Next Saturday I am going to the town shelter to look at kittycats.  It has
been more than 20years since I had the best cat in the world, Shadow
kitten.

Sigh.  I know I will never have a cat like her again. But I saw a picture on
petfinder.  Grey tuxedo :)  yes, looks like my Shadow.  Her name is Sadie.
She is one year old and the lady I have been emailing, doesn't know her
history but says the folks at the shelter will.  She does remember her
as "feisty"  hmmmm... don't know if I can handle feisty.  I haven't held a
kitty in about 20 years.  And the last kitty I petted (was trying to adopt
one from a foster home, thought I had found the "one" and he bit me, badly,
very badly.  Was a declawed kitty and they didn't know why he had been
dumped, think they know now, unfortunately) The biter kind of made me
gunshy though I have been bitten by dogs, horses (too many horses) I never
had a bite get that nasty.  So I might not want to handle feisty though
they say she is a love bug when she gets to know you.

Anyway, so I am off to meet kitties next Saturday.  Maybe Sadie, maybe
somebody else. Maybe nobody.  Will wait and see who warms up to me and says
to take him/her home.  I have no preferences really about the gender or the
color.  Or the age as long as they are grown up.  This will be an only
Kitty.  We can only have one here.  My Shadow was an only cat and didn't
seem to be missing anything though she was raised that way.  Sadie (feisty)
has just learned to get along with other cats according to her blurb on the
web, so I was thinking maybe she wouldn't mind not having to continue to
get along with them :) There is a big crabapple tree in the dining room
window with a lot of bird and squirrel action. All the windows have wide
sills for kittes :) and I am also willing to get a fish tank for kitty
entertainment and my mother lives in the same complex and would come by to
visit almost every day when I am at work.

That is why I am not getting a kitten.  Even though I will feel safer with a
kitten (uh, but look up my old story about 2 lb Shadow kitten sometime :)
and helping to "form" their little personality :) I work long hours and a
kitten really needs more company than I can provide right now.

The shelter person doesn't think I am bad for keeping an only kitty.  She
says some of the kitties at the shelter have been there so long they would
be thrilled for some privacy and their own place and person.  Hope I am
doing the right thing.

Old one year old kittens need love to.  I didn't let Charlie get Jake until
after he retired because I think you do shape the personality of a young
kitten.  And leaving her home alone a lot isn't the way I'd like to shape
one.  A grown up kitten sleeps more than a bitty and is more able to work
its activity to meet your schedule.  Unless of course you really expect to
sleep soundly from 9pm to 8am.

OK Bast, we have a good home for one of you children.  Send the right one
OK?

Declawed cats tend to become biters - and have litterbox "issues", and
usually a very cranky disposition when they get older because they get
really, really bad arthritis from having their paws mutilated.

I wouldn't worry about her being an only cat - cats are crepuscular (they
are most active at dawn and dusk) because they evolved in desert conditions,
and, like most desert creatures, tend to spend the day sleeping.

I think you are!  Good luck, con-cat-ulations, and I look forward to reading
lots and lots of hooli-kitten stories (one-year-olds still have plenty of
"kitten" left in them!).

That's true with just about all cats, but we found an exception once.
Blacky the foster cat.
Blacky got adopted to a home with no other cats and an owner who
worked. He destroyed
the mini blinds the first week. He never did that at home. The people
who adopted him
even consulted a behaviorist, who said he had separation anxiety and
was just plain lonely.
They ended up bringing him back because they didn't want to try 2
cats.
I don't know how often that happens.

That is why I am not getting a kitten and am looking for an older cat that
maybe isn't looking to be with other cats and/or kids.  I was very lucky
(strange word, since maybe we shaped her that way, maybe not).  My old
Shadow never seemed to care about furry companionship or eventually, human,
during the day or even night! She was her "own" cat and while not
unfriendly wasn't friendly. She amused herself mostly with her windows.
And life was good with food, binkies, window with squirrels and birds! Hard
to describe.

It is tempting to get a kitten.  Thinking maybe, it will learn like she did,
that alone isn't bad.  But I really think they have their own personalities
and natures.  Shadow I think was just that way, she didn't need another cat
and managed fine without close people.  Found her in a pet shop cage with
someone who was obviously her brother.  But she didn't interact with him.
Was sitting outside the litter box he was dozing in and when the staff took
her out and put her in my arms, she popped right out and went to
investigate the fish food aisle!  I think that was just her way :)  Maybe
there is a kitty out there that would like to be spoiled rotten with the
lazy good life.  Watch TV, aquarium, birds, squirrels and bugs during the
day.  Get fed and petted at night and maybe chase a laser dot around when
they get too flabby LOL  Maybe for some kitties, like some people that
would be "the life"  :)

She sounds lovely and if not her, I am sure some other cat will look
at you and you'll say "Mine!" Then of course, you will have all the
chores of slavery again, feeding, litterbox cleaning, posting
photographs and funny stories to us here

You're definitely doing the right thing. :) If it makes you feel any
better, all mine spend most of the day snoozing and get up around Tea
time. The only one who is busy busy all day is Miss Lily Whiskers, and
she goes next door to pester the neighbour (who always has treats for
her ;o))

