not) en route or in their companies. That stinkin' typhoon decided to go straight up the Japanese archepelago instead of hitting us and then going out to sea like they thought it was going to yesterday. The people up north are now scrambling to get everything under wraps.
The news this morning said this is the worst typhoon to hit Tokyo for at least 10 years. (I make it 12-- I remember the last biggie.)
Anyhow, we are all fine and appreciate the purrs. We would appreciate more purrs for the people, cats, dogs, cows, etc. that are still in the path!

Granby - 07 Sep 2007 01:21 GMT We are fairly new to owning cats, oops sorry, to being slaves to cats. My late husbnd was ill for a couploe of years and a stray that decided to live with us "D*G* people, decided to become his guardian cat. We have learned many things about cats includeing, when there are tornado warnings, we put them in carriers so we know where they are.
Miz Piglet, O.T. Mahoney, and Willow (full name Whispering Willow Walker)allow Scooter D*G and I to share their house.
My son and his family have a stray named Lucky, Lewi, whom it was somhow determined is French, he is the totally deaf kitten and the cats agree to let Sassy (the cat-helper) and Maggie share their home.
