The wrath of Lucy

My dad is still pretty sick. In fact, I don't think he will see the
new year. But his cat Lucy is keeping an eye out for him.

She has started sleeping next to him, and has made "surprise" attacks
on anyone who comes near my dad's bed (with a few exceptions). My
brother David and his wife (down from Indiana), for example, are
attacked. Me and my grand niece are not (although a healthy hiss lets
us know that Lucy is READY should we endanger her daddy).

She usually lets my stepmother go into the room, but if she does
anything that makes my dad hurt, Lucy lunges out and terrorizes my
stepmother's shoes (big grin).

I worry about how Lucy will do after my dad is gone. She's only about
three years old, so she's still got a lot of years left, but my dad is
her one true person. Her only person. She hates everyone else.

While I'm thinking of it, could I have some purrs that Lucy will be
able to deal with my dad's loss, and be able to deal gracefully with
those of us who will also miss him?

Hugs and Purrs,
Mark

Purrs for Lucy and the whole family. Even when it's inevitable it is still
very painful for the ones left behind.

Purrs for Lucy.  Have you tried offering her a treat when you approach?
Perhaps you could win her over if you do this.

I have an old friend whose niece overdosed and died in her sleep last
week.  When her companion went in late in the morning to awaken her the
woman's pet dog attacked him and ripped him up quite a bit.  I am told,
the dog had never done this before to anyone.   Makes you wonder???

I have no doubt that Kayla would defend me with her life if she thought she
needed to.  And she is not an agressive dog by any means.  Not even a decent
watchdog.

I'd guess a lot of dogs are like that.

Mark,
I am so very sorry that your father doesn't appear to be improving.
My gang is sending purrs for Nurse Lucy to work her magic over the
next weeks and months and he'll turn the corner to stay around and
keep Lucy company.  But if not and he has to make the journey we will
send purrs for all of you and hope that Lucy will be able to make the
adjustment from her one true person to someone who loved her one true
person.  It would be nice if she could make the leap to your
stepmother so that the two of them can share their loss together.  For
the moment, however, we will send our best healing purrs for your
father and support purrs for you and your family.

Purrs on the way. WooToo was afraid of everyone but my mom, which is
different from the way Lucy is but made for a similar problem. I
adopted her when my mom went and, after awhile, she has adapted well.
So, if the day comes, Lucy will probably adapt. Meanwhile, let us purr
for your dad.

When I had my house fire in 2002, my cat Annabel Lee died in the fire.  I
had to live in a no-pets-allowed residence hotel while the house was being
repaired (the insurance would pay for a hotel, but not for an apartment),
but adopted two adult cats, Katie and Cinders, once I was able to move
back into my house. Their former cat-slave was moving overseas. Katie made
friends with me fairly quickly, but Cinders was scared of me for several
months.  Then, one day, she suddenly decided to stop being scared of me,
and has been a love-bug ever since.

Katie died of cancer less than a year after I adopted her, but Cinders is
still in good health, and still likes lots of attention.  She is very fond
of grooming me with her sandpaper tongue, and I suspect that she must have
been in the habit of grooming Katie's fur, although I never actually saw
her doing it.