May Bast send you ther perfect owner. :)

Good luck, Sue. I'm really glad you're taking the plunge, and I know
you will be too.
I know you're going into this with a lot of thought, and I'm glad.
Really glad
you're looking at older cats. Maybe the shelter personnel can help you
find
the perfect one who'll be happy as an "only" cat. Since you do work
long
hours, there are many cats who would *not* be happy alone, indoors.
And, some are very happy to be the "only cat." Lots of them here on
this group;
Persia is one, and there are others.
Biskit would be *perfectly* happy to be an only cat, with an owner who
was away in the
daytime, and to never stick her little nose out the door ever. She
would be in kitty-heaven.
She loves her 8-10 a.m. sunbeam at the front door, though.
I hope some lucky cat with her kind of personality finds you!

Is Biskit available? :)

Actually I want Tak's Buster but it seems that he cares for other kitty
companions (even if they don't care for him :)

After being used to an independent kitty like Shadow, and not having
had cats for a while, I think you'd find Buster exhausting. :)  He is
a very *clingy* cat.  I'm sure you'd be a great kitty parent for him,
but I still think I can integrate my two.

Lots of good luck purrs on the way, I hope you and Sadie, or which ever cat
you adopt, have a very happy life together. I can't say I'm surprised you
were bitten by the declawed cat, it' s quite common when that's their only
line of defense, he/she was probably feeling very stressed. I'm glad
declawing is illegal in nearly every country in the world.

That declawd kitty - I didn't set out to adopt him.  I had gone to see a
kitten at the shelter (black tuxedo) who they brought from another foster
home.  She was gorgeous and unfriendly! Frankly, like my Shadow.  But for
some reason I got talked into visiting another foster home where there was
a beautiful adult black male.  He was a stray and they didn't know his
story. Declawed and already neutered when they found him. Breathtaking cat.
Declawing, I don't believe in it myself.  Shadow absolutely destroyed my
furniture for her all of nine years/lives.  She couldn't be trained out of
it since apparently she considered it her "thing".  Long story.  But I
figured, hey, he is already declawed so I won't hold that against him!  He
didn't like other cats so was kept in his very own room.  Nice room.  I
spent a long time with him at first.  He was very affectionate and liked
petting.  I met the lady's other cats then went back to see him, all ready
to adopt him.  He was in his basket and all I did was just stroke him, and
he sunk his teeth into my hand.  Very, very bad.  Hard to get him loose.
We poured peroxide over it right away but I still got a very bad infection.
Only other cat that ever bit me was Shadow when she was a teensy weensy
kitten with a URI.  We couldn't get her to eat except for some baby food
and very bloody raw roast beef shavings.  She mistook my thumb for a
shaving :) she didn't mean that at all LOL

I have been off cats since.  And actually afraid of thema bit.  Weird since
so much of my life was spent with them before.

I'd like to physically *hurt* the person who had Persia front-declawed.
Fortunately, she's a very sweet natured cat and it doesn't seem to bother
her.  But for goodness' sakes, she was apparently an outdoor (or at least
indoor-outdoor) cat left with no natural defenses!  She couldn't climb a
tree to get away from dogs (or other cats) let alone be able to fight if
necessary.  It just makes me sick.  She's strictly an indoor cat since she
came to live with me, except when she's in her Kitty Walk when we sit on the
patio in nice weather.

I'm constantly amazed by the way most cats handle a disabilty, like
blindness or the loss of a limb. But that doesn't excuse people maiming them
deliberately, especially when they know exactly what's involved.

Oh, you forgot, Adrian, they might scratch the furniture.
May American vets who offer this procedure at the same time as spaying have
their first knuckle removed on their hands.
I can hardly believe that this is done in a so called civilised country.  It
is outlawed almost everywhere else in the world, why? because it is cruel.

De-clawed cats are notorious biters.  Don't let the actions of one
kitty frighten you away from having a pet.  Each cat is an individual.
I'm sure you will find one that grabs your heart.

Lots of folks have only one cat.  The cats don't mind it at all.  I've
got one that would obviously prefer being the only kitty here, but he
has to share me with two other kitties.

I'm glad that you're finally taking the plunge! :)  A kitten would be
fine too, but I think that an adult cat is a good idea, especially for
an only-cat.  Both of mine would have been happy to have a home all to
themselves.

By the way, is this Sadie?  She's very cute.

Yes, that is her.  The only thing that worries me is the "feisty" part that
the lady who handles the email called her (she doesn't recall much else
about her so referred me to the shelter adoption folks)

Feisty can mean a lot of things so I will have to meet her and see for
myself.  And of course there are other cats there! And everywhere!
Somewhere is a kitty with my name on him/her, most likely.  Maybe a much
older cat. I can deal with a boring lap fungus lump.  Crazy hoolikitten
probably not :(  There was a big animal hoarding case near here recently, a
mansion full of kitties gone wild by owners with their own problems.  I can
check out the county shelter too. http://tinyurl.com/2de4nm

I will just wait for the right kitty.  Sounds funny, I am not really picky
myself but want a kitty that will be happy with what I have to offer.
Maybe it is not much but I think much better than even a nice shelter!

I was drawn to Sadie because she is young-ish, female and a blue tuxedo like
Shadow :)  She looks very much like Shadow when she was going through her
teen-age.  We thought Shadow would be a biggish sleek panther type.
Hahahaha her legs stopped growing.  She never grew into her tail at all(way
too long and kinked!). Shadow was smallish, at 7 years was 6 pounds and
maybe a little bit of fat even. You couldn't feel any ribs :)

oooh and please take no offense at my coveting Buster :)  He totally
suckered me in lately with that video of face-washing!

wrong with wanting a youngish healthy well behaved cat.

Definitely check out the kitties in those shelters. :)  Any of them
would be so happy to go home with you.

When I first met Betty, I wasn't sure if she was the right kitty for
me.  I finally had to take her home, because she was so sad and quiet
at the shelter, and she wouldn't open herself up to me there.

And for three years, Betty was the most loving and devoted friend any
hoomin could hope to have.

Persia is perfectly happy as an only kitty.  She doesn't like other cats.  I
had to install a baby gate across my sliding door screen to keep her from
crashing through it if another cat invaded our patio.  Her opinion is it's
HER patio! (She'd be right.)  She has plenty of toys to play with and she
manages to keep occupied just fine.  Good luck in your hunt for just the
right companion :)

And another baby finds a forever home!!!

And don't think twice about getting a cat instead of a kitten; they're still
our babies no matter the age. In the case of some like our Brandy, a cat can
keep being a kitten in attitude. Taking a grown cat to her new home, letting
her explore her new world, is just like watching a kitten get to know the
business of being a cat. Most of our rescues were adults when we got them,
and they're all my kittens; and the newness of HOME, knowing they're in the
place they'll be until they retire from the work of keeping us loved, has
kept the frisky in them.

Enjoy your new arrival as much as she'll enjoy you!

Blessed be,

Yes, the lady I have been emailing tells me it is air conditioned!  Shelter
opens for only 2 hours in afternoon for adoptions so I have been going over
the website and see two other possibilities so I will ask about them, too.
One is so sad looking I don't know why, something about how she holds her
head and I want to meet her in person.  She is just a year also but they
say she is shy and never gets into trouble and uses her scratching post
faithfully.  Sounds well-mannered even if she isn't a looker :)  The other
is a senior kitty that looks so sweet.  7 years isn't that old but they do
call her senior.

Oh, and there is a kitten. I know I can't take one but serious KFW

eek the cuteness is too much for me so I will NOT ask to see him.  I would
die to hold that.

There are so many shelters in the area.  This is I think the smallest so
good for starting out.

Ava and Nancy?  I think they're both very pretty.  You know, Betty

They have a lot of cats listed.  Is it a place that you can walk

Yes, that is them :) Ava has a bit of weird tilt to her head, must see her
in person to figure it out. Hear you about Betty. Shadow never used a
scratching post, either.  It was her only real vice.  Tearing the furniture
to shreds was her "thang". Period.  End of discussion where she was
concerned.  We tried many different kinds.  She did like sisal/straw mats a
bit to scratch but was more enthusiastic about eating it and her perversion
in that regard was a deal killer for sisal posts.  Her furniture scratching
was usually command performances for our benefit.  When we came home her
greeting was to run to the chair or couch, look right at us, and let 'er
rip!  She was so well trained in other ways we just gave up on having
decent furniture.  But in over seven years she never went out of her litter
box so I think she balanced out her scratching problem. We couldn't have
nice furniture but we could have very nice carpet :)

I did have a rescue for several months.  I made her a scratching post from a
board covered with old blue jean and she was quite dedicated to it!  So I
know it is possible for a cat to scratch appropriately.

I might just ask to hold him if he is there. tehe He is probably wiggly :)
I wouldn't dream of taking a kitten but it might be nice to try and hold
one for a few.

Wow, that is some fancy shelter! You must come from an upscale metro kind of
place! I don't think anything in our area would be like that, it is kind of
poorish and a little bit rural.  The slightly larger area one I went to
some years ago couldn't hold a candle to that! They had a group cat room
there, with a climbing tree near a tiny window.  And the usual cages.  That
was it.  Many kitties in foster homes and it was at one of those that I was
bit by the declawed cat :(

This shelter is on a tiny dinky side road by a river.  I am not expecting
much in the way of ambience, but hey, they got AC :) I will let you know,
hmmmm...maybe I should take my camera.

Too adorable.  Alas, he was gone when I went there yesterday so asked for
another to hold.  (Had to hold ONE at least, the adult cats would have none
of holding!)

I can understand.  Some of us are especially sensitive to heat.  Purrs that
Sadie is a match, or at least that it is much cooler next weekend.  We just
got over a hot spell.  Well, it was 90 today, but that's about 15 degrees
cooler than it was for about a week.

You are going to give a kitty a great onetruehome, Sue.
Wishing you lots of luck,
